Struggling Red Death
« on: January 15, 2010, 01:40:40 AM »
So iv'e bowled with my red death for about a month now and have been having some problems with it since the first cpl shifts.  From what i understand this should be a pretty aggressive ball and it is but i have absolutly no recovery on it.  It seems like i am leaving at least 4-5 washouts a night.  Of course i'm being stubborn and not making a ball change until its too late, but just can't figure out why i can pull out a 4 year old Black widow and walk up to the pocket so much better than my Brand new Red Death.  The only variable that i can see different between the RD and all of the rest of my balls is that the rest are all high flare balls, and the Red Death is only a 4.  Is this somthing that could affect this that i need to get used to a lil diff ball?  I have it layed out pin between the fingers and kicked out 45 deg.  I'm a med speed med rev player, does anyone have any ideas of what is wron or any suggestions to try thanx a bunch.

To answer Psycho's question.  There should never be any reason to move.  If one ball isn't working I should be be able to change balls and it'll strike.  Same goes with drilling new bowling balls. It should strike from the same spot as everything else.  I mean that's at least the conclusion I've drawn from all these House Shot Hereos on this lovely site, when it comes to "this ball isn't working."

First off, the surface of the ball is well down on the list of things that change ball reaction in the Bible of Lane 1. Secondly you should have ask T-God what the ending static weights should be in order get the desired reaction. Thirdly Stopncrank seems to know everything in every other thread on BR so just pm him.

hey stroker, cgsuksharryballsagna, and all the other 10 of your screenames...hell they would get a better answer pm'ing anybody, hard to get a straight answer for anybody in the Lane 1 forum...too bad you dont have cajones enough to do it in another forum...champ

Man, truer words were never spoken.  So many bowlers today couldn't adjust hand position, axis tilt, speed, etc. if their life depended on it.  No matter what ball brand they use.

Why move out of your comfort zone if you have the arsenal to stay right where you like throwing best?  What's the point in owning all these damn balls!

On a serious note, not a Lane 1 bash, as I haven't had a chance to throw one yet.  Based on these responses, am I to assume that the Red Death is a stronger ball than the Original Black Widow?  I know 2000 to 4000 is a large difference in ball reaction, but I'm just curious, as I've been looking for a Red Death to try out.

I made a fortune back in the pancake urethane days..I'd be more than happy to go back to those days when the skill was in the bowler, not the ball!!

You contradicted yourself pretty good there.

Not really.
Some people own multiple balls to play multiple lines.
Some people own multiple balls to play a single line.

Either way, the goal is having an arsenal that allows you to adapt to the conditions.  Whether that condition is a single line that keeps drying out, or multiple lines in different sections of the lane.  The end result is the same, just 2 separate ways of achieving it.

I come from a different world. The goal for me is to adjust hand, speed, axis, etc. You know, actually bowl.

After trying multiple surfaces from box to 4000, I think I'm going to settle on 800-grit using Valentino Resurrection, and use the ball for tighter inside lines on heavier patterns. The ball is versatile with 4000, but it just doesn't read the oil as consistently as I'd like.

And how have your release adjustments worked for you throwing the Red Death? There has been a lot of discussion here about NIB surface vs. taking the cover up to 4000 abralon. Have you tried any of those to optimize reaction?

Having an arsenal for different reactions, doesn't magically mean you don't have to know when to change balls.  You don't get to stop paying attention to how your ball rolls or where it leaves the deck.  You aren't magically allowed to miss your mark, or throw a bad ball.  Accuracy, repetition and delivery don't disappear simply because you know to use a weaker drilling as an oil pattern breaks down.
