Since no one has posted a review of the retro ths I thought I would see if anyone has thrown it, and what kind of reaction its getting. How much flare, movement, etc...
-
This ball is a total junk for my game. Looks like
my game can no longer match up with the new Lane
#1 releases. Maybe the time has come for me to say
sayonara to Lane #1.

Over a gimmick ball? OK...

I can't match up with the newer Lane #1 equipment
starting from the Super Nova XP. However, I still
love some of the old Lane #1s with Brunswick
coverstocks.

So far I feel the same exact way, not going to waste 200 dollars on a gimmick ball. I notice alot of the pro shops guys have already dumped them off, the covers they are using seem to be pretty weak versus Brunswick made coverstocks.

I loved all of my Brunswick made, Brunswick cover Lane 1's and love the Lane 1 cores and the way they roll as they seem a really good match-up for me, but because of my fear of the Lane 1's and the complaints about some of them since Brunswick quit making them, I have not bought anymore Lane 1 balls. I want to buy more because as said, I love them, but I am scared to.

The mismatch begins with the Super Nova XP.
I have the solid G-Force and the Super Nova solid,
still like both of them. Like you, Brick, I
will not buy future Lane #1 releases, fearing it
will only end up a wasting my hard earned cash.

Here's a video if you want to see how the ball rolls. http://www.videoballreviews.com/lane1.html
Bowlingmsy, this ball is not a hook monster or a big backend monster. The XP wasn't advertised to be a big hook or backend monster either. Maybe that's what you need..?
If you like the SuperNova, you should love the BuzzBOMB. If you're looking for pure power on the backend, the pearl version will knock your socks off. =:^D
-
Ah, well that's a bummer..
I had the opposite results with the XP/BuzzBomb.
I used to just buy the latest, most aggressive balls from L1 until this summer. I picked up the XXXL, XP and BuzzBomb to have an actual arsenal for dry to soaked and all three balls have done exactly what I bought them for.
I have a spinner at home though, so making surface adjustments when I want is a huge plus.

I just recently tried a few Lane 1 balls to see what I would think coming from Hammer-LM/L devotee. So far I couldn't be moree impressed with the performance I am getting from them. Got Buzzbomb-currently favorite ball I have rolled in my day. polished, or sanded it is a monster with tremendous carry, also have a Supernova XP and a Liberator. Nova Xp actually carries off hits better than any ball i have ever seen also, head pin stikes that make my friends shake their heads, don't kknow how but it does, very forgiving. Mine is actually alot stronger than everyone else has talked about.
So far so good, Am I strictly Lane 1, NO. I like trying other companies and have a cell, and 900 Creature on its way to my door as we speak. But as of now I can see myself getting future releases, but the THS does not intrigue me

Wow. The Supernova XP is probably my favorite Saw right now. I'm using it on Scorpion in my PBA Experience league, and I've averaged 226 with it over the past 8 games.
The XP is smooth and doesn't overreact with transition from oil to dry. The cover is holding up very well -- no 'death' issues in the 4 months I've owned it. What's not to like?

The last 2 balls I really didn't like from Lane#1 were the Supernova XP and the Tsunami.
They both rolled exceptionally well for me but I have a mental problem watching balls with a really dark color mixed with a really bright color. Again, it is a mental thing and I have trouble reading those colored balls properly. It is the same reason I use strictly clear and black grips and slugs in all my equipment. If every ball was black with dark logo's I would be in heaven.
Just my stupid brain at work I guess.

I've used a Retro Teal THS for a few league sets, as well as practice sessions, and the ball does exactly what it was designed to do, and what I hoped it would do! Drilled one with a 4 inch pin, 4.0 ounces of top weight, at 4 3/4" X 4 1/2" with pin high over ring, cg slightly shifted right of center in palm. Ball allows me to stay in an area without over / under so commonly seen by others. Smooth, predictable, and not overly aggressive. For me, my PAP is 5 1/4" over, 0 up or down, high track, and medium to high revs. Speed is 16 - 17 mph down the lane, and ball was polished lightly to make sure it cleared the heads for all 3 games. Not a hook monster, or sharp on the backend, but that is NOT what I was looking for or needed. Compared to a Supernova XP, OOB, with same drill pattern, mb just right of thumbhole, Teal is longer and a little sharper on the back.

I have thrown my THS for a few games and it's pretty good but our house shot has a bit more oil than most. Over the summer here they oil them up pretty good so they can get away with not oiling everyday.
I have been holding off on a formal review until we get our lanes redone and they put the original shot back.
In the mean time I'll toss my BuzzBomb and my Evolution!!!
Beans...c'mon man we all know that all manufacturers release a pearl version of a ball when the solid version is well received...or vice versa.
X Facor and the Deuce
Street Rod Pearl and Solid
Ti Messenger and Ti Messenger Pearl
Kinetic and Kinetic Pearl
SuperNova anmd SuperNova XP
G Force and Evolution
Black Widow and BW Pearl
Hammer Pain and Doom
Fired Up and Diablo
Black Cherry Bomb and Pearl Cherry Bomb
Carbide Bomb and Pearl Carbide Bomb
Dirty Bomb and Hybrid Dirty Bomb
Pearl Uranium and Solid Uranium
Golden Nugget and Cranberry
It's in the cards man.....we all know it even without Richie saying anything.

Well I don't know how well received the Liberator is, but I would love to see a pearl urethane with the diamond core... I don't think it will happen but it would be nice.
On edit... oh well I guess that I would the XXL, crap I guess I waited a bit too long to get back in to bowling.
Edited on 6/18/2008 10:54 AM

The XXL was supposed to be pearl urethane but I am not so sure it was 100% Urethane like the Liberator is. My XXL really snapped on the backend and actually absorbed oil. It was a GREAT ball though, and Very Rare!!! My thinking was that it might have been a super week cover with a small amount of plasticizers in it. beans

I have a friend that is using some of the older Brunswick covers from Lane 1(ie the solid Uranium) and some of the Supernovas.
He is new to lane#1 and loves them both!!! A ton! He is tearing our local lanes up with them.....
I have also seen on I believe videoball reviews Chris of Buddies throwing the THS and he makes it look fantastic. i believe it is a lower flaring ball and to me looks like it could be something great for a strong wet dry top hat!
Surprised to hear all the complaints above.

Yeah, it took a little while to get her warmed up, she sure is a stubborn one, whew.

just a question for any of you who have not thrown the non big b covered balls/
what did you think of the old columbia stuff (boss, as well as others)?
I only ask as these new balls are all superflex based, and back in the day the superflex cover was as revered as the powercoil stuff
Personally I have had great sucess with all of the lane #1 stuff, shot literally tons of 279 games with big b covered stuff, but the new stuff gave me two 300 games this year (supernova xp)4 289 games (buzzbomb) and several other 279 games. I find them to roll as well as the big b covered stuff, and other then the buzzbomb find the covers to be very tough (BB scratched fairly easy for my tastes but I am sure it has to do with the dullish finish on it)
Currently in my PBAX league the liberator is the ball of choice, the Teal will be going in the bag as soon as I have some extra cash
