Buzzbomb/R opinions
« on: December 22, 2009, 01:25:29 AM »
I was wanting to hear from folks who had thrown or seen thrown a Buzzbomb/R from Lane #1.  I picked one up but haven't done anything with it but I have noticed that it has been a Lane #1 ball that has been heavily discounted.  Almost like they can't wait to get rid of it.

So, I was just seeking others who had some knowledge about the ball on its reaction, best lane condition, and/or what is wrong with the ball to be closed out so quickly.  Thanks for your opinions.

Scott

I picked up a NIB BB/R at the end of the summer. The ball hadn't received a lot of love in general. But I was very happy with my original BB, so I went for a BB/R.

The BB/R has exceeded all expectations. The pearl cover (on the duller side) picks up a nice heavy mid-lane roll and is very predictable on the backends. It's become my 'go-to' ball in second shift league where I can play a tighter line right inside the oil line without worrying about over reaction.

I think a lot of bowlers didn't take to the BB/R because it doesn't fall into the category of "skid long, break hard". And if you have lower revs, the ball probably won't do much for you. But if you're more into control and scoring than how many boards you can cover on the backend, the BB/R is a winner.

For all the love being given to the Red Death, my BB/R will come out of the bag first. As much a I like the Red Death, I find the BB/R more versatile over a wider range of conditions.

Enjoy one of the better kept secrets in ball choices.

Steven, I think some like myself that don't have much hand or a lot of revs may not have cared for it because the big heavy core in it needed more hand and revs than cores not that big. I know that when I was able to impart a few extra revs on it, it performed better, but I couldn't do those extra revs consistently.

Brick: I definitely agree with your thoughts. The BB core does roll very heavy, which does not lend itself to lower rev releases. I don't tear the cover off the ball, but I get enough on it where I tend to like heavier rolling pieces.

When I got my BBR I could not get it in my hands soon enough as I love my BuzzBomb. However I did something stupid and drilled the ball with a layout (4x4 stacked) that I had not had a lot of luck with in the past but had never tried on a ball like this. Well it flopped and I sold the ball rather than plug and redrill it.

I had the same anticipation everybody else did....lots of length and backend like a rubberband. Well this ball does not have that. It is a very control oriented piece. Most people had the idea that this was going to be like the G Force Evolution...long and a ferocious backend. Uh, no....not this ball.

Do I regret selling the ball? Absolutely....the ones I sold locally are still in use and the guys are able to control the backend of the lane much easier than I can with my newer stuff.

Great piece....just doesn't hook like a monster.

The BB/R is a hidden gem.  My BB/R is drilled 4 1/2 x 4.  One word for this ball would be Reliability.  It has allowed me to play on almost any lane condition but extreme dry.  I would choose your layout wisely.  At our center we only have 4 bowlers throwing this ball.  All have different styles and we have had 3 800's and 3 300's with it.  I'd say its discounted because its an older ball.  Ball companies are always changing there lines to fast and its a shame.  If your using its for THS you can use it the entire night with minmal moves.  I also use it for the late league also it enables me to move inside the track and get enough hit in the carrydown oil.  That's what I wanted the ball to do when it was drilled.  Good luck let us know how you make out.

Fairly condition-specific and bowler-specific, but it's not a bad ball.

My best luck with it is when I slow-wheel it and cross a lot of boards. It seems to be fairly speed-sensitive, especially in box condition. Mine is drilled something like 3.5 x 2.

Highest average in our house right now is a guy who uses this as his A-ball. He took his to either 2000 or 4000 with no polish and he can play in the oil with it. Mine is in box finish and it has to see some dry to work properly.

Judging from your profile, if you intend to keep it in box finish, prepare for it to be a medium or medium-dry piece for you unless you can get in and wheel on it a little. When I do that with this ball, I'm impressed with the smoothness and the carry, not to mention that I can go up to medium-heavy with it. When I try to play more up the boards I end up leaving corners and weird stuff on the back row.

The ball it reminds me most of from Lane #1's offerings is the Tsunami H20. I'm not sure I could compare it to anything else from someone else's product line. The lack of a booming backend, even on the dry (strange for a pearl) makes it sort of unique. The coverstock is some variant of SuperFlex, I'm told.

I have one, and love it. I paid $40.00(used). Plugged it and have made alot of money with it. I actually just won an ABT tournament with it. I even threw 2 different lines with it. 15-10 on certain lanes, and 25-10 on others, very versatile ball. Mine is drilled pin down, cg out. This is a must have ball. I did adjust the cover to roughly 700 abralon no polish. Used a real weak 500 pad.(used)
