I have both (2 Cells and Epic Quest). My Cell is drilled 4 x 4 which is next and above my ring finger with MB in the strong position. My Quest is drilled pin under my ring, MB at 45 degrees which put it 3 inches to the right of my thumb. For me, the Quest rolls really early and smooth becuase of the Epic weightblock. You are not going to cover 25 boards on the Shark pattern with this ball or the Cell. I throw about 16 t0 17 mph with above average revs, high track. For me, I have to slow down, square up to the hole and keep the ball online in heavy oil. The one thing you need to realize about the Quest is that it is 2% particle in the cover which is more than the Battle, but with a stronger block. And what you need to do in heavy oil is to get the ball to read the lane sooner because there is usually no recovery room on a heavy oil pattern because of the volume and length.
My Cell, at 1000 grit will read the lane a little better than the Quest but will not hook back from the 5 board on a heavy oil shot, just tried it last weekend in a tournament. The advantage of the Cell cover and block is that it hits harder when you do get to the pocket because of its size and shape. There is no ball out there that will let you stand left, throw right to the ditch, and come screaming back on the Shark pattern or the US Open shot. Even though it is out of his A game, you have to slow down and give the ball a chance to work. The Cell is an awesome ball on 90% of the shots out there. Just go to Youtube and type in Cell Seminar and you can watch a 2 hour seminar from Hank Boomershire, the inventor, tell you all the ins and outs of the Cell. Mine, is the first ball out of the bag and I'll use it most of the time.
Don't give up on it. It sounds like your son is young enough to learn to adjust his speed and hand positions to play on differing conditions than just the house shot.
Let me know how it goes.
