selling BWP, looking for new ball recommendations..
« on: December 01, 2007, 06:02:02 AM »
Returned to bowling after a 7 year absence, old ball was cracked, so bought the BWP.  I don't really have a pro shop near by, but the one I went to in Wichita, Ks, didnt have a pro per say, but a person running the shop.  Anyway, I told him what I was looking for, and I bought the Black Widow Pearl.  I am a full roller, and probably throw the ball too hard, but regardless, this BWP will not work for me!
If I slow the ball speed way down, move outside around the 3-5 boards, I sometimes can get the ball to finish strong.  But, I do not like playing that far outside and I do not like to throw the ball that slow.  So rather than fighting it for the rest of the season, I have found a person that wants to buy it.

So, I am open to all recommendations you guys will make, and I am not brand specific.  I am a right hander, and like to play somewhere between the first and second arrow.  The BWP is not very forgiving for me, and I have to be very exact, and throwing the ball slow for effect, is not my style.

thanks,
coadman

Try a solid ball, somthing with surface/dull. Either a Black Widow solid or an Infinite One if you can find one or the Anger, something along those lines should do the trick.

I always used to throw a 16# ball, but my elbow started hurting me about the time I quit years ago.  So, this time, I thought I would go to a 15# ball just in case the added weight was causing the elbow problem.  So far this year, elbow has not hurt, so who knows.

Thanks for the response.  I currantly am only bowling in one league, I would say medium oil, never light oil or dry, second session is the league I bowl.  I like to throw the ball hard, as I always felt I was more accurate with added ball speed as opposed to just trying to lay the ball out there and let it roll, so I would guess med-fast, but I do not really crank the ball(I dont know if that is possible being a full roller?) The lanes are wood.

Raw Hammer Doom is awesome for medium lanes. Cheap too.

Do you have a pic? It is possible that they laid it our incorrectly for a full roller.

I dont have a picture, but I remember the person stating that there were not many options, for drilling a full roller.  I know he took plenty of time measuring and rechecking before he did the drill.

SInce you really have no idea of some of the factors invovled,
AND
the BWP is a good ball for medium oil, in general, that you say you are facing,
I'd guess you have FAR TOO MUCH ball speed.

I'd go with a strong solid, like the Anger, if you stayed with Hammer.

Better yet, before buying a new EXPENSIVE ball (the Anger is medium priced), either try someone else's ball or buy a used one to see how it reacts. Used ones, if for good ball with a single drill, can be fairly cheap $15 - 40, plus the cost of pluggin it and having the pro shop redrill it for you, VS the cost of a new one $140 - $220.

coadman,

It's hard to tell exactly what to recommend to fix your problem.  Like the other posters said, there are many factors involved.  It's good that we know that you are a full roller.  But I would need to see the layout that the driller put on the ball, the track, and the positive access point.  I can tell you since I own a Black Widow Pearl that this a very strong pearl ball that when drilled right, can give you a very strong reaction off the break point.

Maybe someone on this message board can help you find a qualified pro shop that can look at your ball and analyze the way you are throwing your ball.  If we know where you live, someone here is bound to recommend a proshop that can help.

i agree with dpunky.  pending on the layout of the ball.  i throw the same the same line as you and i use a black widow pearl (pin slightly below and beside ring finger) and a No Mercy (with #1 drilling).  to me this balls makes a strong move to pocket.  With your speed, if you are going with pearl balls, you should go with aggressive drilling with short pins.  If you are going with balls that are sheen or dull, go with a layout that will give you about 50% length, 50% backend and 80% hook like a "label" drilling or if you prefer,  40% length, 70%backend and 100% hook "stacked" leverage drilling.

I would go with a SuperNova or a SuperNova XP. These balls roll very even, yet are strong on the backend. The SuperNova has a light load solid coverstock, which works on all medium to heavier oiled conditions. The XP is a pearl which goes longer with the same smooth hard arc to the pocket.

Seeing as thogh you like to throw the ball harder, I'd go with the SuperNova. =:^D

I bought a couple of used balls from jap8746 .  The price was right for used balls, one is a Brunswick Mammoth and the other a Rotogrip Epic Odyssey.  I sent him an old ball of mine and he said he would drill it off of the specs on that ball.  Any suggestions, feel free to pass it on!.
thanks,
Jim

coadman,

I too am a full roller.  Like the others have said, the Black widow pearl is a strong pearl ball.  I have one drilled up with the full roller and it comes back for me.  My ball speed is around 17 mph or so.  It appears you don't use as many revs, or you may be throwing it too hard.  I would recommend the Anger as well.  I have all four of hammer's new releases and I love this ball.
