BuzzSaw - Sacrificed for Science Research (Brief Update 5/22/06)
« on: February 22, 2006, 12:48:49 AM »
Well, I've got a research student working on a physics project of
mine to analyze, calculate, and experimentally measure some of the
rotational dynamics of bowling ball cores.

So, I'm sacrificing some of my Lane#1's to the cause. --sniff--
What we won't do to push science and understanding forward.

Anyway, here is an image of the inside of my Cherry C^2. Very interesting, eh?

http://faculty.salisbury.edu/%7Ejwhoward/temp/CherryC2_Core.JPG

Next step, to remove all but the core from both halves so that we can
conduct an experiment to determine the moment of inertia experimentally.

link broke
you probably could have contacted lane1 and gotten a core to test. would have had more accurate results also.

Nice... and the green filler is pretty, too. I was surprised to find that my Blade Particle had a deep yellow(!) filler - found out without cutting it in halves, though.

Dr. Joe, that looks pretty cool.  What did you guys use to cut it in half with?  Be sure to post results, and if you compare that core to any others.

Oh, and here is a Track Voodoo core just for comparison.

Very different construction materials...

Hmmmm.... I should take a picture of the contraption that was used to
slice the balls in half...

but, imagine if you will something that is part ball spinner and part
clamped saw.... that is MacGyver'ed together.

Well, here is an update. We have started to remove cores from the balls.
It is not as tough as I would have thought. Some surprising observations about
ball construction so far - there is a lot of variation between materials
included inside the balls, there is variation of cover thickness between
manufacturers and cover thickness variation within single balls, and the
core material is really really dense stuff...wow.

Anyway, here is a picture(s) of one of the cores removed.

Will post photos of the lane cores soon.

Well, here ya go. The core of the CherryC^2. Plus the leftovers.

That green stuff is very dense compared to the grey filler.

In the first link

http://faculty.salisbury.edu/%7Ejwhoward/temp/CherryC2_Core.JPG

what is the long white rod that runs all the way down the core--an extension of the pin?  I didn't think that pins ran all the way down the length of a ball core.  If that isn't what it is, what is it?

Yup, at least in this core it had a long rod extending the entire length of
the core. (Cherry C^2). I'm guessing this was needed because the core has two
parts, the yellow mini diamonds, then the large green diamond surrounding.

Next up, getting the core out of a cracked cover cherry bomb... plus some other
assorted goodies...

At this point I have no idea. I'm in the mechanical ripping cores out stage.
I'll figure out the materials later. I will say, it acts a lot like chalk... very dense and strong chalk... but chalky nonetheless.
