My local proshop has the Brunswick Torsion core found in the new Fury mounted on a trophy stand. No matter how you slice it or dice it, this is a diamond based core (at least visually). And seeing the Fury in action on the lanes, it certainly rolls like a ball with a diamond based core. I don't bring this up to start an endless debate over Lane#1 patents or what a diamond core "is or isn't". Just stating an observation having seen the core up close, and the Fury itself being thrown over several games.
And then I ran across this on the web from the following link:
http://www.bowlingballsandmore.com/news.asp
quote:
A Lane #1 ball by any other name is still a Lane #1 ball.
According to a reliable source, Brunswick's upcoming release of the "Fury" bowling ball, just may be the sleeper of the season. The weight block in this ball was designed by Richie S. over at Lane #1 when Brunswick was making their coverstocks. Richie had wanted Brunswick to make the ball for Lane #1, but was told that it was too expensive to make.
More out of curiosity than anything else, if this is true, why would Richie turn over a successful design to Brunswick? I just doesn't make any sense unless he was paid a lot of money for the design work.

Torsion core...
And I started a post about this already

How many lane 1 buyers are willing to buy a fury?
-
jhutch769: Thanks for pointing out my "Fusion" error. Don't know why I had "Fusion" on the brain. Regardless, it's corrected. As far as you already starting this thread, I don't want to get into lawsuits. I'm more interested in if this is a Richie design acquired by Brunswick vs. an original Brunswick R&D based design.
Skeglesswonder: I'd consider buying a Fury after seeing it thrown. However, first, I want to do more research into how much overlap their is with the G-Force.

Christ, you people act like Lane 1 has invented the Diamond shape since the beginning of time.

I personally don't care who designed it.. but I've seen the core.. and it doesn't look like a diamond core... it has the VERY VERY general shape.. but that's about it.
If it doesn't resemble a twisted diamond to you, that's your opinion. But alot of people do see it as a diamond derivitive. In my opinion (and it's just an opinion), it looks more like a diamond than some of bomb mutations that came out over the past year or two..
quote:
Secondly, you can't look at a ball going down the lane and be like.. yeah that's a diamond core.. that's total bs. I did find humor in that statement though.
Maybe you can't, but bowlers who throw a lot of Lane#1 can. I feel I could pick out a Uranium out from a number of unmarked balls. Even some Brunswick guys can. The guy who I watched throwing the Fury, a friend who competes well in the West regionals, commented to me that it was "too Lane#1" for his taste. Too much midlane roll, not enough backend for what he's looking for. It did look like a Uranium for heavier oil.
But I'm glad you're humored.
quote:
And the article.. probably a way to stir up a rumor.. what do you expect from any news source? Have you ever watched CNN.. they make so much crap up it's unbelieveable.
I don't know if the article is true or not. But it's interesting that the twisted Torsion came along about the same time as the Lane#1 twisted diamond.
quote:
If Lane #1 made the core.. great.. if Bruns made the core.. great. If my grandfather made the core.. great! Who truly cares! It's a core that's going to work and work well.. so as long as it strike and kicks the ten.. no one is going to care.
If you don't care, that's fine, but why respond? I didn't ask for the opinions of those who "don't care". I though it would be interesting to know what role (if any) Richie played in the design of the Torsion. At least one article is suggesting he had a hand.

Well, I rarely believe anything from a "reliable source". If they are so reliable, say your name.
Next, Ritchie, above all else, knows marketing, sales and business in general. If he thought it was a good design, he wouldn't let it go.
Also, if the core was too expensive to make, why would Brunswick buy it? Out of the goodness of their hearts? Don't think so, they are publicly traded, the only goodness they have is what the BoD tells them.
Finally,
Diamond Core = 4 sides, pointed top and bottom
Torsion = 3 sides, rounded top and bottom
It's a stretch by anyone's imagination.

Actually the basis geometry of a Diamond is a octagon... 8 Sides...
Imho the Torsion core is not a Diamond in any way... similar mayby but not any nearer it.

Back at you as there are only so many things you can do with a Diamond and then it becomes a repeat just like any shape so Lane #1 will evntually run out of ideas for the diamond and move on to another core shape!

Look, I didn't start this thread to accuse Brunswick of anything. I asked from the start not to get into legalities and other such nonsense. I'm assuming that Brunswick is within legal bounds with whatever they're doing.
I simply referenced an article that reported Richie's involvement with the Torsion core as 'news'. I hadn't seen that before and wondered if there was any credibility to the reporting. So far, no one has added anything one way or the other.
As for those who run away from the notion that the Torsion is a derivitive of the Lane#1 diamond, I'd offer that if the Torsion came out in a Lane#1 ball instead of the Fury, few would be screaming that Lane#1 had abandoned their roots and went to a new design philosophy.
Conspiritor, as for the following:
quote:
I dunno if you have really seen the Fury thrown.. but it has more backend than any other solid I have ever seen...
I don't know why you question this. I was watching Billy Machin, ranked 10th in the PBA West Region, throw the Fury for several games. 'Bruns*sigh*Nick' would like to throw the ball like Billy when he grows up
Billy has never been accused of not having hand. Anyway, lots of total hook, but nothing close to skid/snap. Again, it reacted very much like an aggressive solid Uranium.

