Blue Death Outing
« on: December 03, 2009, 02:30:13 PM »
This was my first set in our 5 man league with the Blue Death.

I started the night at 28 with my feet playing 14 to 8. I ran the first 9. The first ball in the 10th had all the symptoms of me choking on a potential 300....didn't get the ball out, went high and lef tthe 6-10. Of course I was sooooo disappointed I didn't have my head on straight for the spare and whiffed it for a 264 game.

Game 2 saw my teammate start fishing around on the right (high speed and rev rate swinging the lane) so my shot got a little erratic. I moved 2 and 2 inside and stayed in the pocket but my carry suffered. I shot 202 with 2 easy missed single pin spares.

Game 3 I moved back to where I started and started with the first 3 then threw back to back splits as the backend just blew wide open. I 9 spared and struck the rest of the game for a 212. I ended up with my feet on 35 and playing 16 to as far right as the ball would push.

So I shot a 678 on the night that should have easily been a 700...the Blue Death got easy length and had a consistent reaction for me down the lane. I had been moving area codes each and every game in the past. The Blue Death let me play in my comfort zone all night.

Thus far I am averaging 233 with this ball. My league averages for the season are sub-200 in all of my leagues.

The combination of the ball (thanks Chuck and Richie!), my new grip (thanks Mo!!!) and the different layout (again thanks Mo for the Dual Angle layout technique) are all contributing to this confidence I have right now.

Again I think this ball from Lane 1 is going to be their biggest seller in years....you have got to try one.

If I had both balls drilled the same the Red would outhook the Blue in the midlane by quite a bit. The Blue will have more backend than teh Red. This is due to the coverstock...the Red is a solid/solid hybrid while the Blue is a solid/pearl hybrid.

With that said I see the Blue getting more length and having a sharper backend reaction. The Red will rev harder midlane and start it's move earlier with a smoother and more even reaction.

Total difference? Depending on drill pattern and your style I would guess somewhere between 6 and 10 boards total.

Go down to where Doug was talking about drilling the Massacore. May help.

Well Randy the layout you want to use is going to depend on where the guys want the ball to fit in.

My BD is drilled pin about an inch under the bridge and the cg out:

http://www.dougsproshop.net/images/MyArsenal/bluedeathlayout.jpg

This puts the pin 5-1/4" off my PAP and the cg approx. 4" off the PAP.

The ball gets easy length no matter my ball speed. The cg out drilling normally gets the ball into a roll a bit earlier than a stacked layout or a label type drilling. However with this core design I am not seeing that.

My Red Death is 6x5 (or there abouts) with the pin over middle and it gives me a defined skid-snap reaction. This Blue Death is a bit calmer at the breakpoint due to the pin down drilling I am assuming but it still has a very strong and defined backend reaction.

I am thinking that your guys would benefit from this type of drilling since you will get the length you desire but will also give them the backend move they desire even without a lot of hand.

I would suggest you lay the ball out using Mo's Dual Angle method since every Massacore ball I have laid out with his technique has reacted exactly the way it should have based on Mo's descriptions.

Don't be afraid to go pin under with this ball since it does get a lot of length easily.

Doug,

I have had 2 people say ball needs a long pin close to 5 " for this to work but it appears your pin is about 3 1/2

I have my BD drill CG leverage with the pin around 1 o'clock  cg out with a x hole.I only was able to use it for a game and a half since we were on a 2nd shift league and it was very hot in the house.1st game with the ball OOB was a 259 then the lanes started to fly.2nd game 1st 2 then spare strike 8-10, and back to back 7-10 splits. So I switched to my Gemstone. So far with a game and a half I like the outcome of the ball.Hopefully will have more next week

My pin is a 3-4 Randy...yeah pretty close to 3-1/2".

Remember long pins make the core taller and make it lope and snap. Short pins shorten the core and make it rev up quicker.

I don't think you want a 5" pin on this ball or it will end up VERY flippy.

Doug,
I''m really interested in getting a Blue Death but I talked to my ball driller and he feels this ball will be too much for me. I''m a stroker/tweener who''''''''s rev dominant and at times struggle to keep the ball on the right side of the pins when they get toasted but ordinarily I''m ok. Bowl on older wood lanes which do tend to dry out during the night but have been better lately/last couple months. Ball speed is 14.5 according to the lane system but I''ve always been told I can add about 1.5 mph to that to get a true reading. My main ball right now is a Hammer Raw Doom....
My question is: Just how much length does this ball get and will it handle true medium THS conditions ok. I see in the ratings that it''s for heavier conditions, but almost all the posts talk about easy length....just curious what your feelings are about what exactly this ball can handle. Of course when the lanes get truly toasted, I have other balls to go to......

I feel that the Blue Death is going to be a great ball for all mediums. Even a rev dominant bowler should be able to use this ball with a control layout.

Using Mo's Dual Angle layout technique with a high first angle, a long pin length and a large second angle will get the ball long with a late roll and smooth transition at the friction.

I think it would work very well.
