The Big Curve
« on: March 26, 2010, 04:16:17 PM »
I have had the opportunity to throw my Big Curve for a few games now so I can give some initial feedback on it''s performance.

For bowler stats and lane conditions see my profile.

Ball specs:
Pre-Drilling................Post Drilling
15# 3 oz.........GW......14# 14-1/2 oz
3.0 oz..............TW......5/8 oz.
Pin...3-4".........SW......5/8 oz.
........................FW......3/8 oz.

Layout....60 x 5 x 60, weighthole 3/4 x 2" on the VAL, 2" below PAP

Surface....box finish

Well, as others have said, the ball lives up to it''s name. The ball reaction is just that...a big curve to the pocket. Yes the ball is perhaps lacking in aesthetic appeal to some but the performance makes up for it.

This layout is very similar to the layout I have on my Mission (angles are the same but the pin to PAP is 4" on the Mission). What I see in comparison is the same strong midlane read as the Mission but a hair sooner. I am attributing this to the solid vs pearl coverstock difference.

I am also seeing the Big Curve''s breakpoint 2-3 feet earlier than the Mission, again presumably due to the coverstock.

I tried the ball in our Thursday night 5 man league. The first 2 games out of the box were 205 and 225. I put it away for game 3 since the ball was just going way too early by then. I ran out of approach and was not comfortable playing so deep with such a tight breakpoint trying to keep the ball in the oil.

I again tried the ball in my Friday night mixed league. Games 1 and 2 were 222 and 207 thanks to my crappy spare shooting. The Big Curve watched from the bag for game 3 again in favor of my original Curve.

The Big Curve looks very promising and should be a great addition to Lane 1''s line up. Personally I would have preferred a nice dark purple swirled into the white or even a green/ white swirl. Looks aside the ball has a strong midlane like the Lane 1''s of the past. The breakpoint is smooth and the backend strong and continuous.

I will post more as I throw the ball some more.

I'd like to know where you bowl..

I have three houses in my area that this ball would roll out in less than 10ft due to lack of oil..

I think you know where I bowl.....

Anyway, I did say the ball needs fresh. I tested it out on a freshly oiled pair to get a true feel the Big Curve capability. There is no question the ball with NIB finish would roll out on second (and even later first shift) conditions.

I don't expect to use it on THS conditions often (if at all). It will mostly be for sport/PBA conditions where I need to get deeper than I'm normally comfortable playing. I'm looking forward to trying it out on the double oiled Nationals condition we're currently playing.
