Surface Questions.... Calling Doug Sterner!!!
« on: July 29, 2004, 10:31:23 PM »
I recently got back 3 of my lane 1s that i got redrilled by my new driller. The fit is great! But, I am unsure about the surface adjustments he made. He took my cherry too a 600 dull and said I could use it for medium/heavy. Then took my nugget to 600 shiny and said I could use it on medium. Then with my Uranium it should show up today but it will be shiner than nugget.

Does any of this make sense? I am beginning to have doubts... LMK. Thanks in advance.

I can see your driller's plan, but the only sensible thing to do is decide for yourself.  Try them the way he sets them up first, and if they don't perform the way you want on the condition you want to use them on, tweak the surface yourself; or have him do it if you don't have the polishes, pads, spinner etc.

He didn't change the layouts... But, i can tell you how they are drilled...

Cherry- Pin right and a little above of ring. Cg is almsot stacked but not sure.

Nugget-Pin right of ring. CG almost stacked.

When i say almsot stacked its not directly under slightly inside.

Uranium- I dont have it with me but I know its similar to Nugget.

Uranium has small balance hole and Cheryr has a good seize balance hole. Hope this helps.

It sounds like they are all pretty close to the same drilling based on the information that you said.  Depends of course on how far right the pin is on each one.

I also have all 3.  Well i had all 3 but didn't like the cherry way too much over under.  My uranium is drilled label leverage, g nug is drilled cg leverage, and the cherry bomb i had was drilled  3 3/8 stacked.  All way different reactions.

With surfaces... What conditions should the nugget and cherry work on?

I have never seen a cherry bomb pearl dull.  Probably because they made the black cherry bomb but from what I can tell based on your description it would be able to handle medium-heavy but probably not heavy oil.  The g nug would be a good medium ball as well as the uranium but will/should give you 2 different backend reactions---uranium skid snap whereas the g nug will do skid arc.  Hope this helps

I've had both balls. The Uranium with a label drill or even stacked drill sanded to 400 and polished to 1500-2000 is excellent for me on medium oil. The Gold Nugget sanded to 400 and polished to 2000 was good for me on medium to a wee bit oiler than medium oil with carry down. The Uranium doesn't handle much carry down. The Gold Nugget will handle more carry down than the Uranium. I don't see that much carry down where I bowl, so that is why I sold the GN. The Cherry Bomb sanded to 400-600 with a 3000 grit shine should work on light to medium light oil. The Black Cherry Bomb sanded to 600-800 and no polish should handle medium/heavy depending how much hand you have. If you don't have the Black Cherry Bomb, then I would try sanding the GN to 1500 and no polish and try it on medium/heavy. If you don't have the Cherry Bomb, then I would sand the Uranium to 600-800 and shine to to 2000-2500 and use it on light to medium/light oil. Sand GN to 400 and shine to 2000 for medium. Sand the Black Cherry Bomb as already described to 600-800 with no polish for medium/heavy oil. Depending on how much hand you have, you would have to adjust slightly.

Doug Sterner is really the person to talk to about this rather myself or the others on this site as Doug sort of excells at this type of thing.
