lane 1 balls
« on: April 27, 2010, 01:21:55 PM »
I am in a debate right now about buying 2 new balls.  The debate that I have is the two curves vs the red and blue deaths.  I have read all of the reviews that I have found out there, so now I am seeking opinions on these balls.  I have had some lane 1 equipment, currently have a super carbide bomb and a solid cobalt.  Have owned others, wish I would have kept my cherry and pink raspberry.  But they are gone and need to fill some voids.

The Big Curve needs heavy oil.  IMO, the Curve is the best ball to come out from Lane#1 in a good many years.  And a must have at that.

The Deaths were good balls as well.  If you need and oil ball, but something not as strong as the Big Curve the Red Death would Work.  For me the Blue Death was a smooth medium oil ball.

I eventual sold my Death's cause I found I was just using the Curve all the time...

Zeus, it is about drillings and match-ups for people and their styles. I know of a dealer on BR just like yourself that prefers the Blue Death over the Curve. I haven't thrown the Curve but with my Blue Death playable on medium-light to medium-heavy oil and moving so quick and strong on the back-end with pin-mix I haven't had from any ball for a long time, I doubt the Curve would offer me anything that I don't have. For others like yourself, it might, I don't know.  My point is that it depends on the bowler, how the ball is drilled, and how the ball matches up to the bowler and his style. Drilled correctly, I think slumpp would be happy with either the Blue Death or Curve.

Brick: You're right in that it is about match ups. Having said this, my assessment is in line with zeusjr.

I have both the Red Death and Big Curve. I like them both, but the Big Curve is just flat out a more aggressive (and versatile) ball. I was able to test out the original Curve last weekend, and I can see it as an all around versatile medium condition piece. It's a fun ball to throw.

I like the Big Curve so much, I've refinished and polished my Red Death for mediums. The Curve line is one of the better releases Lane#1 has had over the past few years.

My favorite right now is the Curve - hands down!
I used Mo''s drilling suggestion for medium lane condition and it''s money.

My Specs:
PAP:  4 15/16 over and 1/8 up   Medium Tracker
Speed:  16 - 16.5 mph at the deck,
Axis Tilt:  17*
Axis Rotation:  45*
Revs:  ~350

Mo Suggested the following drill:
50* x 4” x 40* with x-hole at P3

I am thinking of having the same drill for my Big Curve
since I already have my Black Raspberry (500 Abralon) as an oiler.

Easy there, I do realize what your saying.  He asked for an opinion and I gave mine...  I have no issue with the Blue Death, Curve is just a better ball in my opinion.

Steven, from what I have heard from others, no agruement from me on the Big Curve vs the Red Death for really heavy oil with the Curve probably being the better ball although the Red Death will do the job also....My issue is with the Blue Death vs the Curve. Some people such as Zeus prefers the Curve while others like the Blue Death. Thus matchup comes in here....Curve for one person and Blue Death for another on the same conditions. Curve for Zeus because he has thrown both and prefers the Curve and Blue Death for me as it does so great for me that I can't imagine another ball exceeding what it does for me, thus what does the Curve have to offer me that I don't already have. That is where I am coming from in comparing teh two balls.

Good. And there is a chance you'd like the Curve line even better than pie.

What a concept!! Think about giving one a try. It might help get you out that bowling funk you've been in.

Not enough oil...

Bowling funk is definately operator error, not the balls fault.

However, my Intense Inferno was roling out at 30' down the lane..

Thanks for all of the insight.  I do agree that it is all about drilling.  Unfortunately I moved so if and when I get these balls I will make a road trip up by Chicago and get them drilled by a proshop I know and trust there.  I think the second most under-rated item is trust in the ball.  As I said I loved my pink raspberry and original cherry.  The cherry was a great ball on synthetics, and yes people could not believe the backend it had.  The pink.....well, when you spank the other team with a pink bowling ball, well you get the picture.  But I never really scored night in and out with those two balls, they each had a specific nitch to fill.  My super carbide bomb I have tossed more 700s and big games than any other lane one ball I have had.  Yes it does roll out when there is not enough oil to use it.  But I have also used it polished and it does quite well.   I think now it is a matter of tossing a coin, and getting a couple punched out to fill the voids.  Oh, and Roy, you like the curve better than the original cherry and pink?  That says alot.

Thanks again

I think that the cores also have something to do with it.  I had the chance to throw the Curve a few shots last weekend and see it in action.  The ball is awesome, but I know from experience that I don't match up well with asymmetrical cores.

If you had success with the Super Carbide Bomb than you might also do well with the Red and Blue Death, which both have Bomb-style cores.  And the Blue Death is an amazing piece.

Having seen all 4 balls in action I don't think you can go wrong either way!

dougb, I agree with you about the cores.  I do like both types of cores alot.  And I have had balls with both cores that I disliked alot.  I loved my cherry, but hated the blueberry I had, even after drilling it 2 different ways.  I gave it to a friend who is still killing them on synthetics with it.  Go figure.  The big curve looks interesting, and I do like having a ball that kills the rack with a "unusual" color on it.  I got hooked on the pink raspberry a long time ago.  Now I might have to try and find another just to keep stored away.

Out of all of the Lane 1 balls I have owned both past and present, I have had 3 that have really stood out above all others and those 3 all had/have the bomb cores....Solid Cobalt...Red Death...Blue Death. Like dougb, I also know from experience that I don't match up well with asymmetrical cored balls of any brand.