Stupidity at it's finest people...
I'm real curious to know what you average? Have you ever bowled any tournaments, what do you average on tougher conditions?
There's nothing magic about these cores, they make good equipment, I liked all of my Lane1 stuff, but the absolute nonsense from posters like GTX here are the reason i'll never consider Lane1 again.
Anyway back on topic, if you compare the core shapes in like a 2d picture or even a silhouette, they are similar but as soon as you get into a 3d model they lose all similarities. But of course that's just my opinion.

Interesting.
Lefty, it's sad to think that someone's participation on the BR forum would keep you from using something you like. Especially if you liked all of it (as stated).
Let it be known that I do not base my bowling equipment decisions on the musings of ANYBODY on an internet forum. If it works for me, I'm going to purchase it and use it.
As for the topic at hand, I am not suprised at all to hear that (even a remotely) similar shaped core in a Brunswick ball reacts like a Bruns-covered Lane #1 ball. Sounds like a "no-brainer" to me. And why would Brunswick not do something similar if they thought the results would be positive? If that's what people want, why not give it to them? Car companies do it all the time. They take a successful design element from another car and apply it to theirs, only changing it just enough to sidestep patent infringement issues. It's no big deal.

why you guys care ... I must missed where I have to validate my opinion via lane#1 bashers .. bleh
do I care what you think, NO .. all you do is come here and talk trash like you know it all
even if Lane#1 owner comes here and post, you will still post trash ..
why do I even bother with members like you
league avg and tournaments !! lol ... I will down-level to yours to answer it
I have 210+ avg on condition that is tougher than your "easy" US condition .. and the tourneys I won .. your 2 hands are not enough to count them
hmmmm "No magic, but good consistency" .. so good consistency is not magic .. good to know how some "think"

The only word that I can think of,is "Absurd", the way this topic has been discussed. After reading the initial post I went to Lane1's site and check the shape of the cores, then I checked the shape of the Brunswick Fury's core. I don't see any similarities, so for me, the issue is just BS.
-
Dynoboy: So you went to a few websites and looked at pictures. And based on that, you pronounce all the conversation here 'bs'.
How illuminating.
What Lane#1 cores did you look at? Funny you didn't give any information here anyone could use. Have you actually seen a real Torsion core outside of a ball? Doubtful.
Before you label anything 'bs', do your homework.

This is very true about the core of the new Fury. Brunswick did say that they were going to charge a more amount of money to have the balls made. This is when they basically decided to make the core for themselves, because Richie wasn't going to have it made because they up'd the price of the balls being made on him. This in turn would have made the price of the balls go up some more.

don't waste your time ... you to realize how hard it is for them now .. more than ever lol
I mean .. all these years talking sh1t about lane#1 and it core .. and now it is like bigB putting a shose in their mouth lol ..
expect more core designs from bigB and others to get close to the diamond

Total FURY
I honestly have no issue with any company to use whatever they want .. even if the design is very close to what lane#1 is using .. it actually shows that lane#1 basic idea is true
what I have issues with is those who come here and just run their mouth ... you got your own forum .. go to it and say all you want ... just coming to our forum and running their mouth is not but childish

Storm's Twin V core looks like sort of like a diamond core too, but who cares. there is more to the core than just the shape. Making them look like something recognizable, or something cool just helps sell more balls. It's the technical specs of the core (density, material, mass bias) that ultimately determines the reaction shape.
-

The cores for the AMF Titan series, the Columbia Rage series and the Columbia Pulse series aren't too far off either. Once you wrap it in the outer core, I highly doubt you would see much difference in the reaction shapes unless the densities are way different (given similar coverstocks, that is).
And speaking of coverstocks, don't forget that that would be far more important to the ball's reaction than the core shape and density anyway. For instance, if you wrapped the highest revving and/or most mass bias Diamond/Twin-V/Titan core with an oil-allergic coverstock like what was on the AMF XS, the ball would still skid 60 feet in heavy oil.
NOTE: I'm not knocking the AMF XS - it was absolutely my favorite dry lane ball, but it was as useless as Paris Hilton's MENSA application on oily lanes.

Let's just admit the truth.EVERY core in the last ten years is based off the majic diamond. They have just been completely altering the shape to avoid a lawsuit.Even the light bulb core if you compare it is just a diamond elongated at one end with the facet sides rounded. The pancake core is simply a diamond flattened and rounded.Tha x factor core.Three diamonds crushed together and rounded to hide the true diamond. The only thing they can't reproduce is the majic and that's why it is Lane ONE.End of story. My facts speak for themselves and if you do not agree you're a troll and a basher so go post elsewhere.

I ran across this at bowlingball.com: http://www.bowlingball.com/Bowling-Ball-5031/lane--1-g-force.html
quote:
Lane #1 is working with an all-new design team now that Columbia 300 is producing its equipment. Richie Sposato now is venturing into higher RG and asymmetric core design to further expand the motion characteristics of the line, looking for a more angular move off the spot with strong continuation.
So, I'm wondering - why a new design team? Does Richie work with the company that is pouring the balls and their design team?
IF so, why would it be surprising that Richie may have had input in what ended up becoming the Torsion core? If he choose to leave Brunswick and move to Columbia, the design would stay with the other designers.
