Lane #1 ball for short oil pattern
« on: May 28, 2008, 07:17:02 PM »
To all you Lane #1 gurus! Please suggest a Lane #1
ball that I can use on short 25 to 27 foot light oil
pattern. Drilling suggestions as well. Bowling stats
is in my profile. Thank you in advance.

OMG!! Have you tried to polish the Liberator??  Now that's a job for a masochist!!

Of balls you can actually find right now, a Liberator polished up would sound good to me. Personally, I think you can take a G-Force Evolution and kill that shot if your speed is good enough. That's one of the best balls for dry conditions that I've found.

The XXL or even the XL would be great picks, too, as would the original XXXL. The Starburst's cover is so slick that I wouldn't recommend it unless you can rev a boulder.

LOL...No, not yet, but I can imagine.

On another note, there's a guy selling an inventory of 99 NIB Uranium HRGs on eBay for around $100 shipped. That would do the trick and I'm convinced an Evolution with a weak drill would, too.

I had heard this, but polishing the Liberator is not that big of a deal.

First, take the cover up to 4000 grit abralon. I went 1000, 2000, then 4000. Then, hit it with a polish that meets your objectives. I didn't want to go overboard, so hit mine with 3M Finesse-It II Rubbing compound. The ball has very nice shine.

If I actually encounter a condition where this setup is still too aggressive, I'll hit it with a coat of Lane#1 (Bean's) Secret Sauce.

Anyway, don't be afraid to alter the Liberator cover. You can always readjust as needed.

Steven, that is all I have used for polish of any kind for several years until a couple of years ago when I started using some Brunswick Factory Gloss on a couple of Lane 1 balls, but I still use the 3M Finesse-It II most of the time. Tried the Beans Polish and for my weaker hand and low revs and my style, it made my balls skate thru the break point regardless of what sanding grit or how light I polished them. From what I hear and read, it appears to be great stuff, but it doesn't seem to match up for my style.

For the time being, I am able to use my
Starburst XXXL in this pattern. I had to bring
the surface down to 600 grit and polished it with
Ebonite Extended Polish. I'll see whether I can
use the new THS Buzzsaw on this condition, with
layout recommended by Doug Sterner.

Hey, Jim. You hit the nail on 3M Finesse-It II. It's a great all around polish/compound. I too now use it for most of my polishing needs.

As far as the Secret Sauce, I too have found you have to be careful how you use it. Too much, or not enough underlying grit, and the ball does tend to skate. I've found my best success with the Sauce when I've applied very little.

I referenced the Sauce on the Liberator because if 4000 grit and the Sauce doesn't get you through the toast, the lanes are really in bad shape. Luckily, I've only hit this a few times over the past few years.

My suggestion is to find one of their weaker pearl resins or urethane and drill it pin axis or semi-pin axis.

. . . Single Drill ball was used 3 games max
. . . drilled semi-pin axis
. . . span is around 4 1/4 from cut-to-cut
. . . specs before the drill were: 15.26 lbs, 3.2 tw, 1-2" pin

Roy, I do have a 15lb Emerald Pearl. I am thinking
whether I do need another one or not. If it is in
16 pounds, I might buy it right away.
