Looking for a new drilling
« on: October 04, 2006, 12:48:00 PM »
I have a problem with squeezing my thumb when I release is there a drilling that would angle the thumb like 5 degrees back and would that stop me from gripping the ball ? I've tried just about everything else and I still grip it on my release ! Any help would be great!!

You need to change your thumb pitches, not the drilling.

Thats what I mean, but i'm talking a radical pitch back (away from fingers) like 5 to 10 degrees? Can that be done? will it work?

Actually, instead of angling the thumb back (reverse pitch), you would actually want to go the other direction...bottom of the thumb towards the center of your span (forward pitch).  Increasing the amount of forward pitch will help you hold onto the ball without having to squeeze (actually you should never squeeze...that's an indication of an improper fit).  I would suggest going into a reputable proshop (an IBPSIA certified one if possible), to have your grip checked.  Likely its just a matter of making a small adjustment.  Good luck,

agreed with both, you need to add some forward pitch, ahve your shop check it i bet there is reverse in it now, I run 1/4 forward and never have to squeeze the ball nor do i ever feel like i am dropping it

I have 1/16 reverse pitch now. The guy that drills my stuff is VERY good. All my stuff feels the same and I have 8 balls all drilled by him.You guys know more then me but, forward pitch seams like I would squeeze more. I will try it and see what happens. maybe go 1/8 forward? Thanks hope it works!!

What is your current span?  Bill Tayor suggests (as a starting place anyways) that a span of 4 1/4" should have 0 pitch.  Shorter than 4 1/4, divide the difference (4 1/4 minus actual) by two and that's the amount of forward...  Longer than 4 1/4 (actual- 4 1/4) divided by two is the amount of reverse.  BUt again, that's only a guide.  Personally, my span is 4 11/16 total and I use 1/8 reverse..where Taylor would call for roughly 1/4 reverse...  Another hang-up may be thumb hole being too large.  I find that I tend to "squeeze" the ball if/when my thumb is a little big.  Usually when I hang in a ball, its a result of squeezing it and I will immediately add another piece of tape.  This forces me to relax my thumb in order to get out of the ball...

Lefty, the guys are giving you correct info about less reverse or more forward. You also may need to adjust the lateral(side) pitch one way or the other. The amount of forward you may need will depend on several factors. A couple of them being span & thumb flexibility.

I went to my proshop guy and told him about the pitch change, said he would do it but the reason I sometimes squeeze is cuz I bend my thumb at release. So we came up with putting some tape in the bottem front of my thumb hole so I cant do that. The result 754 and not one time did I sqeeze at release. This may not be the best way to fix  this but hoping that I will naturally just forget all about gipping it on release. thanks so much for all the help.

that radical reverse pitch isnt gonna help you imo you span is to long i used to have the same problem till i shortened my span and now have very little if any grip pressure
