Early Anthony vs. WRW...
« on: November 27, 2003, 09:30:47 PM »
Yeah, I know this is the wrong place to post this but I want ya'lls opinion on this one. In my opinion, everthing being equal in comparing them if they were in there primes, even with the new equipment, Earl Anthony would crush WRW...period! Now, I'm NOT trying to start a WRW bashing or anything, but for one I get kinda tired of seeing him on tv, but in some ways I want him to get Earl's record too. Go fig.

So what do you think? Earl "Mr. Consistent" Anthony or Walter Ray "DeadEye" Williams? (Note: Didn't they bowl against each other at one time?)

When you've moved up, moved back, adjusted left and right, cupped, flattened out, have thrown everyting in your arsenal, and the pins still don't cooperate, just say, "Aw to HELL with it!", and throw the ball!

Earl Anthony and WRW bowled an exhibtion match against each other several years ago in OKC after Earl had quit bowling on the regular PBA Tour. FYI, Earl beat WRW with no trouble at all.

Earl was Lefty.  'Nuff said.

Just kidding.  Watch WRW bowl and then watch Earl.  Their heads NEVER MOVE until they release the ball.  And they may be the only two ever who's don't AT ALL.

Mark Roth also had a relatively short competitive bowling career.  He bowled full time for about, what, 10 years?  Brought Earl out of retirement, so I heard.  Whereas WRW and Earl have smooth, accurate, textbook "this is how you bowl" styles, Mark Roth's could be described as "Grip it 'n' Rip it!"  And in no way, shape, or form would I EVER tell someone, "Watch Mark Roth bowl and bowl like him."  However during his dominant period, was was just as if not moreso than Earl during his.

10pin2002,

If you can get hold of some old Mark ROth tapes or even some current ones, you will neve rbelieve just how accurate he is and was. After so many people saying that because he was the first of the mega-crankers, he sprayed the ball all over the place. Nothing could be further from the truth; I watched him very carefully and he was very accurate. In fact, it was his deadly accurate spare shooting that won him most of his titles.

The absolutley only simile I will draw with golf:
"Drive for show, but putt for dough" is equivalent to bowling's
"Strike for show, but spare for dough!"

charlest,

I will COMPLETELY agree that Roth's spare shooting was probably better than any of his comtemporaries.  I was just referring to his actual approach and release.
