Help with Supernova
« on: March 05, 2008, 01:57:29 AM »
I've had my supernova for about 80 games. When I first bought the ball I loved the reaction. It would hit the pocket and continue to drive through. Even when I didn't throw it far enough right it would go brooklyn and just kill the pins. It seemed like I couldn't miss. The last couple of times it just seems really weak. I'm not getting near the pin action and it's not hooking near as much. When I do hit the pocket with it it just seems to have no drive left. I've also started to leave a bunch of 10 pins which I didn't when the ball was new. I don't know if that's relevant though. The lanes are alway medium to heavy. I clean my ball pretty regularly. I've started wondering if it was my release, but everything feels the same. I don't have another ball right now to test that theory since I just started back bowling. I'll have my new one this weekend. I tried to throw a friend's ball but it doesn't fit right so I know I'm not throwing his right. I've heard some people on here talk about ball death. How would you describe it? 80 games doesn't seem to me like enough games for a ball to die. Any help would be appreciated

do you clean the ball after each league night ?

has your lane condition changed that it is effecting the ball reaction ?

could be as well that the ball surface tracked so much that it is time to resurface it !!  or you might just need to extract the oil out of it (ask your proshop about this service)

80 games is so far from ball death .. especially with lane1 balls.  I actually have 2 SuperNovas with more than 100 games each and yet they are as good as the day I drilled them

i have a supernova too
and it died but its an easy fix
get a big bucket of medium to hot water NOT TOO HOT
add some dishwashing soap (dawn works great ) and makes some bubbles
then put in the ball completely and let it soak for about 30mins
take it out dry off
and BANG THAT SUCKER WILL HOOK

Thanks for the reply. I've never had a ball resurfaced. How many games do you usually bowl before getting this done? Also what does resurfacing do that brings reaction back? My proshop has a special this month on resurfacing and polishing for $25. Is that a good deal?

Use the hot water bath first.

A home hot water heater should never heat water hot enough to damage a bowling ball. The sure way to check is with a thermometer or a temp gun. Mine is at 125 which works great for a ball bath and doesn't scald people.

I'm on the opposite side of the fence here. My Nova lost quite a bit of it's bite, but I like it that way. I've been playing straight up the right side lately with it. When I first bought it, I couldn't keep it right of the head pin.

se7en, That's exactly how I have to play mine now, but I got so used to its reaction its hard to adjust. On the bad side I don't get near as many strikes. If I have to look at the good side I don't need a spare ball to get the ten pen.

Sounds to me like that ball may need both the oil extracted & a fresh polish job. You don't really have to resurface it if the polish is just worn off the track, just have it polished again. The hot water bath should remove the oil buildup & help restore the reaction.
