Lane #1 and USBC Agree to Terms...
« on: August 30, 2005, 09:14:30 AM »
After talking with the USBC directors, we have agreed to terms on the Super Carbide Bomb. Below is what transpired...

USBC,

As per your request, all polished Super Carbide Bombs in our warehouse will be returned to it's original state. Furthermore, I will issue a statement on our website, re-calling all factory polished Super Carbide Bombs.

As per your conversation, it is agreed that the USBC will take the Polished Super Carbide Bomb off the "non-approved ball" ball list.

It is also agreed that you will provide me with paperwork, or thru an e-mail, stating that pro shops can polish and sell Super Carbide Bombs. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Richie Sposato
President/CEO
Lane #1

Richie,

I am in receipt of your intentions.  Thank you for your cooperation.  USBC will remove the Polished Super Carbide Bomb from the non-conforming list.  The original Super Carbide Bomb will remain on the approved list.

The ability of a pro-shop or bowler to drill, polish, sand, etc. is a right they have of any approved ball.  Any ball that has come off the manufacturing line (at any point, even after re-call) with the original dull surface is considered an approved ball - and therefore, can be polished, sanded, etc.

Regards,

USBC Technical Director

I am glad to hear something was worked out. It's to bad everyone involved had to go through that. Knowing both balls are identical, one in the same ball, it just doesn't make sense that lane 1 couldn't sell it as the same product but with a factory polished coverstock. Oh well, thank you MR. Buzzsaw for letting us know.

I find it VERY frustating to see that USBC is forcing companies to run their business based on THEIR rules.

There is a BIGGER market of unsanctioned bowlers than there is sanctioned.  That market is just going to grow if USBC continues to pull crap like this.

Just my 2 cents.

Scott

Heavy, I tihnk that's the intention.....if we ask nicely Richie will probably let us in on how they polished them in the first place :-)

How about it Richie? Care to give us the lowdown on how to get that pretty finish you guys had on the ball?

So when I walk in to a tourney and they see my shiny pro shop sanded/polished SCB, and if they ask, "is that a polished SCB?", my response will be, "this is my dull SCB, which I had fine grit sanded, and then had the pro shop polish it to the condition you see."

What a crock that they have to even recall the balls, but that is what happens when a group (USBC), that is supposed to look out for the participants of their sport, has too much power, and to save face, they flex their muscles.

As far as I am concerned, the only ball that ever existed was teh Super Carbide Bomb.

The balls were probably polished at the Brunswick plant on their polishing machine. I know Columbia uses a machine made for White Dots that is something stupid like 75,000 lbs. per sq. foot of pressure to polish like a marble. I just think the USBC can kiss my buttocks. There rules suck. It has nothing to do with the integrity of the game. We all know that scores can be halted with lane maintenance rule changes.  Thanks  beans

Thanks a ton Richie for all the help on this.  I know USBC was being kind of childish, and I think they realized they did something really stupid by making a dull version approved and the polished not approved (both should have been approved), and I as well as many others here appreciate the hard work Lane 1 put into this to get this resolved.  Great customer service, and you've kept a customer in me on how this was handled.

I wonder if the USBC reps realize how STUPID this makes them look.
I mean come on now why does it matter who polishes the ball.
I think that organized bowling is headed for some rough times with these guys at the helm, can we PLEASE get someone with some common sense.

I think the USBC just got pissed off at the ad saying approved by USBC when Lane#1 polished it

So, if I understand correctly, the Polished Super Carbide Bomb never existed.  Not on the unapproved list, not on the approved list in the polished state. So, the sanded version is the only SCB on the market,  just a few came out mistakenly polished at the factory, right? *wink, wink*

C'mon guys, seriously, can't we let this whole thing go by now?

Mr. Buzzsaw, I have nothing but respect for you. You have turned a smaller company into a much-hyped ball manufacturer through the grassroots bowlers like myself. I currently have 2 Lane#1 bowling balls in my arsenal, and am adding another (although possibly removing one too).   BUT, can you please ask the F.O.S. to stop bringing up the same stuff. I think that all that is happening now, is that everyone else on BR that isn't directly linking themselves to Lane#1 equipment is starting to get a bad outlook for the bowlers on this site that do consider themselves F.O.S. or Sawheads. I know that this is a weird time, what with the whole approved/non-approved dilemma, but I think that there are miseducated people bashing an organization that is trying to set up something DECENT. I applaud you for your continued interaction on this site, with the people that have made your company so popular and desired to throw. But I don't think that the USBC was completely in the wrong with this whole situation, and I'm sure you'd agree, Mr. Sposato.  Thank you in advance for your time,

Big Willy Style
