Dynamo X2 mini-review...
« on: December 01, 2009, 12:35:29 PM »
Took it out for a test drive tonight. This was a ball I bought used off eBay and, buyer beware, the ad said nothing about the ball having been plugged once before (appeared to have been drilled conventional, at that). I plugged only the thumb this time, which left the pin low under the ring (almost on the midline, actually) with the CG out positive about an inch. About a 3.75 x 3 drill.

The ball had been resurfaced once and it felt like they took it to 1000 plus polish. That's what I stopped at after sanding down the thumb plug, and you can't tell where my work stopped and theirs started.

Anyway, the first game with it on somewhat of a slimy league shot was 242 (third game of the set on fresh). Front four, 2-10 split in the fifth, four more in a row and then 9/7, I think.

Of my older Lane #1 gear, what it mostly acts like is the Hybrid Dirty Bomb, albeit with much more control at the breakpoint. Actually, what the ball reminds me most of is AMF's The Heist solid, but stronger off the spot. Really nice hold and it doesn't seem to be very pattern-sensitive. Scoring pace tonight was a little lower than usual (we've had some mild shot modification lately, plus the weather here today was warm and humid, then cold and rainy all in the span of about 3 hours).

Seems like a good all-around medium ball. Better length than I expected with the drill pattern. Stronger off the spot than the old Brunswick balls, but more controllable than what I've seen lately with the 900 Global covers. I'll post a full review after more testing, since obviously one game is very little to go on.

Thanks for the mini-review Jess.  Glad it looks like it's going to work better for you than the Chainsaw did.

I went back and took a second bite out of the Chainsaw. Finally got the surface to something I can work with (1000 Abralon plus Storm ReactaShine). I've got it usable now. It's been back in the bag for about a month but with all the fiddling they're doing with the shot at my house, I rarely get to use it. What I found out about the Chainsaw is that you have to have pure dry for it to work. Not dry-hyphen anything (medium-dry, wet-dry, etc.). Pure, plain ol' bone-dry dirt. Then it will work.

I'm trying to work out a 7- or 8-ball arsenal for tournaments this year completely from the 900 Global family, which would include recent Lane #1 stuff. Right now, the Chainsaw and XXXL Starburst are in it.

Both Heists are very underrated. The limited-run Heist Pearl may be the best medium-dry pearl ball I've ever thrown.

Both of those balls manage friction very well. Perfect combination of control cover plus a simple, proven core. I suspect that's why the Dynamo X2 is reminiscent of those balls, as the core shapes aren't terribly different and the covers are proven.

You think the Heist Pearl is good on medium dry? Wait til you toss a Blue Death.... fan-dam-tastic.

I have not been this excited about a ball in a long time....

Wish I had the bag room. The last ball on my year's wish list is coming this week (Motiv SX-1). If I got a Blue Death, I don't know what I'd leave at home.

Second go at it with this ball. This one was on our scratch league shot, which is about 4 feet longer and heavier than the one in the first post. First two games were shot using a Dyno-Thane Threshold. The X2 wasn't strong enough to turn the corner. Switched to the X2 in the third game when I started to lose some of my hold room. I can tell this is where this ball is going to be good for me. Lots of hold inside but recovers better than my Heist should I happen to get it outside. This one has probably earned a place in the bag for awhile. Shot 664 series, finishing with 234 with the X2 (highest game of the three).

I don't own the X2, but do own the original Dynamo and it doesn't recover as well as my Heist for me, should I accidently get it outside too far. The Dynamo works well for me, just have to be careful not to get too wide with it whereas the Heist will still get back if thrown a bit too wide.

Keep in mind guys....the Heist has a good flip cap on the top and the bottom of the core while the Dynamo has nothing on the core to help the ball turn the corner. The Dynamo uses a core similar to the old original Diamond cores which were known for their strong heavy roll...not their backend reaction. The new Massacore balls have more of a skid/flip reaction which will help those balls recover better.

I think that''s where the difference is coming from.....

I think the difference is in the surface. My X2 seems to have a fairly high polish on it. It's saving most of its move for the back.

After throwing a half-dozen or so of the Diamond-core balls, this one backends harder than any of them, more so even than some of the old Bomb balls. I definitely think it's the difference between the Brunswick covers and the 900G covers. Same thing with my Supernova XP. The XP is Storm-level angular. The X2 isn't as angular as my XP but it's much more so than my Tsunami H20 or any of my other Diamond stuff.

I have both the Heist and Heist Pearl and neither of those balls is particularly angular for me, even the pearl version, which is polished almost to a mirror level.

The sweet spot for the X2 is that it has a strong backend without being too strong so as to give up control. It sounds to me like 900G and Lane #1 are starting to figure out what really works for them in terms of core/cover combinations. Some of the early stuff after the changeover was hit-or-miss.

Now I've got enough of a data set to do a full review later this week. Really great ball for broken-down heads. Probably the best control of any ball I own in such a situation.
