My thoughts on the Uranium!
« on: February 29, 2004, 06:59:03 AM »
I know people have posted their reviews already, but I'm having a tougher time lining up with mine to do so, instead I'll jot down my thoughts.

Some people refer to this ball as Lane 1's blue Inferno, but in my hands it's not.  The Uranium compared to the Inferno gets a million miles more length and turns 37 times harder in the backs.

Info about me is in the profile for those who don't know me, the Uranium I received from Doug Sterner came in at 16 pounds with a 2-3" pin out distance, having top weight at 3.5 ounces.  This ball is drilled 4x4 according to Lane 1's drill sheet, which goes against my Buzzsaw layouts but I wanted to be different.

For starters I'm not going to go over how it reacts on the lanes so much as what line I play, because I'm having a slightly difficult time trying to find a way to control this monster.

For the first three games I bowled with this ball on synthetics, a 40 foot flat pattern no buff in the backs, sometimes walled 10-10 sometimes not.  The line I tried to play here was up 10, which wasn't too bad but since it's pearl the oil hindered it from turning to the pocket well enough to carry.  Over all the ball rolled well to the pocket, with a decent amount of speed it was smooth and even to the pins, sliding and arcing.  If I slowed down the ball speed at all it was soooo skid snappy it wasn't even funny.  The U-Saw would skid 57.7 feet down the lane and actually cover 15 boards in the last 3 feet.

Oh my wooden leagues, this ball definitely needs head oil to be useful.  I couldn't find a line Friday night because I was babying the ball all night long, afraid it wouldn't make it back to the pocket if thrown wide.  I was without a doubt wrong as hell with this, the ball will make it back and then some, even cutting through the OB that forms outside 10.

After starting a terrible first game of over under tonight, I finally got lined up on those same wooden lanes in a spot that allowed me to throw the ball faster, rev it higher, but keep the lined tighter to avoid unpredictable movements on the back.  The line was 15-10, I could keep it tight and straight that way, or belly it out 15-5 and the ball would either hold or rip back.  I didn't tug any shots at all so I don't know about breaking hard for brooklyns.

Over all, the Uranium is very speed and release sensitive for me.  Too fast and it's skates, too slow and it will come back to you on the lanes.  If I come up the back it rolls beautifully, if I hit it or come around the side it will snap like crazy on the back.  I also see that as great versatility because you can change to handle all types of medium conditions, maybe even some heavy ones too.  I also think a little carrydown to help calm the backend would be good too.  This baby hits like a Uranium loaded missle, just like they named it.  It sends pins all over to hell and back just like the Super Carbide (ash black) does.  It's carry is decent but on the wrong condition it will leave it's fair share of 4s, 7s, 8s, 9s, and/or 10s.

Any tips or questions IM me...

A P K, I think it is probably a question of whether the ball and its drilling match up with the bowler. I had the same problems with the Inferno that you are having with the Uranium. The Inferno was drilled different than my Uranium. Had it been drilled like my Uranium, maybe it would have worked and then again, maybe not.

All I can tell you is that the Uranium is now the first ball out of my bag. I bowl mostly on light to medium oil, (once in a while maybe a wee bit heavier than medium, but seldom) sometimes with carry down and sometimes not.
The first time I used it, the ball looked like it had hit a post and was making 90 degree turns. Of coarse thats an exaguration, but it seemed it was turning that hard.....lol I thought the ball wasn't even going to hook at all and all of a sudden it would make this excessive sharp turn, head for the pocket and simply blow the pins out.

I talked to Doug Sterner and he told me to stay more behind the ball instead of coming off the side as I was doing. I did this and that seemed to do the trick. It's still a very hard angular break (which I love), but that took the snap-flip out of it. Who knows, maybe I will run into a snap-flip condition one day, but so far it works very well as long as I stay behind the ball somewhat and don't over turn it.

So far I love it, but I need to use it for a few weeks to see if it will remain my #1 ball.

A_P_K,

Does this ball have an axis hole........and if not.......would a hole on pap help at all...tame a little more, promote a quicker roll.....??

After reading all of the reviews that are being posted on the U-saw it almost seems like I have a different ball.  I'm not hijacking A_P_K's thread, but being he's my bud I figured I could put in my 2 cents.
My U-saw is 15lbs with less than 4 oz top and has a 3" pin.  I drilled it 4 1/4 x 3 1/4 using a 55 degree layout.  The pin is under the ring finger.  I do not see skid/snap at all with this ball.  I have used it mainly on my Monday night late shift when I'm playing close to 5th arrow.  This ball is all about mid lane roll and a heavy controlled arc on the back.  This is the ball I have been looking for for playing that deep shot because for me, that put me farther left than my revs would allow me to carry the 10 pin consistently.  I have to say (now I know I shouldn't be saying this) but in the last 2 weeks (6 games) I may have left 1 10 pin.  This ball carries fantastic from that deep (for me)
angle.  Now I tried to play more up the boards with it but it was just too dry and the ball just went straight for the nose.
On another night that I bowl first shift, they put out a fresh shot, 8 to 8 with clean backends.  I don't know the volume of oil that they put out but I would say it's medium at most.  The U-saw skidded way too long and never recovered.  My Golden Nugget outhooked and outperformed this ball on this fresh condition hands down.  Even if I tried to get it out to the drier boards it still didn't have enough to make it back.  So for me, this ball fits perfectly in my arsenal for the late night, deeper line which seems to carry the 10 pin much better than any other ball I have used in recent memory.
So I'm seeing a lighter to medium/light condition ball that can be played very well from a deeper angle.  Also, I am on older wood lanes, not synthetics.  That probably makes a huge difference also.  Take care....JS

Brick,

I can tell you that the layout doesn't match up with my style at all, but you know what, that's tough, I want to fight the ball and make it work for me.  I knew ahead of time it was going to be a tough road ahead with a drill pattern I don't use on Buzzsaws.

