Surface Prep Ideas
« on: January 27, 2009, 12:20:39 AM »
Hey guys,

I have been trying to figure out how I want to set up my arsenal for league. I have been doing pretty well with my BB/R but I have had some issues. This past week I shot 243, 236, 193. A lot better than the 501 the previous week but I was throwing the the ball well and should have shot 700. Any way, I have noticed in this house that Pearls work well. I have both a Cherry Pearl C/2 and BB/R that I am thinking of changing the surface on to help out. My main problem is deciding which one I want to keep polished and the other at a higher grit.

Last year I took a grey scotch brite to the CP by hand lightly when I encountered a little more oil and didn't have anything at the time to use that would handle more oil. It worked very well but then had problems when it got drier. This seems to be common for me at this house. I have only had one pearl at a time so I have not gotten to try to different surface preps at the same time.

So which one should I take up to 4000 grit abralon and which should I keep polished? I get very similar movements with both balls but the CP seems to be a touch longer the way I have them right now. At current surface I only need to move my feet a board or two right to switch between the CP and the BB/R.

Thanks for all the help.

Mike

Roy,

I think I am going to try it this week. I haven't gotten a lot of suggestions with it. I can always switch them next week if it doesn't work very well. I can use either of them polished as is. Just need one little bit lower grit.

Thanks,
Mike

. . . understandable
. . . no many bowlers has it

. . . I throw 15.5 to 16.5 mph QUBICA
. . . used to be a cranker -
. . . now trying to stay behind the ball

. . . I resurfaced this ball to 2k Abralon w/o polish at first
. . . then tried 1k Abralon w/o polish and this is money on fresh

I've tried polishing my Buzzbomb to use the first game and a half but it jumps way too much on our lanes. The pearls work a lot better. I am also going to take my B/G Centaur with me this week and see maybe how it does playing the same line I start out on. I'll have more options this week. The Buzzbomb and Solid Cobalt Bomb will be staying at home. The Cherry Pearl will handle some oil if it is sanded a bit so I am not worried there unless the machine breaks down and floods the lanes.

When I sanded the CP, it was by hand with the gray scotch brite I keep in the bag just for that purpose. Just enough to take the shine off.

I have already tried the Buzzbomb that way. I have had it at 1000, 2000, 4000, and 4000 w/ polish. It is just too strong on the backend for this house. Even my Solid Cobalt is snapping hard on the back when it should be more of an arc ball. Anything dull for me starts too early even if I keep it in the oil. It also depends on what is being thrown on our pair also. If I get a bunch of people in my line then I seem to do better the later games. If not, I do better the first two games. I just can't seem to get all three going this year. I will try the Pearls sanded a bit and see what happens. They seem to be working the best for me right now in this house.

Thanks,
Mike

Well, I tried out the Cherry Pearl at 1000 grit. It worked well the first game (244) But after that I could not find a line (196). Switched to the BB/R and finally to the B/G Centaur last game and may have found an instance to use it from now on (178). I think I will leave everything as is for awhile but start out with the BB/R and then switch to the Centaur when the shot goes away. We have such a puddle in the middle that when the track area dries out, our wall is 10 board out and flooded in the middle by the end of the second game. The centaur let me play between 8-10 and still get down the lane. Trying to play inside is over-under city.

Thanks for all of the help.
