Crystal Diamond --- Cracking Question
« on: March 19, 2007, 12:21:51 PM »
I traded for a NIB Crystal Diamond earlier this year and I've been using it for the last 2 months or so. I noticed a couple days ago that it's developing a small crack above the fingers. Will this become a problem? This ball is barely 2 months, maybe 3 at most old.

Will the crack get worse?

Hmmm..  Don't think I've seen anyone with this issue before..  Mine doesn't even have a game on it yet so mine still looks new..

I own the LaneHawk Clear Marble and the plastic is second-rate. It chips a lot from gutter contact.

My old teammate has owned a clear diamond since it came out. Rest assured, it is still in great shape. It takes abuse, too. It is no bag queen.

It depends on what the crack on your ball is doing and how it got there. If it is attached to the bridge, chances are the fingers were drilled close. If you use fingertips, that makes the bridge even weaker compared to a ball with no inserts.

A random crack above the bridge, not running to any hole? That is pure randomness I would think. Maybe it pressure dinged or chipped from some gutter contact.

Mine is still in good shape (aside from developing a track from lots of use)!
I will wait until the end of the season to polish it up.

I saw a lot of clear balls crack around here...

Well one thing for sure is the drilling process and the glue.

Superglue can damage the plastic (seen on other plastic balls) and the clear plastic is - from what I read and know - a bit harder and tends to crack easier.

A friends ROTOGRIP "Spare Tire" even cracked from the inside! Meaning the crack developed not on the surface but from the inside of the ball out to the fingerhole... never have seen anything similar..

The Clear Diamond sure is a neat piece of bowling "WOW" but imho I wouldn't dare to drill it... it is a ball to buy.. put into the cupboard... and look at it...

My XXXL also starts to crack around the ringfinger like your CCD (crystal clear diamond) it was hit by something sharp in the edge and cracked it was... plastic.

A possible solution would be to have the hole redrilled.. filled with clear filler.

Anyway keep and eye on it...

From what I've seen, clear balls made in Korea or China tend to be pretty brittle.

I will keep an eye on it. If it gets worse, I'll talk to my proshop guy about it. I just hope it doesn't.

Is this the type of crack where I could get a replacement if it does get worse and bigger?

My crystal diamond is cracking around the thumb and fingers.  But i expect it using grips and slugs.  Nothing a little more glue won't fix

FWIW
my ebonite gemstone had its fingerholes start to crumble out.  Made in the usa.

since i havent used it for a while i took the grips out to use in another.

soccerball shows absolutely no cracking.
