Title: Bought a Starburst XXXL. After throwing it...
Post by: JessN16 on January 07, 2009, 04:48:40 PM
I have to wonder why more companies don't take one of their nicer cores and wrap it in plastic.

How much harder could it be, say, for Storm to take the FE2 core out of the Thunder series -- which they've been making now for almost 20 years -- and put it in the Ice Storm rather than just a pancake block?

I bought a NIB XXXL Starburst off Triggerman last month and drilled it, and had just been using it for spares until this week, when the combination of warm weather, everyone else on my pair using aggressive reactive stuff, the lane guy not compensating for the weather change and the pair we were on having a history of being harder-hooking than most made me have to go to the XXXL in our third game.

What a difference in carry this thing has over most plastic. I guess it might have to do with the more center-heavy core or the RG numbers, but I think if I'd gotten lined up with this ball in the first game I could have scored from the outset.

Other companies are kind of missing the boat by not doing the same with their equipment if you ask me. For people who see dry lanes a lot, I think they give up 10 pins a game if they don't have something like this in their bag. If I were to combine this ball with my Visionary Slate Blue Gargoyle, I could create a pretty mean dry-lane arsenal. With lane oil becoming more scarce everywhere I've bowled, I might have to consider doing just that.

The charm of a true core is the abilty of the ball to get into a roll, thus reducing the "splattering" effect of pancake pieces. On true dry lanes, this is a real edge compared to simple pancake polyester balls - the powerful finish.

Extremely limited demand.  Even weaker resin balls are hard to find these days because the general market wants hook monsters and that's it.  Only your higher-level bowlers in general see the need in having weak equipment for drier lane conditions.

I understand your point, but I've traveled around a good amount and have found most of the people I talk to all say the same thing, they want equipment to start getting geared weaker, not stronger, with all the strong equipment we kill a shot so quick and many places don't put out the heavy oil need for the latest and greatest hook monster. I'm just assuming though the sales demand still shows the high end as the biggest sellers, its just disappointing that I'm happy to be able to use my Hy-Road because that means I found some oil.

My next purchase will probably be a Chainsaw or a Roto Grip Neptune. I'm having to drill everything at least 4.5-by these days, and even my 5-by stuff is too strong on many nights.

That's one reason I've never understood the hysteria about controlling scores. You can do it very easily -- quit oiling the lanes (or quit oiling them as much, at least). One of the reasons my team was successful last night is that three of the four people on the other team were all trying to throw leverage-drilled Black Widow Pearls. The top series on their team came from the one guy (and only pure stroker) throwing a Zone Classic. I was high on our side, and I *started* the night with a Uranium HRG, then switched to an old Ebonite Matrix Conquest drilled 5.5-by with the MB in a neutral position. Even it was moving too much in the third game -- and the Matrix Conquest was a tame ball even when it was released.

I'm tempted to try the Liberator, but I already have a Visionary Red Sorcerer and despite it being a polished urethane solid, it still moves too early when the shot is really dry. Considering how dull-surfaced the Liberator looks to be, I can imagine having the same problem. Heck, the reason I went to the XXXL is sometimes even my Slate Blue Gargoyle, which is urethane pearl, reads too soon.

The xxxl is a wonderful piece as is the Purple Sumo. I however cant play straight even with the xxl and the purple sumo is a medium oil ball for me if I keep it away from the dry touch dry and it will hook until its off the lane.

I had a Purple Sumo at one time. Granted, I threw the ball a lot differently than I do now but I could never get it to work for me. It read too early to be useful on true dry, and was an automatic 10-pin leaver on top of that.

I have both the Chainsaw and the XXXL Starburst....
As stated above the XXXL is one great plastic ball, mine is drilled label. This ball carrys pins and is very controllable. The Chainsaw is one of the most controllable/Consistant balls I have ever thrown. Even compared to my XXL this ball reads the lanes with a consistant smooth roll. These two work great on carry down and dry lanes. Just my .02.

I believe it is 260 grit which is what I have it at. I have low ball speed and it will outhook anything in my bag if it finds dry if it does not it will make a nice even small move. I find I can really play havoc with this and my xxxl in the same bag(Im notorious for being able to switch between the 2 at will and stay in the pocket and cause one of the spottiest shots you will find. Lastly when I throw the Sumo I feel like Im gunna fall asleep waiting for it to get to the other end it honestly slows way down going down the lane but its carry is very impressive to me. I carry high better with this than even my gravity shift, purple rhino and needless to say my xxxl is simply strong at the pins even with the weak sound it makes. Lastly I tend to play better with a ball thats been plugged any idea why and I have yet to throw a ball drilled for someone else and changed to fit my hand that I havent got a good reaction out of(Ive thrown balls even on the extremes such as a high tracking strokers ball and low tracking spinners ball and everything in between, my question is why can I use others drilled stuff and plugged stuff better than I can the new versions. For instance I grabbed an inferno with low games a while back and it reacted wonderfully once plugged took and bought one from local shop that fixed the first one for me drilled it the same and it didnt feel the same at all even after putting some games on it.

The Purple Sumo was an amazing ball. That plastic shell was also very soft and really gripped the lane for plastic....

I would kill to have that poly cover on a XXXL...
I wonder if Phil could pour that ball or if it was imported back then. I guess Mo pinel would know.

You dont have to quit oiling the lanes to lower the scores. Just put out a more challenging shot than a THS.

I can't see much difference between the Red and the Starburst, but one guy on my current league has the original black one and his ball is noticeably stronger than  the Starburst. Surface looks to be different. There aren't any Reds around here so it's hard to say. I do know the surface on the only Red I've ever seen didn't appear to have as much polish from the factory as the Starburst, which is perhaps the slickest ball I've ever held. It feels like it has a higher polish than even White Dots have. I'm sure that's some kind of illusion but sheesh.

Same ball, the Starburst just looks better going down the lane!

Also I guess my house has started putting out more oil. I had been in about an eight week slump, hadn't hit 600 in that long. Then I got an Agent Orange, took it to 4000 and polished it. Last two weeks 636 and 734. I love it! Use the Starburst for spares, the Chainsaw stays in the locker!
