Hammer ball to use on short patterns....
« on: May 29, 2011, 11:37:31 AM »
Well my last 3 attempts on Cheetah and Stockholm, I reallized I suck on the short patterns, or the balls I have aren't matching up well..

A wihile back I went to the Brunswick balls, due to my ball driller is a staffer, so figured easier to find the gap balls.

I gave my dad my Midnight Vibe, my other buddy my Cherry Vibe before that.    I had never bowling on the short sport shots with those,  I had both pin high over ring, due to a hold relasese that made me rev dominate,   I've snce gone more behind the ball, catching it at the bottom, bringing my track up to med-high.  Those ball,s both had fairly strong backends on the dry lanes.. but were still fairly predictable.  I know my dad has bowled 5 750's since he got my ball 4 months ago..  (kick myself everyday, I thought the damage would be a substitute, but it's over under for me...  pin over bridge...can't remmebert the exact abgles.

So Hammer guys what is the choice for the shorts..   Got another couple of tournaments comeing up I need to prepare for.

Short Pattern Ball choices. When playing WTBA patterns I prefer to use the cherry vibe or backlash's. Depending on many factors of the bowler here is a bit of help.

1. The longer a pattern first move is to play more inside.
2. The shorter the pattern first move is to play more outside...

Shorter patterns can cause bowlers havoc because of change of direction. There are going to be times when you want to stay up the back as to get more predictable motion. The majority of shorter patterns I actually polish all balls and then lightly hit the entire ball surface with 4000 abralon wet by hand. The idea is that you lightyly break the shine to get the ball beginning to loose energy while the pearl cover tries to get you down lane with minimal shine.

Learn not to think of trying to hook the ball after the end of the pattern.  This gets you in trouble. What it means is don''t try to store all the energy until (lets say Sydney 33ft) until you get out of the end of the pattern.

Balls:

Vibe, Backlash, Brawl or Infection (depending on drill and lane surface)

I agree with Dyno..to a point. On short patterns, you want the ball to lose energy quicker to take away from the "jump" at the back part of the pattern. I don't like using pearls on these patterns....sanded or not.

To me, the key to controlling and succeeding on a short pattern is having pin distances closer to your PAP. Anywhere from 1 1/2-3". This will create more flair and thus, loss of energy.

Depending on the volume of oil, the ball choice will vary. I bowled on a heavier volume, short, sport pattern this past season and used a 70x3x60 Infection. On a lighter volume, a Brawl would be a good choice....still keeping the pin closer.

Surface is also a good idea. Again, depending on volume, you could use anything from 1000-4000 Abralon. If a pearl cover is your only choice, then make sure you take that shine off it.

I hope this helped.

All ideas above are good. The key to all of it is this. What does the bowler to do the ball? Once you have all this information it is much easier to get the right equipment in hand. I prefer pearls (not always highly shined) on most patterns for my style. There have been a few times when a solid versoin (BLUE VIBE) is easier to dominate the pattern.  I will move up the line from time to time. However, once again it gets back to the bowler. On WTBA 43 ft Tokyo and Kegels Dead Man's Curve..Give me a Brawl with a Neg Pin and it plays like a house shot... Thats for my style.
