I hate to ask about roto grip ball
« on: April 16, 2008, 04:30:32 AM »
However, my son loves roto grip .  He's got a Cell, however in heavy oil he has to slow his ball down 2-3mph in order for it to hook, it's drilled pin above to the right of ring finger, stacked.  So we plugged his Quest and put the pin below ring finger out to the right and placed MB just to the right of thumb and roughed it up to 500 and in Heavy oil this ball only moved 2-3 boards max. So we found a NIB Oracle and we're going to give it a try.  He's 15yrs old, Throws 15mph, high track, low revs.  Any suggestions I've had a post on the roto grip site for 2 days with no response, so i deleted it. so i said i'll give Lane 1 forum a try.  I don't know squat about symmetrical versus asymmetrical so i don't know if Lane 1 layout will work for roto grip, need your expertise!  we want to get the ball into an early roll in heavy oil.  thought for sure the quest would have worked.

First off, you have to remember that when you do an early rolling layout, its not going to hook a lot ok, especially on heavy oil. The key here on this type of condition is to get the ball into an early role, so it will read the middle and back end of the lane the way that it needs to, inorder to have the highest strike percentage. Another thing, is your son really bowling on heavy oil? The Quest is a very aggressive ball, especially with that covertock, and so if there is too much dry some where it will role out and stop hooking or hook very little. Is there a proshop person there that you could talk to? I would try that if you haven't already and see if he can lead you in the right direction. Hope this helps.

I have both (2 Cells and Epic Quest).  My Cell is drilled 4 x 4 which is next and above my ring finger with MB in the strong position.  My Quest is drilled pin under my ring, MB at 45 degrees which put it 3 inches to the right of my thumb.  For me, the Quest rolls really early and smooth becuase of the Epic weightblock.  You are not going to cover 25 boards on the Shark pattern with this ball or the Cell.  I throw about 16 t0 17 mph with above average revs, high track.  For me, I have to slow down, square up to the hole and keep the ball online in heavy oil.  The one thing you need to realize about the Quest is that it is 2% particle in the cover which is more than the Battle, but with a stronger block.  And what you need to do in heavy oil is to get the ball to read the lane sooner because there is usually no recovery room on a heavy oil pattern because of the volume and length.

My Cell, at 1000 grit will read the lane a little better than the Quest but will not hook back from the 5 board on a heavy oil shot, just tried it last weekend in a tournament.  The advantage of the Cell cover and block is that it hits harder when you do get to the pocket because of its size and shape.  There is no ball out there that will let you stand left, throw right to the ditch, and come screaming back on the Shark pattern or the US Open shot.  Even though it is out of his A game, you have to slow down and give the ball a chance to work.  The Cell is an awesome ball on 90% of the shots out there.  Just go to Youtube and type in Cell Seminar and you can watch a 2 hour seminar from Hank Boomershire, the inventor, tell you all the ins and outs of the Cell. Mine, is the first ball out of the bag and I'll use it most of the time.

Don't give up on it.  It sounds like your son is young enough to learn to adjust his speed and hand positions to play on differing conditions than just the house shot.

Let me know how it goes.

You wouldn't be able to get a video of him bowling for us to see, would you?

(And remember, as always, truly heavy oil is not about hook -- it's about generating roll)
