Hi there, I'm a stroker, mid revs mid-low ball speed (takes approx 2.3-2.4 seconds to hit the pins), pretty low track but not as low as a spinner. (Sorry for the little ambiguity, coz I'm "sort of" new to bowling and not as familiar with the terminology). Averaging 160-170 with an old brunswick danger zone. I have heard recommendations from friends who own saws that I should start off with a Silver Diamond drilled label leverage as it is very versatile. As always, I'm always seeking for more opinions. Which saw should I get and what drilling (for general purpose conditions). Thanks for any feedback offered!

Look at my post in the Drilling a Silver Diamon section of the Forum. Cranberry might be a good choice also. What do you bowl on? Wood/Synthetic??

I bowl on Synthetic.

I play the DZ on a 12-8 line. Looking for something that is controllable but able to open up my game more. Thanks!

No suggestions??

Since you don't have any Lane#1 experience, why not take BuzzsawMike's suggestion? or the original suggestion?
If you need more information, the Cranberry has the same cover as your Danger Zone with a good basic Lane#1 core. It is not expensive as Lane#1 balls go. It is a solid versus the Silver Diamond's pearlized cover; so it will react more evenly for you. What more do you need?

Oh ok... no coz I'm looking for something that can open up my game more. I guess I'll stick with the silver diamond?

Why do you think the Cranberry cannot open up more game?
Have you used it already?
Since a solid will generally give more pull area as well as swing area, it, the Cranberry, should be able to open up your game more than a pearl, the Silver Diamond.
On a more serious note,
If you're truly a 160-170 bowler, you should be more worried about making spares, than about strike balls.

I have personally seen the cranberry in action and if given a choice, I'd take a Blueberry anytime. Unfortunately though, the bb is no longer produced. As for scores wise, I'd say I do pick up most of my spares, it's just that this old dz (I would say it has seen a few thousand games already) and really hits like a sponge and gives me plenty of washouts.
-
But lets say I do consider the cranberry, what drilling layout would you recommend?

I wouldn't; ask Mike, BuzzsawMike, as he's a pro shop guy, and I assume, a driller and Lane#1 staffer. I was just wondering why you doubted him and posted a few things I know about solids versus pearls. My questions were just that, questions for you to ponder.
FYI The Danger Zone may be worn out, hit weakly, & need re-surfacing, but as for leaving washouts, you do realize that that's not the ball's fault ...

I never even mentioned about doubting him. In fact what he said was Cranberry might be a good choice also. He did not say Cranberry IS A BETTER choice. He was just providing more options for me. Hope you can read carefully before putting words in my mouth thanks.
I put no words in your mouth. Mike suggested a Cranberry and your reply was, "No suggestions??" To me, that was doubting him.
Please be more careful with your criticisms. I was trying to urge you to consider the words of a good referral, from Mike, and some basics that have been around a long time. I was trying to help. I guess I just won't offer it next time.

Ok I guess it's just misunderstanding of tone and language. Anyway maybe I'll just take both balls? They're both good anyway.

xyun, good to have a newcomer to ball reviews who wants to improve his game!!
the silver diamond will get pretty far down the lane, then make a sharp turn toward the pocket. personally, i wouldn't consider this a versatile ball. the cranberry may be more versatile simply because of the coverstock. the weight block is more aggressive, however.
if you can still get a blueberry, that would be my humble suggestion.
go to the lane #1 website: www.lane1bowling.com look at each of the balls, which has an example of how each ball rolls. pick the reaction you want, find a good driller, and bust those pins wide open!!

let me amend my post, please . . .
both the silver diamond and the blueberry have powerkoil 18 coverstocks.
the only appreciable difference i see between the two in the stats is that the differential is slightly higher with the blueberry.
i've never seen a dulled up silver diamond . . .
at any rate, i'll stick with my opinion that the blueberry is probably more versatile . . .
