Lane #1 - NUMBER ONE

Hello everyone.
Well I'm here again. Just bought a brand new Black Cherry
Bomb. Specs : Gross weight - 16lb, 3 oz toweight, 2-3" pin.
Drilled stacked. Played 4 games with this beauty. First,
not carrying the 10th pin. Have my driller drilled a balance
hole and it solved the problem. With out of box finish
(polished) it skids to long on oily lanes. Had it scuffed
with a green scotch-brite pad, and now it has a nice arcing
rolling into the pocket. This ball suits my game so much and makes me
feel to abandon my other balls from Storm and Brunswick. I agree with
you Lane #1 fans, when you claimed that Lane #1 is always the BEST!!

Bowlingmsy, I once was in your shoes and had the same feelings about Lane 1, but not any more. After buying 5 different Lane 1 balls the past 10 months or so and ending up with only one great Lane 1 ball (Uranium) and a half "A" fair ball, (Emerald), and to have a 2 1/2 year old V2 Pearl run circles around the Emerald, I quit wearing those shoes and now once again wear all brands.

Hello again,
Although I've said that Lane #1 balls are great and going
to abandon my other balls from Storm and Brunswick, I do
not find the necessity to do so. I have great games with
Storm, Ebonite and Brunswick equipment, but did quite badly
with Columbia 300 equipment. It seems that I am never be able
to suit my game with Columbia equipment. I did rather keep
a diversified arsenal because of the different
characteristics of each ball. I'm open to all brands as long as
I could suit it with my style of bowling. I will like Lane #1
equipment as much as I do to my Storm and Brunswick equipment.

For me, having bad games with any ball is a norm!!!
I got good scores with my Triple X-factor one night. Two days later
I'm having a very bad game which I consider a trash, using the
very same ball!!! The problem, is my own self, not the ball. Lane #1, Storm
etc produces good balls. To me it is the bowler, is playing the good games.
Bowling balls do not perform magics for me !!!

See guys there are many of us who like to stick to one brand and only one brand. That is the reason why I stick to Lane 1. I am not a big fan of all of the new cores and such so Lane 1 suits me fine.

I like to be able to switch balls in the middle of a frame if need be and know exactly what the next one is going to do. Lane 1 stuff allows me to do this. Now I know I can do the same if I stuck to a line such as the Vortex line or the Throttle line but the Lane 1 stuff has worked best for me overall so I stick with them. I had the full compluiment of Erasers when Storm had the Eraser, Erase It, Boost and Blaze and it worked well but I never could get the across the board reaction I was looking for.

I like simple and Lane 1 allows me to keep things simple. To me that in and of itself is worth the extra few $$$$$ they cost me. So please guys no hate mail regarding this...just explaining my outlook on it. I am sure a complete arsenal could be built around another line but i think it would be pretty tough.

I may be having 4 games only with the Black Cherry Bomb, but
my first trial and impression is very important to me to keep on
using this ball. It happens to me again and again, when I try a
new ball from a particular brand. It's just like you are attending
an Ebonite demo day, for example. You can try different balls
on that day and at the end of the day, conclude that a particular
ball will suit your style of bowling. For me I do not have that chance,
as I lived in the far east (the other side of the world), unlike you
guys in US. If I were to try a new ball, I must buy it. If I liked it,
I'll keep it or else sell it off. My first impression of this Black Cherry
Bomb is, I LOVED IT!! It will become part of my main arsenal. Bowling
is an expensive sport to me, but I'm willing to spare some money just to find
the best bowling equipment for my style of bowling.

Great post Doug - nice job pointing out both the plus and minus of building an arsenal from one manufacturer.  Like you, I've had a hard time finding a single line that covers enough boards.  The other problem is finding a line that, while it might cover enough boards, doesn't have huge gaps between certain models.  The only line I've had the opportunity to try and found relatively close to my standards is the V2 line.

Wish I had the $$$ to attempt building an arsenal of Lane 1 stuff.  Maybe after my first book reaches the top seller list...

I agree wholeheartedly with friedheads...confidence in a ball or manufacturer is paramount in the success you will have with it.

Someone else had a post while back on ball color affecting your opinion of the ball. I agree on this too. I have a tendency to throw green and blue balls VERY well. Do I choose based on color? No but I am telling you my favorites have been those colors....

Jade Piranha/C, Emerald Buzzsaw, Ebonite Wipeout Sparkle, JackHammer, Blue Hammer, Navy Resin Hammer, Trauma, Uranium Buzzsaw...Loved them all. There are others I liked but green and blue seem to always work well for me.

In short individual differences and opinions are why there are 13 different ball companies (number taken out of the air, no corrections needed please) and each makes 25 different balls.

Whenever I have a customer come in the shop and say they want a new ball I always ask what they are using now...if they want to replace it with a similar ball, there are some companies that make that choice rather easy because of their usage of core and cover combinations. If they want to update and get more or less hook, there are some other companies that help that as well. Then there are the companies that put out completely different stuff each time so you have no clue how they will compare to the old offerings.

I have my bases covered with lane 1...
Super Bomb for heavy, Nugget for medium heavy with minor carrydown, 3x4 Uranium for heavier medium, 5-1/2 x 3-1/2 Uranium for most lanes, 2x4 Emerald for screaming backends and a Krypt Keeper for spares. I also have a Cranberry and a Black Raspberry sitting here if I go somewhere that I might need earlier roll I'll throw one of them in place of the 3x4 Uranium.

My buddy has his leagues covered with his Hammer Blades...

Pearl for light, Sling for most mediums, solid for heavier side of medium, Sharp for when the solid isnt enough, Particle for heavier and Clear Hammer for spares.

SO it can be done...do I need 6? no but I stay comfortable and confident when I am in a certain area of the lane. I could play deep or play the outside if I had to but if I have a ball that will allow me to play in my comfort zone, why not?
