What is so special about Super Carbide Bomb?
« on: December 22, 2004, 06:05:50 PM »
Title says it.

I want some different peole's opinions about this.

I know that it is widely ragarded as the best Heavy Oil ball out there (as well as the AMF Angle Evo TOUR)... but what is it about the SCB that people love so much? Is it just a favorite of Lane #1 fans only and it's THEIR heavy oil ball... or is this just the ball that people starve for and crave when they need an OIL bal?

Is this a length and hard arc ball... or an early roll and controlled arc ball?

How strong is the backend on this ball? Is there much recovery?

What would be the best drilling for this ball? Some say, don't use a 3 3/8 x 3 3/8" or 4x4 on these balls because they may lose some backend reaction... so what do you do? Put the PIN above the ring and stack the CG below (which would be about 1" right of grip center)? Or a PIN beside ring and CG dead on grip center?

Just want to hear from all of you about why you like it so much?

Thanks!

I throw an SCB when I have an opportunity. The ball doesn't do anything unique - it just hooks when nothing else will move.

Several months ago, I purchased an SCB, a Black Cherry Bomb, and an Ultimate inferno.

The Black Cherry bomb hooked about 8 boards.
The Ultimate about 11.
The SCB 16.
This is with my low rev rate, lower speed, stroker type game.

Now that I've increased speed and rev rate, this ball is one of the few I can even think about throwing on heavy oil. Period. Everything else squirts through the breakpoint.

Handles carrydown really well, as well.

Think surface as well. You can feel the difference.

I wish I could tell you it's my absolute favorite ball, but frankly, I seldom see enough oil for it. But I'm grateful when I can throw it - because it outperforms everything else I've ever tried on heavy oil.

Ric,

please see my review of the ball posted yesterday...

I had a Ultimate Inferno with a roll heavy drilling. It was nothing compared to the SCB.

I have not personally thrown the SCB, but my best friend rolls with one regularly, and he raves about it. I have seen it in action, and it is just as Mumzie says,..."will move when nothing else can". The ball, from my observations, is extremely predictable, and has devastating carry. My partner even uses it when there is no heavy oil available!! Of course, he has good speed and is a cranker. This ball goes moderately long and then just rolls up with a very hard arc. I've seen him use it on heavy oil, medium oil, and he has actually tried it on lite oil as well...( with ugly results) I might add.

He has his ball laid out for early roll. Pin high, about half an inch higher than the ring finger, and cg kicked about .75 of an inch. This set up is shifted to the right of the ring by about an inch, also. I have seen this ball devastate the pocket, and I have seen him win massive money pot games, with this ball continually riding high on the head-pin with strike after strike! The ball just plain carries well. It'll give you constant "peek-a-boo" 7-10 leaves, but it somehow always kicks them out. (Not on lite oil, though)
Definitely a "must have" piece to save you when you get in trouble. I know I want one!

Ric,
As my username shows; I am a buzzsaw faithful, but I will attempt to give you a fair estimate of this balls capabilities.  When I first started bowling about 4-5 years ago, I did not have many revolutions and I couldn't get many things to move for me due to my high ball speed.  In the course of a few months, I purchased a Trauma ER, original Assault, Colossus Supreme, and carbide bomb, none of them gave me the reaction that I needed.  Then I purchased the Super Carbide Bomb.  This ball outhooked all of the others and any ball that I know of to this date.  It still has the highest hook rating of any ball by Bowling This Month, if you believe their numbers.  It is the most aggressive ball made for the following reasons:

1.  Coverstock>>>> I believe the number, depending on who you ask, is 80 - 90%.  The coverstock is the number one factor in searching for a heavy oil ball.  The SCB's coverstock is a high load particle, which makes it one of(if not the) most aggressive coverstocks on the market.

2.  Core>>>>>>>>>> The bomb core with the dual stacked nuggets give more flare than any other core I have seen.  I have never had a ball flare more than 3-4 inches in the oil.  The SCB gives me 7-8 inches.  The first thing that I noticed was that the flare rings covered about 80% of the ball.  This huge amout of flare means that the ball is continuously changing the track location as it is moving through the oil, therefore; cutting through oil as it moves down the lane.

If you have any other questions that I have not addressed please feel free to PM me and I will attempt to answer anything that I can.
