Dulling a Doom
« on: January 31, 2007, 06:40:27 AM »
Quick background:  I bowl in an OLD wooden (4 lane) house where oiling is done with a mop...gutter to gutter.  Rarely are the backends cleaned well.  Lately it seems they have been putting down a heavier amount of oil.

Question:  I throw a Doom and I'm looking to get a little more reaction out of it...maybe an earlier roll.  The proshop guy told me when he drilled it to hit it with a green scotch brite pad if I wanted more out of it.  Am I on the righ track with this?  Should sanding be done up and down or in a circular motion?  How much pressure should be applied?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

The Green pad will work great.  It will bring the cover down to 600 grit.  This will allow the DOOM to handle more oil.  The DOOMS cover when dulled gives a fantastic reaction.

AS far as I know... the right way to do the procedure is to move the pad in circular movement /in circles of approx. 6" over the whole ball...

That way od applying should avoid a special direction/orientation which is maybe not wanted.

I used to do this to dull my balls and workes great.

Cool.  I'm going to give this a shot tonight before league.  How much pressure should I apply as I'm doing it?  Light, firm, strong?

I bowl on Brunswick Pro-Anvil lanes(hard as glass). The backends are usually tight with carrydown. I was getting a lot of over-- under with my dooms. I sanded my Doom down with 2000 abralon pad. I have shot 300 and 2 800 sets since and I am now averaging 235 since the move. The ball reads the midlane a lot sooner now and rolls hard on the back.

The Doom is a very under rated ball.  It is Hammertime in my home town.

A lot of bowlers don't have a clue how versatile this ball is.  When the DOOM is dulled it handles a decent amount of oil.  It also handles the mid lane a lot better when dulled.  The DOOM even when dulled still hits like a freight train!

I will also vouch for the DOom, after dulling it I got a very smooth and controllable reaction that wasn't too early and gave me a great look on Medium+ and Mediums with carry down, I had used a Green pad on the ball also.
