I am left wondering how you guys drilled your HRG, and how you throw it. Mine is drilled pin under ring (4" from PAP), with the CG out 60 degrees so I could add a weight hole 2" down the VAL. Surface is currently scuffed (green Scotchbrite). I do not have a ton of hand (don't know exact rev rate, but I would qualify as a stroker/ power stroker).
On a light-medium THS, I was able to play the HRG just about anywhere on the lane in OOB finish. Up the back release for a down and in shot, and a cupped hand for swinging across the oil.
On a heavier THS, OOB finish was not enough for me to swing through the middle, but I could play it just fine going straight up the boards. I decided to scuff the surface with green Scotchbrite to get the ball to start up a bit sooner. Worked like a charm. The ball is much smoother at the breakpoint and that makes it more predictable. Don't be afraid to play with the surface on this ball. I know others have found the HRG to respond very well to a surface change (some use scotchbrite, some use 1000 grit paper).
I am not saying you can expect to hook the ball coast to coast on a flood, but on most THS shots, there is some dry at the backends and usually to the outside. If this is the case at your house, you should be able to find a line with the HRG.
