starburst drilling concern
« on: March 01, 2008, 10:26:41 AM »
I just picked up a new starburst and was disappointed to find it drilled with the pin and center of gravity in the middle of the grip.  The shop drilled up a Temper for me 2 months ago so they had my info on file and we never talked specifically about the drilling.  I guess i assumed they would drill it simlar to the Temper, rather than a normal plastic ball.  I havent thrown the ball yet but am wondering how much this will affect the overall hook.  I know its plastic and wont hook a lot to begin with but i want a little action.  I throw around 14 mph, probably slightly below medium revs if that helps.  Anybody have any thoughts?

Thanks

The Starburst should be drilled strong for use as a strike ball. I would be disappointed also with that layout. I would put a bit of the blame on yourself for not talking with your driller about the ball first. =:^D

Yeah, i can see that.  I dont think they were very familiar with the ball.  I talked to one staff member and she was clear what i wanted out of the ball.  A strike ball for very dry conditions but also some help with the ten pin.  The problem might have been that another staff member drilled it.  She even made a comment when I picked it up that it was expensive spare ball.

How far was the pin from the cg? And how much top weight? That could have been why it was drilled that way....just my two cents

Thanks for the replies.  Any idea how much difference in ball reaction to expect with a stronger drilling?

Did you buy the ball for a strike ball or a spare ball or both?

No.
If you had one, you might understand.
If I was to start bowling today and had to build an arsenal, this would be the very first ball I would buy.

I wanted to use it as both strike ball on very dry and spare ball....  I threw for the first time today.  It worked great as a spareball.  Throwing it a ten pin with some revs and it definately hung on at the edge and even came back a little at the end.  Could also roll it more end over end straight at the ten too.  Could get it to hook a few boards as a strike ball.  I started out throwing it straight up the first arrow.  Got it to hook into the 3-6 pocket.  Then tried up the second arrow and easy on the speed and was able to get close to the pocket pretty consistenly.  Carry was very good when I got it near the pocket.  No abnormal leaves.  I dont have the most consistent release so I cant get much further into detail than that for now.  I started out using my temper but had trouble keeping it on the right side after the first game.  Used the starburst the whole third game and bowled my highest game of the night.  Nothing special, 167-138-177.  Definately looking forward to trying it out again.  I really thought I was going to be disappointed with the drilling but I really liked it as my spareball.  And I got it to hook a little as a strike ball as long as I kept the speed down.  Very speed sensitive.  Thought I'd be at the pro shop for a redrill Monday morning but now I'm going to give it a chance as is for a little while.
