Red Death: is there a lane condition
« on: December 02, 2009, 01:33:57 AM »
That this ball will work on?  I have tried three bowling centers at different times of the day and this ball just hooks off the chart (lane). Unuseable in box condition except maybe on longer heaviy oil.

This is not a slam against the ball.

I took the Red Death out while pot bowling on a fresh house shot go the ball a little right, about 1/2 board and the ball recoverd crushed the pocket and left the 4 pin.  That was the only time I was able to keep the ball on the right side of the pocket.

Yes I can re-drill the ball weaker, its currently drilled 4 stacked.  But I won't.

Yes I can adjuct the surface and I will eventually, but only after I get about 10-15 games on it to see if it tones down on its own.  I know I can use 4000 Ablaron, polish, compound and various other products, but because I track medium low, I expect the ball to tame on its own through use during pracatice.  If not I will probably start with 4000 Ablaron, water, high speed on a spinner.

This ball reads the back end much stronger then the Agent Orange.  The back end rating of 120 of 125 is much more accurate in my opinion then the back end rating of other balls such as the Dynamo and especially the Buzzbomb.

Thanks for reading,

Nic, this is the reason I drilled mine as weak as I did...drilled the ball 6x4-1/2 ish.

Chuck told me the ball was going to be strong...stronger than either the Agent Orange or BuzzBomb.

Mine is 2000 out of the box and I added a nice coat of Sauce on top of the box finish.

The ball will tame down some but you may want to look into taking the surface to 4000.

70 x 5.5 x 30 drilling, late break point shape, and that is exactly what I got out of this peice, it is longer the any solid I have but has an easy push down lane with a remarkable hard change of direction for a solid, Ive left it in box condtion, although it has developed a nice sheen to it, other then short oil, I can throw this on just about anything

by compaison I drilled the Blue death 70 x 5.5 x 35  not much of a diffeence but the two balls are totally different lines, the BD likes the outside on fresh and tears up a broken down shot, gets way better on the shot as the night breaks it down

RD has been my go to ball all league, the reaction and hit gets some heads turning, I will probably take the cover back to 2k abralon and use it for the soup tho as the BD has proven its worth on the fresh shot

Me:
PAP = 4 1/8 over and 5/16 down
15.5 to 16.4 QUBICA speed
around 350 revs

Mo mentioned: "Lower track players need smaller drilling angles to get the ball to roll up soon enough."

Mo's suggested drill for me (low tracker) was 30* x 4" x 30* to achieve a strong backend reaction(http://www.morichbowling.com/Drilling/BowlingBallDrilling.htm).

Using 4" from Pin to CG, the pin ends up about 1/4 inch next to the ring finger.
The pin is too close to the finger hole that it may promote a crack so I opted for 5.5" and the pin is about an inch above my bridge.

I used Mo Pinel's Dual Angle drill - 30* x 5.5" x 30*

I practiced last night on freshly oiled lanes 40' and faded another 4'.
With left foot at 39th board, 13 at the arrows out to 8-9, the ball held its line for all three games - I just keep adjusting 1-1.5 boards to the left each game. Entry to the pocket is not that explosive as my other Lane #1s but it sent a couple of messengers a game.

I averaged low 200s during practice (and a mug of beer)- currently holding an average of 193 at this house and lane condition.

I'll try to resurface the ball to 4k Abralon and report back

Doug,

The agent Orange was/is a really good ball, the Buzzbomb did not work for me at all and the Dynamo which was suppose to handle a lot of oil and hook a ton was a small let down for me.

But the Red Death is something special imo.  I have not found a condition I can throw the Red Death on and score well.  But only because that ball is so strong.  Handles oil very well and the ball does not roll out or quit.  I will throw it again tomorrow in practice and along side the Mega Friction drilled the same.

At practice today a bowler I bowl with brought his Red Death to practice and his Red Death is polished.  He is a lefty and was playing deeper then I have ever seen a lefty play just trying to keep the ball on the left side of the pins.  The ball never quit for him either but the ball was too much even polished.

After throwing it tomorrow if I can''t tame it down a little, I''ll try 2000 Abalron and maybe eventually 4000 Ablaron.

I track a little low and my ball speed is about 18, so to see the reaction of this impresses me even more.

Nic: I tested out a Red Death my proshop guy has. Our grips are very similar, so I got a good feel for the ball.

He had already taken the surface up to 4000 grit Abralon, and the ball still covers a lot boards. Continuous arc with no quit.....

I liked the ball so much that I bought it from him. I'll be picking it up this weekend after the span and thumb are re-done, and throw some practice games. I'm leaving the surface at 4000 for the time being, because I can't imagine many situations where I would be able to use it with the box cover.

I have a Red Death, but haven't drilled it yet. Plan to drill it hopefully within the next 1 1/2 to 2 weeks if not sooner.

Well Barry here's my take on your experiences...

Agent Orange and BuzzBomb....in my opinion the coverstock on teh BuzzBomb was way too strong for it's own good. The combination of the cover and the very strong core made a deadly combination for the right people with the right drilling but for many the BB just flopped. The pearl cover on the Agent Orange made a ball that was much more friendly for most people. I never got the coverstock prepped on my AO the way I wanted it so it hit the auction block.

The Dynamo was somewhat problematic for me. In my quest to round out the ball reactions in my bag I chose a 4x4 layout with this ball in hopes I could get strong midlane roll and a even backend reaction. What I got was 8" of flare and a hit that resembled a pile of Kool Whip. I tried to change the surface but it didn't help...all flare and no hit. I was hoping to get a "Black Raspberry-esque" reaction and hit but it didn't ever arrive.

My Red Death is a great ball drilled pin over middle with the cg under the ring. I think Lane 1 is onto something with the Massacore. The original Massacre was a little overhyped but the Red Death is a beast and the Blue Death is even better IMO.
