I haven't bowled for many years now, but my son wants to start and wants me to bowl with him. Back when I used to bowl a lot I had a ball I really liked. It was a dull finish black Hammer ball. I don't remember which model, but it was just black with the hammer name and logo in orange no other markings I remember. It was about 30 years ago when I bought the ball. Any idea what this ball was or what the equivalent ball would be today?
Thanks,
Rick

Thanks, That picture looks just like it, and the comments fit. Too bad it's been discontinued. Mine was stolen out of the trunk of my car years ago along with a Black Diamond I had and my pool que. Just now thinking of replacing it. I'll take a look at the Storm Natural.
Thanks again,
Rick

The big thing about having a ball like that and wanting something comparable is, you have to realize the lane oil is MUCH thicker now than it was when you were using that ball and a lot more oil is also applied to the lane in general.

OK, so considering the heavier oil of today, what would be a good replacement for the Hammer I used to have?

well if you wanna hammer look into the vibe line the blue is great. but i dont know how you bowl

I have a black urethane Hammer and the ball works great for most league nights.I find it rare that they put oil out anymore.

The harder I try the harder they fall

i have 3 balls that see lg play right now...a rayzr, link, and a highly polished maniac drilled very weak
no oil here im considering buying a natural

I guess I need to talk find out how/if the lanes I bowl on are oiled? And maybe talk to the pro shop guys, cause I'm not sure waht you mean by "how I bowl".
Thanks,

Rick,
Just wanted to pop in and let you know, I'm an "old timer" and remember the "old days" well. I also remember the ball. I still have the one I shot my first 300 game with.
The world of bowling has changed drastically since you last competed. The balls are much stronger, oils are much heavier and slicker, and even amatuer bowlers are MUCH more knowledgable than in the past.
The ball you are referring to is a regular urethane model which, by todays standards, would be classified as little more than a spare ball by most bowlers.
And about "how you bowl"? Let me first ask, did you throw a hook ball or a straight ball? If you threw a straight ball, and wish to continue to do so, most entry level reactive resin would suffice. Ebonite bought out the HAMMER name recently, but are still producing balls under the HAMMER name, if you wish to again own that brand. If so, the RAZYR is a good entry level ball, with the VIBE series just above it with surprisingly good performance, especially if you intend to learn a HOOK ball delivery.
If you already are throwing a HOOK delivery, then the VIBES are very good starting points with the RAW series just above them. The RAW series is a mid-level series with performance above their price point.
Do a little research on your own before you buy, and find a good, REPUTABLE shop who will work with you to actually determine your skill level and the best piece of equipment for YOU.

OK, I used to throw a pretty strong hook with the hammer (even with the Black Diamond), but now getting back into it and using a house ball, I'm throwing pretty straight. I would like to get my hook back but nothing I try with the house ball seems to work. I have some lessons scheduled for my son next week and I'll try and get some pointers from the pro at the same time.
Thanks,
Rick
