Dirty Bomb,Have I done the right thing ?
« on: November 26, 2004, 04:59:41 AM »
I bought a Dirty Bomb on Ebay a few weeks ago so when it got here a couple of weeks later ( I'm over in the UK ) I was naturally exited about getting it drilled up. So I went to my proshop as soon as I could but when I pulled it out of my bag to show him he was not to happy that I had gone elsewhere for the ball and said "You only get one ball drilled up , We are a proshop that sells balls not just somewhere to get your balls drilled ". This sort of threw me a bit but he was going to drill it up and that was the main thing. So he put the ball on the counter and asked me how I wanted it drilled at which point I thought we would have the normal how do you want it to react how long do you want it to go sort of chat but he said " No, you brought the ball in here you tell me how to drill it." If you look at my profile you will see I have not been bowling long so this threw me even more and all I could do was look at the drill sheet for advice. So looking at the scores Lane # 1 give for midlane and backend I chose stacked which gave a midlane of 5 and a backend of 9 because I play straight over second arrow and in to the pocket (hopefully).
So what I want to know is firstly have I picked the right drilling for me (read my profile) and secondly is it a common thing with proshop guys to get a bit p'd if you bring them a ball to drill.

PS. Sorry it's a bit long

Any good pro shop operator should give you the same advice whether you buy the ball from him or online. He would obviously have the right to charge more to drill it to make up for lost sales, but to be treated like an outsider is uncalled for. I, personally, would take my business elsewhere.

Normally I get on fine with this guy so that's why I was even more supprised by his attitude. As for taking my custom somewhere else proshops in England are very few and far between. I play on a normal house shot when I bowl (Don't think their is anything else over here) and the ball is a Christmas present from my wife who wrapped it up as soon as I got it back from the shop. So I guess I'll just have to wait till after Christmas to see how it reacts.

Also he has put quite a deep (2.5"-3") weight hole on my PAP will that tame the stacked drilling a bit ?

I would have taken the ball somewhere else to be drilled and told the Pro Shop Operator I would not be back + a few other choice words. I refuse to pay someone my hard earned money who will not give me 100% of their attention and effort. I mean, WTH, I'm paying them for the service of drilling the ball, you can buy a ball anywhere it's the service that you pay for. if he doesn't like the fact he's not making money on the ball as well as the drilling he should follow the lead of some around here, charge more for drilling of a ball not purchased at the shop.

That being said, I'm sure you're gonna love this ball.

Tough question, and one that's been debated endlessly on this forum.

However, in general, it's a higher value proposition to buy and drill through your proshop for the following reasons:

1) When everything is taken into consideration, the price difference is usually minimal.
2) If something goes wrong (crack during drilling, bad CG marking, etc.) your proshop will take ownership.
3) Building a loyal relationship will get you deals in the long run that you would not otherwise have available.

The proshop guy was a little abrupt with you, but if he's the best you have available, use him for all services in the future.

Sounds to me like your guy just has a bit of an attitude problem.  I frequent the same proshop guy here in my area and I hardly ever buy a ball from him because I throw only buzzsaws and although he can get them i usually find them cheaper.  Now this being said he treats me just the same if I buy 1 ball a year from him directly or 10.  Now understand I am good friends with him and have been for a few years.  You have to find a driller you can get to know and have a mutually beneficial relationship with.  You can pay him well for drilling something you bring in NIB and he shouldn't get an attitude with you.  Now with all this I do by a ball or two a year from my driller and one time I bought five from him at one time(when I was not using lane#1).  He understands though that I can just get better deals online and he doesn't mind and doesn't charge me any extra to drill the stuff I carry in.  It takes some but the perfect driller for you can be found I went through 3 or 4 until I met the current one I use and I was introduced to him through a mutual friend.

I should just quit bowling, oh wait I already tried that.
Now that I am back and my Saws are sharp again, I am ready to cut some wood.
