Title: 2x6 Tsunami???
Post by: Doug Sterner on December 28, 2007, 02:13:54 PM
I am looking at a ball to fit into my arsenal and replace my Hole Pounder Pearl. I love the drilling on the ball and the reaction it gives me. If I drilled a polished Tsunami with the pin 2" off the PAP and mass bias under the thumb (roughly 6" from PAP) would it fit???

I am really struggling with fried backends lately and I am hoping to find a Lane 1 ball to fit. I just happen to have a used Tsunami sitting here and was thinking about it....

Hey Doug,

I had two different Tsunamis, and tried three different drills. I just never found anything I liked with that ball. I know some guys swear by the Tsunami, but I did nothing other than swear AT it.

I do have a Uranium HRG drilled like you suggest, and it is one of my favorite balls.

I'm not sure what you mean by "fried backends". Does that mean squeaky clean and they are flying, or does it mean they are garbage (carrydown?).

Check out my H2O video:

Pin to PAP: 2 3/4"
MB to PAP: 6"

Dry HPL's with flying backends and outsides.
3rd shift shot.

semi pin axis Doug, mine is a 1.375 pin ball, i placed the  pin 1.375 above pap, on the val, cg 1/2" left of val, placing mb next to my thumb, ultra smooth with a very controled move on the back, on fresh house shot i can take this ball and throw hard with plenty of hand up ten, as the lane fries out i can move left and stay with it, the nice thing is that this ball doenst lose anything on the hit even in deeper, where as most weakly drilled balls for me tend to not have the pop while creating angle, the tsunami does.

Well guys the lane start out looking like they are flooded (started with my pin under ring SuperNova) but within 6 frames they break down to the point I had to grab my pin over ring Evolution. Then by the middle of game 2 it's time to grab the XXXL.

I just don't get it....yes the lanes are 50 year old wood that were cut 2 summers ago but don't you think with a $20,000 lane machine they could come up with something better?

I had a 2x4 Emerald Pearl that I really regret selling...was the last ball I really loved on the house shot.

I thought that perhaps a 2x6 Tsunami would let the ball get downlane (mild coverstock) but still let it read midlane (solid resin coverstock) and let it sit down on the backend (drill pattern).

Whaddaya think????

Interesting...very interesting.

Sorry Megaman....didn't get to look at it until just now.

I just remembered I can get a pearl H2O still....NIB.

Maybe that would be a better use of my finances than a Neptune, Tropical, Ogre SS, Bash or Cherry Vibe...

Any thoughts?

Definitely not the Cherry Vibe if you're trying to tame down the back end.  That ball responds hard to friction.

The (solid) Tsunami might be a good choice still.  I love mine when the back ends are hooking hard.  I went the opposite way, pin over middle finger (5.5 " to PAP for me), CG in grip center, MB just right of the thumb.  It's very smooth, but even it's sometimes too much when they're really flying.

Definitely do it, most underrated ball in as many years as I can remember.
Ball came out in may or june, then the tsunami came out soon after, and everyone went ga-ga over it, and forgot about the pearl.

If you want length and control, it should be the ball to do the job.
It does for me, and im not a sawhead.

Best of luck, if you need anything else, let me know.

Doug, if you've got any hand, the H2O can be a little touchy when it hits the dry. Yes, it is underrated. However, the amount of hook is also underrated. I was suprised how the H20 took off on me when I hit it.

For the conditions you describe, I believe the low flaring HRG will provide more control.

Nova...do you think a 2" pin to PAP drilling and a little surface work will help smooth out the transition? That's why I was considering the Tsunami as it would be smoother off the oil.

Doug,

As I said, I have two HRGs.

Ball one:
Pin under ring (4.5 X 3), CG out, weight hole 2" down on VAL.
Surface scuffed with scotchbrite (light pressure just enough to knock the shine off). This ball reads the lane very well and is playable under a wide variety of conditions.

Ball two:
Modified label drill (2x6), pin is right of ring, slightly up, and CG is just above the thumb. No weight hole...ending weights are 1/2oz pos side, and 1/4oz thumb. Surface is OOB finish. This ball goes longer than ball one and turns a little harder off the dry. Still, the core dynamics of the HRG allow for a great deal of control.

I rarely get into trouble with these two balls. I am always able to hit the pocket...it just comes down to carry as to which one of the pair I decide to throw.

You may be able to get an H2O or Tsunami to do the same job with that drill and some surface. I just prefer the low flare core characteristics of the HRG.

Let me know what you decide and how it turns out for you.
Good luck and Happy New Year!

I've been using a 2x5 HRG with no weight hole and 1500 grit surface with good success on a typical medium house block.  I really like the early rev characteristics that you get with the pin closer to PAP.  For me, it's smooth off the dry, but still plenty powerful on the back end.

The HRG is still a high(er) RG pearlized ball.  I haven't seen any in action, but that is usually a recipe for flip.  Drill is still secondary to cover and maybe core dynamics.  FWIW, the Tsunami has a slightly lower differential than the HRG.

Well guys here's what I can say....

Strider....the only way the HRG will flip is if you pick it up and toss it into the air....well unless you have big hand and are on an extreme wet/dry block.

Ish...thanks for the input...I am leaning in this direction.

Nova...I get what you are saying with the HRG and I really wish I had not ever sold mine. I was trying to work somehting out with a ball I already had in the shop. Money's a little tight right now and didn't want to order an HRG from Lane 1.

Here's pics of what the Tsunami will look like laid out for the drilling I want. As it sits there will be 2-1/2 oz of sideweight so a fairly substantial weight hole will be needed.

Sweet!
I will not be the only guy willing to put a monster crater in a ball to get what I want out of it. I had to make a crater in a Solid Uranium (for a CG Axis drill), and guys laughed at me...right up until they see the ball work on a pattern where they have nothing to throw.

doug, very close to my semi pin drilling ball, ask Chuck about my tsu, he can attest to the control the ball has, he and i threw together in jersey a year ago and from what i remember he was pretty impressed

I am just closer to the val with mine. pin on val 1.375 from pap, cg 1/2" left of val with a huge crater in that location, mb happens to be roughly 5.5 from pap, ball gets great length (better with a dose of track black magic) on fresh even with my heavy hand it is money up ten, on a broken down shot it loses nothing in deep

Doug,

I had my Tsunami drilled similar to Triggs and it worked very well in the drier stuff. I had mine in box finish and it was just one continuous arc. It did get finicky for me if I didn't get the release right and would not hook and leave flat tens. But it should work for what you are looking for. The other option would be a B/G Centaur for what you want. I have been playing around with mine and it just rolls all the way to the pins. I am going to polish it up a bit and see what it does there. I have to agree with charlset on this ball. Great for dry lanes.

Happy New Year Doug and everyone.

Well I did it....hit the ball with a 1000 grit Abralon pad and added 2 coats of Track's Magic Shine. I then drilled the ball out just as I had it in the pics.

With the layout the ball had 1/8 finger, 1/4 top/bottom and 2-1/2 sideweight.

I put the balance hole (15/16 x 3") on my PAP and got the sideweight down to 3/4 oz. Finger weight is 1/4 oz and there is 1/8 bottom weight.

I then took the ball out to the lanes and WOW......it's what I wanted. The ball is super controllable, won't snap if I bend it in half and I don't have to throw it 500 MPH to get it down the lane. The lane condition was a fried out 2 day old light oil shot.

In short I am liking life at this point....cannoit wait to try it on the regular house shot.

Thanks again to everyone for the suggestions.....