Yeah Doug is right, stay behind the Uranium or it will skid 1000 feet and snap 50 boards to the pins.  It may be an exaggeration, but it's pretty damn close to the truth, this ball will make a very angular move to the pocket.

After taking four games to find the line that works better for me with this ball, I can see it working on a mess load of conditions.  I can play with it on all ranges from dirt to upper mediums as long as I can control the backend.  I found it to be very speed sensitive but then again that can be a plus as well.  Yes it hits mega hard, harder than the Inferno and just as hard as the Ash Black Super Carbide does.

What I tried to do here was give a brief over view of how my progression with the Uranium went.  I wasn't giving it props or dogging it either.  However the very first game I found the line with it I shot 279 with the 9 count a 4 pin.  The next game was in the 220s+ but could have been higher due to lack of operator spare completions.

What I see now from those two games is, a ball I can throw harder and straighter, or slower and bend it more.  For me throwing it harder some with less rotation or tilt works better.  It still smashes the rack and carries all ten even when it nicks the head pin.

So far I like the two final game results, and will build off of them.

Jeffrevs,

Yes it has an axis hole already, it's not helping one bit...lol

John,

For me it doesn't like long oil all too well, if it has a decent amount of dry somewhere on the lanes it will hook off the charts.  Your drill pattern would have been similar to mine if I went with the 4x3 at 45 degrees and I don't need another hard arcing mid lane rolling ball, I have that in the Bruiser already.  Also if I get this ball out too soon, it will come back with a vengance like I've never seen before.

APK I have had a couple problems like you experienced but mainly the part when you said about ball speed.

Same goes for me if i tend to toss the ball a bit fast it skates for me, and if i slow it a tad slow, boy does it take off, but knowing this i try to constantly repeat my speed and have had no problem since.

Updates on my course with the Uranium:

Works well on synthetics walled because the big backend will not hesitate to recover from a very deep angle.  Carry is decent too...looks good on Thursdays...

On wood, I finally got the backend under control, but the carry is piss poor, worse than any Buzzsaw I've ever thrown.  Usually for me half pocket hits carry the ten, and are my specialty, but with the Uranium I am guaranteed a 10 pin every time.  This damn ball hits so freakin hard I leave too many 8s and 9s too, maybe a few 4s that won't trip because of the drive too.

I will give it three more games in this state then the cover is coming down and I will polish it back up some.

Mt Uranium is the first Saw that I've experimented with a more aggressive drilling.  I settled on a 5x4 with a small weight hole 1/2" past the PAP producing about 1/2 oz. positive finger and side imbalances.  I have yet to see a reaction that could be described as "squirrely" or unpredictable.  If I send her to the nether regions outside the eight board(8-10 units), it has a smooth transition to the backends with just enough of a move to gather steam.  At the end of the oil application, the move to the pocket is pronounced and powerful, with a fair amount of accuracy placed on speed.  Slow up, 3-6-10 or worse.  Speed up, and the worst I'm looking for is a light, swishing 7 pin.  I guess a coverstock tweak might help you to obtain the desired results from your Uranium, but I have yet to explore that with Lane #1's newest ball.  Hope your scores make the turn, soon!

Scoring isn't the problem, it's the carry that is.  It took me a little bit to figure out how to contain such a skid snappy ball but now it's almost like you have to be dead flush in order to carry well with this layout.

Don't get me wrong, I really lilke this ball a ton now I got it under control, but I want to maximize it's potential to use it all the time.

A_P_K, I'm not having any problems with mine yet, but if you did take the cover down and polish yours, could you let me know what you did and the results in case the time came I needed to adjust mine in the future? This ball has eliminated my 10 Pin problems as I hardley ever have over 2, if that many in a 3 game set. However, like you, I leave a few (not a lot) of 8 or 9 pins. However they are a lot easier to spare on than the 10 pin....lol I can hardley find anything I don't like about this ball so far. The only negative I have found is if I come into the pocket too light, sort of behind the head pin (but still hit it) this ball can leave some of the ugliest splits. Over all, I love it and it is the first ball out of my bag, always.

Brick,

Anything for a fellow Saw Head...

Jimmy T,

To clarify...carry in my eyes is when you put the ball in the pocket 33 out of 36 times and shoot 645...

Not every pocket shot will carry but I've had better success with other balls namely the Burgundy Gryphon.  For example 33 out of 36 balls in the pocket turned out to a 765...

There's my nuance for you...
