Blueberry C/2--How good is/was this ball?
« on: June 06, 2008, 03:04:50 PM »
Friend of mine found a used one in a bowling center proshop for sale. It is a 1 inch pin and has been fully plugged.  It was cheap, so he got it.  The plugs look really good ( you can hardly see them ).

The ball is drilled stacked, with the pin at about the 3:30 position to the ring finger and the cover is very shiny.  He didn't like it at all, said it didn't have enough finish for him and didn't carry well at all.  Now I have inherited the ball.

The only difference in our span is his ring finger is about 1/16 shorter tham mine, which I can allow for.  What can I expect from this ball?

I had the Pink Raspberry, but it wasn't highly polished like the Blueberry.
It was a good House shot ball, sort of controlled, with the power of the PK 18 coverstock. Less snappy than a Danger Zone. Unless you want to use it on less than medium oil, I'd put less of a gloss polish on it, maybe even a 1000 - 1500 grit matte finish on it.

Oh, and given its age, it may need a rejuvenation treatment of some kind. In fact, I'd do that before I'd do anything else with it.

See what some of the reviewers said (unless you've read them already):

charlest,

My friend said that the guy he got it from had done a rejuvenation prior to having plugged the ball, so that shouldn't be a problem.  After plugs were worked down and rejuvenation was supposedly done, a coat of polish was applied, but I don't know what kind.

My friend also has more axis tilt than I do, so the ball is going to be rollier in my hand than it was in his to begin with. He tends to be able to use stronger balls than me, as well as stronger drillings, that is why he thought this one might be good for me, as it seemed a little weak/lazy for him.

I may take the high gloss finish off it and try it, if it seems squrty and weak for me also.  The pk18 balls have always seemed to work well for me, but that was with big B cores in them.

If all else fails to make it work, I will try a flare increasing hole and see what happens.

Sure, try the current finish and see what you get.
If you need to change, PK 18 solid is very responsive to changes. I assume by now you know the routine of changes to try and what generally works for you.

You can expect a lifetime of misery with this ball.

It's, all but, a paperweight or a boat anchor.

Please send it to me, and I'll do everything in my power to revive the fallen soldier.

I loved mine.  It's tough to screw up a ball wrapped in PK18.  EXTREMELY receptive to cover alterations.  Don't give up on the ball as quickly as your friend did.

Juggernaut, I've had 2 of them, one with a long pin & one short. My short pin was drilled similar to yours, & it was not real affective for me. I plugged my fingers & redid the thumb & rotated the pin position to make it about a 1:30 label. Both the pin & cg were close to the palm, & just that suttle change made a world of difference in the balls reaction. The blueberry is/was a great ball in my opinion.

I think too the PK 18 cover with the C2 core is golden. Wife has the LRG C2 core. I like that older Big-B covers. That one was one of the better ones IMO.

UPDATE:

After further consideration of the reaction my friend got from this ball, and knowing how balls USUALLY react for him, I decided the weights must be off somehow. ( Yes, I am aware there are those who say static weights don't matter, but something just didn't seem right)

When weighed up, the ball was only 14lbs 7oz, but had 1 1/16 oz finger weight and 1 oz positive sideweight.  Balls with weights close to this have always seemed "lazy" to me, so I found the grip center and went 6 1/2 inches over and 1/2 inch up, drilling a weight hole to take out some side and finger weight.  This also ended up being what is termed a "flare increasing" weighthole.

After a few attempts, got the ball down to 5/8 oz finger and 1/4 oz positive side.  Made quite a difference.

Flare rings opened up a bit.  Ball read the midlanes earlier and allowed the ball to set up into a roll better with a much better move on the backends.

Ball seems to be pretty darn strong now. Really looking forward to trying it on the house shot this week.

UPDATE #2

O.K., I've had the opportunity to use this ball for a couple of full stes now and, as bad as I hate to admit it, this seems to be a really great piece.

Shined it up and it is versatile enough to use it for all four games of summer trio league.  Very receptive to hand positions and speed adjustments.

I have had several lane 1 balls in the past ( Silver Diamond, Cherry C/2, XXXL, Solid Uranium ), but this one matches up with me better than any of those did.  I already have found that when the heads start to dry out, I can make a small release adjustment with NO loss of carry.  And as the night goes on, I can even move deeper with the weaker release and still kick the corners out.

Two full sets in and am averaging 226 with it and am just starting to get real comfortable with it.  As a matter of fact, it was the ONLY ball I carried to the bowling center last night when I shot the 257-210-227-246/940 set.

Now its got me looking at that teal THS real hard...........

Good bowling & nice to hear you got it figured out. It really is a great ball. You may want to keep your eyes open for the pink & black raspberry, even the LRG, as they have the identical weight block.

Thanks for the heads up.  Sadly, without knowledge of what I had, I let a midweight pink slip through my fingers a while back .  I believe Doug Sterner ended up with it though.  At least it found a "SAW" man!
