How can I tweak the surfaces of either of these balls....
« on: January 21, 2004, 10:58:58 PM »
I have a GN drilled 1:30 label and a BCB drilled stacked pin up and right of ring, cg of course stacked below.  I just joined a leauge at this house that has pretty dry backends and doesn't lay out a lot of oil in general. (32 foot pattern, not a HARD shot) I would like to use one of these balls but when I play there they both burn up when I rev it too much.  It just makes a strong first step to the pocket and then REALLY pretty much rolls out. If this is not burning out just tell me, but I get the impression that the coverstock is just not matching up to the conditions...

Both balls are in factory condition.  What can I tell my pro shop operator to do in terms of resurfacing, since I won't be doing it myself?  I don't want to buy another ball.  I made a new years resolution not to, but I can mess with what I got.  I also throw an old polished freak out there, and that works, but I have stronger equipment and I would like to be able to use one of them on these conditions.  It is of course not dire, I just have this expensive equipment that I want to be able to use.  Thanks a lot.

I think the GN is intended for med/heavy oil, so I wouldn't mess with it too much.  The BB is supposed to be very tweakable.  Sand it finer (1000-1500) and add your favorite polish.  I like the Storm polishes because they have the grit values listed on the bottle.

I agree with Strider (This is getting monotonous; maybe I should go to some other website and let him "play" here.).
The BCB's cover is much easier and safer to tweak.
Touch the GN's and it may never be the same again.

So what polishes have you found to be good...I'm new to tweaking coverstocks, so this is all fresh material to me...

Sand it to 1000, polish it up, what grit?

Storm's Xtra shine is a good generic polish.
I hope you have a spinner. (If you did, I guess you wouldn't be asking this question.) If not, take it to your pro shop and ask him to put a LIGHT coat of polish on it. Make sure you specify LIGHT, as too many pro shops tend to dismiss many people's request and put a high gloss polish on every ball.

Why do you sand the surface of the ball then apply a polish?

Damn 10 pin!!

- To change the friction coefficient of the surface. Sandpaper is a constant; polish with grit in it (99% of all polishes change the surface) is a HUGE variable. The amount that the polish changes the grit is not measurable; you vary it to get the shine (reflective index) desired, dependent on the actual liquid, the  amount of the liquid, the dampness of the applicator, the pressure applied and the amount of time on the spinner.

Also if this is particle lane #1 equipment,
MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING TRIZACT!!!!!!!

Brunswick recommends it for all their particle
equipment.

To not use it would not help your balls. IMO

I continue to find it efficacious to use Trizact on Bwick covers, even if Brunswick internal politics seems to currently dictate otherwise.

However, no one has yet queried and publicized what Lane#1 has said is the coverstock's finishing process for the Golden Nugget. Therefore I'd advise caution when modifying the cover, for one may then find it very difficult to return it to stock box condition.

The only "problem" is your ball will tend to grip the lane sooner and have a smoother overall break point
