Blueberry or Cranberry for carrydown
« on: October 06, 2003, 06:02:45 PM »
Hey everyone,

I've been using my Cherry Bomb for quite a while now and I've loved it since day 1. However, with it being a pearl, it doesn't quite cut it when the oil carries down. Therefore, I'm tryign to find another Lane 1 ball that will allow me to cut through the oil further down the lane. Of course, the Black Cherry Bomb would be an obvious choice, as it was designed for exactly this scenario. But after hearing a friend of mine, O, claim that his BCB has not really been impressive on this condition, I'm starting to wonder whether or not a Blueberry or Cranberry might be a better choice. My A game is to stroke the ball with a high track and slightly above average speed, but I am fully capable of cranking the ball up and/or changing hand positions and angles when the need arises. Would the Blueberry or Cranberry work on carrydown, and if so, what drilling might you suggest. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Gene, talk to Doug Sterner or T-God about this as both are very good at these kind of decisions. Doug has laid out and drilled both a Blueberry and Emerald for me and has done a super job with the layout as well as the drilling.

Gene,

Although I don't own a BB, I have had a Black Raspberry and an Emerald.  If I compare that core to the core of the Cranberry, I would definately choose the BB for carrydown.  My Emerald rolls very early while my Cranberry lopes half way down before it gets into a heavy roll/snap.  They are both drilled similar; pin under the ring finger (4 1/4" from pap) and the cg is kicked out to a 45-50 degree layout.  For carrydown, you want the ball to get into an early roll, so a 4x3 or a 4x2 would work, with a weight hole on your pap.  A 45 degree layout would work great for carrydown.  You may also have to break the shine a little to get it to turn, depending on how heavy the carrydown is.  Take care....JS

Riiiight, I'd pick neither of them.  The Blueberry is a medium condition control ball.  If your Cherry Bomb doesn't cut it, a Blueberry will look like a plastic ball unless you sand it big time.  I'd see if you could find a Carbide Bomb, a Super Carbide, or a Carbide LRG.  My LRG IGNORED carrydown.  I could play further right on a sport pattern with it than anybody else could.  Excellent reaction in oil.  I can't imagine a Black Cherry Bomb not doing well on carrydown, especially with the kind of hand you have.  Does your friend not have much hand, or is the ball rolling out too early?  The grit might also be too low.  But nooo, I'd laugh if I saw somebody try to throw a Blueberry on carrydown, and the Cranberry is too close to it to consider as well.  Like Brickguy said, talk to Doug Sterner, his opinion is the definitive one.  Listen to him, and follow his advice, he'll steer you in the right direction.

I find it hard to believe that none of the famous Lane#1 supporters have answered your request yet; so I'll take a reasonable stab at this quetsion.

If the Cherry Bomb is not handling carrydown, then the Cranberry/Blueberry is not likely to do it, at least in box condition, as they are highly polished, even though they are solid to the CB's pearl. Theoretically the BCB, being a solid, is the next proper step up in oil handling ability, and given all the raves by the Lane#1 community and the BTM review (the BJI review is much more reserved), it should be able to handle the carrydown that the CB cannot.

How different is your friend's release, speed and track from yours that you would assume  that your BCB would act the same way as his?
If your track is higher, then your ball will start hooking earlier than his, eliminating some of the carrydown problem.

What drilling does he have?
If it is a weak drilling or weaker than you might drill it, then one with more flare would be able to handle more oil and more carrydown.

Did he dull his ball's surface at all, even slightly?
That is a natural mod to handle more oil.

The next Lane#1 step up beyond the BCB is the Super Carbide Bomb and that's only for SUPER-heavy oil conditions.

Since the CB and the BCB use such a strong high flaring core, and given that the BCB has what is supposed to be a more aggessive cover than the Blueberry/Cranberry's Power Koil 18 cover, I find it hard to believe that the Blueberry, even sanded, would do a better job than the BCB sanded.

Charlest, I think the Lane 1 supporters have chosen to "take a break" and "rest up" after the overwhelming attack on us the past couple of days..

My sanded BB destroys on carrydown(and everything else for that matter!). If you(Gene) can vary your release and speed, then I dont see why it wouldnt work for what you need it for. Drilling? I favor the simple 3by5 with the CG on the grip centerline. I cant say if that would work for you but I sure like it!
