another "how to play the shot" post
« on: September 13, 2005, 08:32:42 AM »
So I missed last week of league, but I hear that they've changed the shot.
First week I used my GN, from outside.  Shot was about 40 feet, pretty flat, dry on the back ends.  I tried from around 5 board (where the lane guy was) and intended to try in (12 board) the next week, with the GN.  BUT, I hear that they are now not stripping the backends, hence a LOT of carrydown.  (180 averages shooting 420 last week was not uncommon).  SO, I'm thinking the Super Carbide (NOT BOMB) from deeper in?  Thoughts?

In my opinion, with a pattern that long (and not so strong backends), you would likely be best off playing in a little tighter.  The super carbide might be the ideal ball if it will push far enough down the lane...  if not, you may have to polish/try something a little weaker...

Good Luck!

I think you have the right idea Rags. If you have the SCB, I would take it & play around 20 board with a firm shot & little swing. Sounds like you have the same mentality of people running your center as we have in ours. Our center switched to a heavier viscosity oil on the week of our sweepers. I shot 660 & 670 the 2 weeks prior, then struggled for 580 sweeper night. The shot is so messed up now a guy I know averaged 223 in the summer, started winter with 505 & 482! It may be a long winter! Just one more example how the lane man controls EVERYTHING whether USBC thinks so or not. Good Luck!

THEY LIED TO ME!!  The swine.  First shot with the SC: standing 26, hit 11 at the arrows and flushed out the 2-4; hmmmmm.  Either they went back to the first week shot or every pair is different (and they do all play somewhat different).  Ended up using the GN hitting 5 at 20 feet.  The only "transition" I saw all night called for speed manipulation.  Started pretty firm, had to slow down a lot the second game and then accelerate more than I had backed off by the third game.  Tough shot; had 187, 231, 187 (two opens first and last game, all due to pushing thru the break point and leaving the 2 - 10 with others for company).
