What do you think about this.
« on: July 25, 2003, 01:07:18 AM »
I have a question about the presale and why the people that offer them are so hard up to sale, sale, sale.Their are a few people on here "you know who you are"That realy push the sale of new saws, more so than any other ball.Infact more so than any other ball. Why?I may have a good idea why.Free balls one free ball with the purchase of every four.Sweet deal for the seller not so sweet for the buyer. You can opp for cash discount in stead of the free ball so you take off the discount of witch the free ball would cost from the total of the four balls.Black cherry bomb cost seller any where from 130.00 to 179.00 depending on the volume not counting the free balls or cash discount. So they make a little off of selling the ball in witch is dropped shipped in most cases to the buyer then they make a 100% profit off of the free ball that they recieve.I dodnt know about yall but this irratates me to see them do this.I dont care if the people get made or not, they act like thier doing us a favor or something when they are reaping the reward for doing nothing but turning in a order that they dont even touch in most cases.

there is nothing wrong with making a profit. selling one free ball out of 5 isn't a large profit. sure they could lower the price of the balls by that much... But hey we all need to make a profit. Ever had you heat and air replaced???  The profit would scare you!! I used to own a furniture store. If I bought something for 500.00 it sold for at least 1000.00

So come on, let these guys feed their families. If you want a ball.... just pay for it or go on...

Just my .02  profit...

Well nine-out I'll respond here as a shop that sells these balls and had a pre-order program here.

Car manufacturers do the exact same thing. You either buy what's on the lot or put your order in for the new hot model that's coming in a few weeks. Why do people do this? So they get a guarantee that they will be able to get one.

Some people are obsessed with having the first of any given ball in their bowling center. Personally, I don't care but then I am the only one using a Buzzsaw at my lanes.

As for why we do it...simple. The more we know we can have orders for, the more capital we have to work with and the more we have to work with, the more we can buy.  When I took orders for the Cherry Bombs I had enough extra profit that I bought Buzzsaw towels and gave them to my top Buzzsaw buyers. If I missed anyone with that, lemme know.

It's true some buy 4 get 1 frees exist but not on every ball. And when they do exist it is a 1 shot deal. Good on 1 order only.

Why push Buzzsaws? They are the best ball on the market and if we get more people using them, then as production needs increase, Lane 1 can get some pricebreaks and maybe the price will go down.

As for the drop shipping, it is very rare that I do this. I don;t think drillwizard does it that often either but we do know that placed like Carter's Pro Shop and BlockbusterBowling and I think even BuddiesProShop (I could be wrong but I think so) do this. If someone needs a ball ASAP I will have them drop ship for me to help get it there quicker but I like to go over every ball I get in and be sure there are no cracked pins, out of line pins, cgs or mass biases, no flat spots etc. I also measure all of my pins when they come in so I know EXACTLY what I am sending to my customers.

I have gotten burned more than once...the box says 2-3" and I get a 1-1/2" pin. Won't mention any brand name that is common for this but they pioneered the clear polyester balls... :-) Storm on the other hand runs long pins. Of the 3 cases of ReLoadeds I got in, no box read more than a 3-3.5" pin. I have 3 of them over 4". Ain't that great????

So call us what you must but we push the greatest balls on the planet because we believe in them and the more people we can get the balls to, the more believers there will be.

Doug,

Stop it already. There is no reason on heaven and earth for you to feel you have to justify the profit margin on selling a product with as poor, as depressing a markup, at the retail end, as bowling balls. If this guy is so irritated, let him finance a pro shop and stop his pitiful whining. Let's see what he says then!

I rarely take people to task for such verbiage, but even now, like Brickguy, I have had my full of this crap. I have a close friend who runs a Pro shop and what he has to go through, has had to go through to survive in this business is a dirty shame. I can easily believe that between teaching kids in school and the pro shop, you barely make ends meet, can barely feed, house and clothe a family.

Hamster's posts regarding running a pro shop, as sad as his tales have been, is barely half the story.

Aw, what's the use?

King,

I don't think he was bashing....he's right. Such posts do not really warrant a reply but I felt obligated so he could not cop the attitude like..."see, I put iot out there and nobody had the guts to reply"...so I replied :-)

CharlesT is right...profit margins are low and especially when (like me) you need to drive 30 minutes to get to the shop after driving 35 minutes to get home from my regular job, it is rough but I do it because I like to help people. I teach to help our future (let's face it...today's teens and pre-teens are the ones that will be taking care of me in 30 years when I retire and end up on Social Security etc) and I run a pro shop to help the bowlers. Ther eis an ulterior motive...I also run the shop to justify my purchase and use of the new toys on the market but it is also so my wife does not have to get a 5 day per week job. She doesn't need the stress of having to work full time plus taking care of the majority of the house.  As I have stated my shop had it's best year ever last year...I actually made money!! Yes...a whopping $135.50 worth!!! WAHOO!!!!! If I had thought about it and leased my vehicle as a company car to get back and forth to work and logged the miles back and forth to UPS and WalMart/NAPA/Staples to ship packages and pick up supplies, that would not have been a profit.

So yeah....ct is right...no reply was needed but I felt compelled to do so to avoid the post being an ego booster on nine out's part :-)
