BuzzSaw - Sacrificed for Science Research (Brief Update 5/22/06)
« on: February 22, 2006, 12:48:49 AM »
Well, I've got a research student working on a physics project of
mine to analyze, calculate, and experimentally measure some of the
rotational dynamics of bowling ball cores.

So, I'm sacrificing some of my Lane#1's to the cause. --sniff--
What we won't do to push science and understanding forward.

Anyway, here is an image of the inside of my Cherry C^2. Very interesting, eh?

http://faculty.salisbury.edu/%7Ejwhoward/temp/CherryC2_Core.JPG

Next step, to remove all but the core from both halves so that we can
conduct an experiment to determine the moment of inertia experimentally.

I am enjoying this post.  I was wondering if you would like to have a Brunswick Zone (Danger Zone?) that I have sitting in my closet.  The cover is cracked all the way around.  I had maybe 3 games on it.  It's black with white and red "zone" on it.  I'd be willing to donate it as I know it's pretty worthless to me.

Okay, here is another update. We have carved up another Lane #1 ball.
A Cherry Bomb. So, first the images to ponder...

The leftovers of the destruction process...

http://faculty.salisbury.edu/%7Ejwhoward/temp/CherryBombBits.JPG

And images of the core & pin.

http://faculty.salisbury.edu/%7Ejwhoward/temp/CherryBomb1.JPG

http://faculty.salisbury.edu/%7Ejwhoward/temp/CherryBomb2.JPG

http://faculty.salisbury.edu/%7Ejwhoward/temp/CherryBomb3.JPG

I'm getting better at getting the cores out of the balls, once I know the
approximate size, I can use a power saw to rip most of the outer ball off,
then use a high speed dremel tool to get the remaining material off. In fact,
I was able to very carefully remove the coverstock from around the pin and
remove it in one piece this time. You might notice a bit of plug material in
the above core, the finger hole drilling removed some of the core near the
pin.

The material inside the Cherry Bomb was different than the Cherry C^2. It was
much tougher stuff and very very dusty when removing. The core material seemed
to be less dense. Anyway, hope you are still interested in my reports.

Calculations and experimental results are also in the works. So stay tuned.

Nice to offer, but I have plenty of donated balls to carve up. Thanks
anyway.

Here is another update for the afternoon folks....

I have a small movie of the experimental apparatus that we have cobbled
together to experimentally calculate the rotational moment of inertia about
a fixed spin axis. We can pick any axis we want, use some conservation of
energy calculations, and determine an experimental result. We are then
going to compare the experimental results to the theoretical calculations we
are doing (think lots of calculus, intergrals, and mathematics). It might
not look like much, but that is the neat thing about physics, it doesn't
have to be fancy to get results that are accurate and that can be analyzed
for information.

We can use any core about any fixed axis. Kinda neat, eh?

Anywho...

Ah well, it just makes the others all that more of a treasure for those that
want them. Thems the breaks.

I would expect that the original diamond core will have the best results out of anything, considering it has the ability to spin with the least instability and therefore loss of energy.

EDIT:  My statement about "best" in regards to energy retension during the spin phase.

Okay, I've gotten a few messages wanting to "see" the process to remove one
of these cores. So, over the weekend I documented the process while removing
a uranium pearl core. (Thanks Richie!).

First the buzzsaw to cut up. Such a pretty ball, no doubt.

http://faculty.salisbury.edu/%7Ejwhoward/temp/uranium.JPG

And then along the way. Can you say lots of dust and sawing. I had to have
on a respirator mask, goggles, hat, gloves,...etc. Lots and lots of dust.

http://faculty.salisbury.edu/%7Ejwhoward/temp/ucore1.JPG

Then, using a roto-zip cutting/grinding tool for the finer detail work. You
start to see the core emerge from the filler material

http://faculty.salisbury.edu/%7Ejwhoward/temp/ucore2.JPG

Then you are left with the following leftovers when all the careful detail
work is finised. (Plus the 2 hours of clean-up that goes with it.)

http://faculty.salisbury.edu/%7Ejwhoward/temp/ubits.JPG

The final uranium core..

http://faculty.salisbury.edu/%7Ejwhoward/temp/ucore3.JPG

So, we now have the full set of cores/shapes to continue our testing.

Hey, actual REAL science & PHYSICS concepts applied to these core designs.
This is something I would like to point out since there has been a lot
debate in a couple threads lately about lane one cores.

Anyway, enjoy!
