I sometimes hear people say a 300 doesn't matter.
« on: July 01, 2008, 01:28:45 PM »
I ask that you come see me. It would matter greatly to me.

I started with 187-174 tonight in league. I bowled pretty well to get such low scores, complicated by such strangeness as pocket 7-9s, pocket 4-8-10s, 10 pins that were going over but got stood back up by something else, etc. I was doing this with a Roto Grip Epic Saga.

Having lost the first two games, I decided what the heck, I'll throw the Tsunami H20 I couldn't get to play during practice. And I proceed to start with the front eight.

The worst shot of all was the eighth frame. I let the pressure affect me just enough to grab the ball on the way down. I figured it was DOA for sure and would leave a split, but some mystery oil appeared in the middle of the lane and it held up just long enough to get a very, very high strike.

I don't know why I gagged on that shot -- I've been to the 12th ball before, once. Shot 296 and didn't even feel that pressured on the 12th shot. In fact, I shot 296 because I was expecting to lurch it, and sent it out wide on purpose. Just my luck, I got out of the ball cleanly, and left the 2-4-5-7.

So I step up in the ninth. I was less than half as nervous as the eighth frame, even with the crowd. You know the old days when everyone stopped to watch a 300 try? Well, the good ol' days were back. I had probably 30 people watching, including a few who came out of the bar to do so.

I pured this shot, maybe a half-board inside target at most, and left a blast 10-pin down there. If the 6-pin wasn't broke in half it was at least chipped from the force of the 3 hitting it, I swear. I couldn't have thrown it any better. I covered the spare.

I then go to the 10th, and not that it matters but I left a charging pocket 9 and for some stupid reason missed it to bag 257 on the night.

I say all that to say this -- I've been bowling in leagues, without a break, since I was 17. I'm now 35. That's 18 years of being in a bowling alley at least once a week.

I've averaged 185-200 most of the last 8-9 years with the exception of the time I was down for a right wrist injury, and even then I still booked in the mid-170s. I've averaged 200+ twice, once in a sanctioned league, averaged 170 in PBAX and shot enough 700s to forget the number.

But I don't have that 300, and I don't get as many chances as I used to. I used to get the front four routinely. Now it rarely happens. I've managed to do a good job extending it past four when I've had it, because I'm well aware I haven't got the talent to have unlimited rounds in the chamber.

The injuries are starting to add up, and the economy has kept me from practicing as much as I'd like. My window of opportunity gets smaller.

So the next time you hear someone say "300s don't matter," or "300s are a joke," point them my way. I'll be glad to take as many off them as they'll give me. One would be enough.

Jess

Exactly! Keep going as you never know when it will be your night. when I finally bowled my first 300 I had another a couple of weeks after and at the time I was also thinking I would never bowl one. Also after 20 odd years of bowling I recently picked up my first 7-10 split and was fortunate enough to spare it in the league, another thing I never thought I would do.

As I said on another similar thread, people may say a 300 does not matter but when you bowl one it means EVERYTHING,regardless of who you are, what you average and how many 300's you have already bowled.

I hope yours turns up in the very near future.

I feel your pain Jess. 5 299's , more 279's and 289's to remember but no 300's. Only saving grace for me is that i did shoot 805 back in the urethane days when it was much harder to do. Keep plugging away cause you never know when it will/can happen

i don't think that people don't care about 300's i think that its much more common than it use to be. i myself have a couple in league and several more in practice and pot bowling but i still look at a 300 with the same prestige as when i was a jr bowler watching the local big shots bowl. even now with a couple it still means alot in my opinion to get to the opportunity for one.

I think its relative to your scoring environment.  I can see and agree with that comment in places where there are many 300's shot on a weekly basis (see Chako's bowling center in northeastern PA... 99 300 games shot in the 07-08 season).  In that case its almost seems to be a matter of only being somewhat consistent.  On the other hand, there are places where shooting a 300 game is quite an accomplishment and maybe only one of a handful for the year.  In that case, they definitely matter and should be honored.  Unfortunately, looking at the stats doesn't tell you which is which.. only absolute numbers.

Chacko's is in my association in NEPA. I have (3) 300 games there. I had (4) 300's at their old center Chacko's West.  I have (45) 300's total and even though the 300's I have in Sate tourneys and other prestigous events mean more because they are a little more credible. I still have a nice feeling even on the great wall of china when I shoot a big score.

Don't ever let anyone tell you that your 300's don't count or are tainted. It is what it is and that is what the game has come too.

The people that say it doesn't matter, probably doesn't have any and haven't even been close. I've enjoyed all of mine and they do matter, as do the 800's! Keep hanging in there and when you least expect it, it will happen! Good luck and good bowling, Bruce

Keep shooting Jess, I too would love a 300, I shot the front seven this last year twice once to leave a pocket 7-10 and once to leave a high flush 4.  I have several friends who are avid golfers who want that hole in one.  I would much rather shoot a 300 on a THS or sport pattern.
Good luck.

I have plenty of 300's during my career.
Do I still get pumped while on a big string??  Yes
My nerves don't get as jittery as in the past after one.
I recently shot #20 with an Evolution.
Had to keep emotions under control because I had a chance for a HUGE set after starting 267-300.
Came back and made quality shots to finish off with a 233 for 800.
What makes this one memorable is its the 1st 800 ever shot in this house ever.
The house has been around for 50+ years.

Early on in my career everytime I had the front 11 I finished it off for 300.
I was 11/11 and thought it was a given on shooting the 3.
We'll then I went thru a period of bad breaks or bad karma.
Front 11 then you name it i'd leave it.
Ringing 7's.
Flat 7's.
Fast 8.
Pocket 7-10.
6-8-10.
6 pin.
Every pin in the back row at least once.

I was getting frustrated but I came around and got back to striking on the fill ball.
Now i'm at 20- 300's.
11-299's.
2-298's.
2-297's.

I cherish the honor scores I throw more so now.

I am proud of shooting my 3s and I don't care what anyone says it is still tough to throw 12 shot is in a row of decent quality, anyone that says other wise is lying through their teeth.

Bass good job on that three if it is the house I am thinking of that is great bowling! It sucks that I won't be able to bowl against you next year at the T&O I was looking forward to going head to head with even the you would probably mop the floor with me.

I was fortunate to throw my first sanctioned 300 this past April 08, 2008. I am so glad that i picked up a tip somewhere about breathing. The first 9 piece of cake, then.......the pressure started to rise, dare i say INTENSE! 10 down and then what i wasn't expecting, the whole bowling alley got quite, OH NO, they are all looking at me! I'm introverted, so this really added to the pressure! Somehow 11 down and 1 to go as all the people supporting with cheers, OH MY GOD HELP ME! My knees began to lose strength, my heart is pounding faster, faster and i'm trying to make believe that no one is watching me, while i BREATHE, BREATHE..... i should have asked for a rerack, lol! No thanks to me but all credit to my ENRICHED URANIUM, i pulled that rascle about 3 boards left and somehow i carried high on the head pin (normally leave the 4 pin, LUCKY!) Finally.....I'm shocked that i didn't pass out from the most adrenaline rush i ever experienced playing sports. Then as people congrats me, i begin to hear alot of bowlers that i look up to say that i don't have mine yet, i have a ton of 279s, 290+s, then i realized what i accomplished, It means everything!
