Going to make this Chainsaw work even if it kills me...
« on: November 02, 2009, 01:54:35 PM »
Still searching for a reliable dry-lane ball, and I've got this Chainsaw sitting around that completely confounds me, so the choice is to use this thing or have simply a nice piece of furniture.

Surface preps tried: Box, 600 Abralon, 4000 Abralon, now it's at 1000 plus polish. That's the best so far.

Drillings: 3.75x5.25 pin over ring with CG under middle, then I added a weight hole in P3 on the NAP side of the ball. Seemed to work better with the hole.

I've found that the ball is really speed-sensitive. I really hadn't tried adjusting speed much until this week, but by slowing it down, I do get it to give me a decent read that I hadn't really seen before. But I've changed so much on this ball that I can't really tell if it was me or the changes to the ball itself.

If anyone has unlocked the code to making this thing work, I'm all ears. I'd rather not do a full plug and redrill.

Jess

What's the problem?  Jumpy?  Flop?

It could just be the drill......

Beans was there when mine was drilled, he told me that this ball needed to be drilled stronger, because of how weak this ball was, it is still very weak when I throw it. drilled 3 3/4 by 3 3/4 pin beside ring.

Failure to read. That pretty much describes it.

Ball has ungodly hold, but has offered little response to any area of friction so far. I'm not kidding when I say that I think I can hook my XXXL Starburst more than this.

But then, once in a blue moon, it will just jump off the dry like it had been kicked.

The only surface prep that seemed to cure that problem was to take it to 600 with no polish, and then it hit flat. I believe the above poster is correct -- it needed a stronger drill from the outset. I was hoping to find some kind of surface prep that would allow me to avoid a plug-and-redrill, or perhaps some kind of advice on how to throw the thing (i.e., lots of tilt, little tilt, etc.).

Do you have top weight in this ball I got mine used from Trigg or Zues I have a horrible memory and it had a good bit of thumb weight and was too strong until I put my IT in it which took some thumb weight out and made it much more manageable of a ball for me.... Id suggest trying to add some thumb weight... This ball is beautiful for me now I can roll it down the gutter or slow it down a touch and let her rip and she will move as hard amd smooth as anyrhing....

Mine is OOB and don''''t have any problem with it.
It allows me to shoot outside my normal lines 13 to 5.
Mine is drilled weak by choice to accomplish this -
pin over bridge and cg kicked out around 45*

This is the same drilling I have on my Pearl Cobalt bomb
which is above this ball in my arsenal - for me, this
drilling works best for this core.

Uh, yeah..

Don't know how you got that to work for you, but whatever..

Im currently using a pearl orbit extreme. Ubber cheap with a superflex cover and simple core. Super controlable with a 4000 abralon finish

The Chainsaw has no flip blocks at all. It is very short and centered and almost resembles a ball inside a ball so there are very little dynamics to the core..

I've drilled a few dozen of these balls and tested it at the BR days Lane#1 was running with tons of different styles and the pin below the fingers always worked best..

It kind of has a more updated version of the Columbia Vector series as far as core dynamics...

Anyone who remembers those balls will understand..

Used it tonight for half of my last game, and literally got the first double I've ever had with the ball.

I think the last surface prep is going to work (1000 plus Storm ReactaShine). The ball seems to be getting smoother and a little more predictable as the cover breaks in.

As far as suggestions for changing the drill or the statics, I'm trying hard to avoid plugging it, and since it's already got a weight hole in it I can't punch another in there anywhere. If I had to do it over again, I'd punch the ring finger right through the pin instead of leaving it up a couple of inches, then roll the CG over to the positive rather than the negative side of the centerline.

I got mine used from Doug Sterner.  Pin below ring finger CG Out Leverage according to the drill sheet and a big weight hole in the thumb quadrant.  I love the ball, though I'm still learning when the right time to pull it out is.  The first time I used it (fried lane summer league) I rolled a personal best series (657) using the chainsaw all three games.  I definatly found it to be a bit speed sensitive as well.

Final update to this: As the cover has broken in, it's gotten better and better each week. I amended my full review of the ball to eliminate the recommendation against getting one.

Things I learned about it:

1) It takes an immense amount of dry to get this ball to work.
2) It is very speed-sensitive.
3) The cover is tricky and I had to try several different surface preps, and modify the drilling once, to get it to really roll well.
4) It's only average in terms of overall carry.

However, it is indeed a ball that can be thrown on conditions other alleged "dry-lane balls" will overreact upon.
