Title: How did you drill your XXXL?
Post by: novawagonmaster on February 08, 2008, 12:27:01 AM
I went with a RICO drill on the new Starburst XXXL.
I had no idea what to expect, but could not resist the urge to try it.
In short, it works very well. I have not played it on burnt lanes yet, but on a worn out house shot, the ball rolls up really nice.

My black XXXL is drilled Label 1:30. It flares more, but does not finish like the RICO-drilled ball.

I also have a Clear Diamond drilled with the pin on the axis. This is always my spare ball, but it works as a strike ball also. I actually prefer this one over the black. I don't know if the appearance is in my head, or if the ball actually works better. It could just be a comfort issue.

OK, I just zipped up my flame-retardant suit. Go ahead and give me he77 for having three overpriced plastic balls

Damnit Jon, I was all set to say something until you mentioned you are wearing proper forum PPE.  Still though, 3 plastic balls?

My Red XXXL has a 2 inch pin and is drilled pin under RF and CG out just enough that it doesn't need a weight hole and this ball will always remain in my arsenal, regardless of how many other balls I buy, exchange, etc. To simplify what I said....I love this ball and the way it's drilled and will keep it forever.

LOL...  My Crystal is drilled RICO, but I hope to have my new Starburst tomorrow (If I don't get screwed by Fedex again like they did to me today ) and it'll most likely be drilled Stacked...

Grayson, see my post a few posts above this one for how I drilled mine. For me and my style, it is rolly and I love the ball. No matter how many other new balls I might get, this one will always be a part of my arsenal.

med-dry THS

The outside 2 boards are almost not oiled... I can play the XXXL with 14mph and normal revs down the first five on a fresh oiled lane and get it into the pocket... problem is carry...

Stats are in my profile.
When do I use plastic?

One local house puts down a shot that is bone dry outside the 8th board. When I am having an off night, I fight over/under with resin. The XXXL gives me a smoother bump off the dry boards. Granted, you still need to be accurate, but sometimes that is the change I need.

Otherwise, it's always in my bag to combat burnt lanes, especially in tournaments. When the shot moves too deep inside for my "less than manly" rev rate, I can go back up the boards with plastic.

Understand that while my comfort zone is from about 12 out (at the arrows...depending on the house), I can play straight up the outside if the shot is there, and I have been able to move in as far as the 4th arrow. If the shot goes any deeper than the 4th arrow, I'm done. I have to grab my plastic and square up again. When I say "down and in", it just means "much straighter than most modern game spray-and-pray bowlers"

The XXXL is my weapon of last resort... if nothing works... the XXXL will.

How would you guys say the hit of the xxxl compares to reactive?  I am between drilling a Roto Neptune extremely weak or getting an XXXl and putting a "rolly" drilling to it.  I need a little more pop that a target zone, but I don't really need it to "hook" much more.  I just want a little room for error, to carry when I get it there.

on the right condition... as good as any reactive from my experience

XXXl is the hardest hitting plastic ball, It has a full weight block.

The hit and carry are both great as long as you get the ball rolling. If you fire a rocket to the pocket, it will deflect. I am so happy I went with a RICO drill on the new one. I did not think it would make a big difference, but it does. It's not a big hooker, but the fact that it gets into a roll makes all the difference in carry.

Ok then, answer me this, have you ever found it to be over under?  I know this sounds crazy from a plastic ball, but I have a clear wearwolf drilled with an asym drilling and it IS over under. It is KILLER if there is not a trace of carry down, but my target zone does better if there is.  I know I could post a low 6 with the t-zone, I'm wondering how much difference I might see in an xxxl.

My XXXL is drilled about 2-3 inches above the fingers. I'm unsure of the PAP coordinates EXACTLY, but it's roughly 5-5.5 inches from my PAP. I have the new Starburst XXXL, not that it makes a difference, but it's definitely cooler looking! I love the reaction, also. It's super smooth on a fresh oiled shot just going straight up the boards. I don't get much room for error, but when it's in the spot, it's beautiful. When the lanes are hooking even more, the XXXL doesn't hook a lot with them, it hooks only about 2-3 boards more, and I have to go even straighter at spares. Overall, this is my first Lane #1 ball, and my first ever plastic ball (although it has a core), and I LOVE it. I would recommend it to anyone because of how much this ball can come in handy!

With me, no. I only experience "under"

under is fine haha, I would rather that than through the beak.
