Dynamo at 4000 Ablaron
« on: March 12, 2009, 08:50:09 AM »
I took the Dynamo down to 4000 Ablaron on a spinner with a little water and some ball cleaner.  The ball looked almost polished if not polished. The ball pushed very well through the oil and had a very strong back end reaction.  Totally different ball then at 1000 Abalron as it should be. With clean/fresh backends the ball was very consistant but extremely angular off the break point.  Once we got a little carry down the ball got a little squirrely.  If I wasn't bowling league I would have worked going around the carry down.  I just changed balls to my Agent Orange and finished the set.  Right before the second set I took the Dynamo down to 2000 Ablaron by hand and threw some shots with it before the next set started.  The ball looked like it would work extremely well at 2000. I put it away because it would have been illegal to throw the ball in competition after I took the ball down to 2000.  So I'll try it at 2000 tomorrow.

Barry,

This is for you and others who may read it, but it's no criticism.

That 4000 Abrlaon pad was probably worn beyond its usability point. Unless you use it to apply polish, the result of using a 4000 Abralon pad will not look polished UNLESS the abrasive has been worn to a higher grit level than 4000 FEPA grit. It always has  "dullness" or matte appearance. So the ball reaction was probably slight flippier and slightly more susceptible to carrydown than a true 4000 grit Abralon finish. I have seen this  more than a fewtimes. When I see a shine from a 4000 Abralon pad, I know I used it beyond its expected life. Time for a fresh one and to re-do the ball.

Jeff,

I have a whole box of 4000 ablaron pads and I used a fresh brand new pad.

I used a fresh Ablaron pad, a little water on the pad to start and then added some Power House Energizer Ball cleaner at high speed.  If I did it by hand I would have had the matte finish.  I used a fresh pad just to make sure I put a 4000 on it.  Maybe the Energizer cleaner and the Ablaron pad at high speed gave it the polish looking appearance.

he applied polish thats why it looks that way. A true 4000 abralon pad will look matte (dull), unless you put it on there for a long time, then it will look glassy.

He applied ball cleaner,  not polish.

I'm under the impression that Power House Energizer Ball Cleaner has no polishes in it.  I could be wrong.

I have been told in the past that I should/could get away with polish on a lot of my equipment (solids, but not all)  if I used a 4000 Ablaron pad with a little bit of water on a spinner at high speed.  Can't get that look by hand unless your really good.  But by hand I can easily see the matte finish.

That could be the case. Many people in the past year or so have reported seeing a shine or glaze when applying cleaners on the spinner. I have personally begun recommending people NOT do that.

As far as I am concerned, a 4000 grit Abralon pad should never, under any circumstances, result in a shined ball or any glazing at all. It should be obvious that it is a true matte finish.

No, it will not. I stand by that statement.

I read the label on the Power Energizer ball cleaner and it says nothing about polish.  It just cleans the ball.  Not understand the light shine with it and a new 4000 Ablaron pad.

Neither do I. I've seen it first hand when I read people complaining about it. I saw it with both Track's/Powerhouse's Power Wash and Brunswick's Remove-all.

I believe this is also the reason that micro-fiber towels are prohibited or will be prohibited soon in the PBA and the USBC: if you use enough pressure, a micro-fiber towel and water will polish a all!

Jeff,

I thought that about the water.  Thats why I even use the water.  It both dilutes the cleaner and cleans the ball very well while cleaning the ball with an Ablaron pad.

Thanks,

yes, the powerhouse cleaner will polish a ball, my proshop has polished several balls by doing this and it seems to work nicely at my house...

Don't disagree Strikealot, but is there polish in the Power House Energy cleaner?
