Which Saw's for me?
« on: September 28, 2003, 07:10:11 PM »
I have been looking at the equipment from Lane1 for a while now and believe that it is finally time to try it. Seems as though once people throw them they become Lane1 addicts...lol. My only decision is.....which one? I bowl in 4 leagues in 3 different houses, and this past year I bowled in 40+tourny's.
I see a lot of different patterns but never really see enough oil to get "shut-out". I am probably what one could consider a power/stroker w/ above avg. revs.
I currently have in my bag X-factor, X-deuce, Sonic-x, and the Fuel for the mud. The X-factor has been a great one for mewith a complete set of rings and a few certificates for multiple's. However, not long ago it almost left me and went to the Big House as a faulty belt in the return placed a few attractive flat spots on her. Now after repair, it's not the same. I think she's mad at me for letting that happen to her, but she won't let me score like she used to.
So here is my question. Which one? I want to replace that spot in my bag, with something similar. Would the Cherry Bomb be it or would you suggest something else? Any suggestions are appreciated, Thanks. Also, where is the best place to get Lane1 equipment?

If you want any Saws that sort of resemble the equipment you have already, try a Cherry Bomb, Black Cherry Bomb, and the XL.

I can speak from experience that a CG out drill on the XL will smoothen things out for you.  My XL is drilled (5x4) pin UNDER ring and CG kicked out while my Sonic Solid is 4x4.  The movement down the lane is very similar, but the XL is stronger on the backend.  I also think the hit and carry are better with the XL too.  The XL is best suited for medium to light oil patterns with less carrydown the better.  With the XL you can get a little deeper than the Sonic Solid if you like to open up the lanes.

Thaks for the reply APK. So you think that the Cherry bomb would most closely match the reaction from my now dis-abled X-factor? Then when I replace the Deuce go with the Black Cherry? This is of course if my Lane1 experiment goes as planned...lol.
Also I forgot to mention that my Sonic is of the pearl variety and I have one of those love/hate relationships with it, although as of late I believe I am figuring it out a bit. I absolutely love the roll and reaction as well as the hit, however it is very condition specific for me and I can just as easily pop-off a 270 or 170 with it. I tend to have to swing it wide just to burn up energy or else I will leave something standing.
As far as drillings go I apoligize in advance as I am one of those composite 225 or so bowlers that know as much about drillings as I do the economics of the Central American Farmer...
I am (with-out trying to sound cocky) probably one of the most fluid bowlers I know with "textbook" style, Above avg. speed and revs (I am  bigger guy), And completely unmuscled arm-swing when I am on...lol. Thanks in advance to any recomendations and also as to whom to buy from.

If you're looking to replace an X-Factor with a Lane #1 ball, it's gotta be the pearl Cherry Bomb.  'Nuf said!

Yup, just like Seadrive said, like you thought it would.

I also have the pearl Sonic X, which is a touch stronger than the Solid in the backs because of drilling.  It is also a love hate relationship for me too, there are days I can kill the shot with them and days the shot kills me with them.  I found to get alot of over under from them and decided to go back to my roots and use the XL.  With a new face on it the balls rolls just like either Sonic would.  That's just something you can consider if you get tired of pulling your hair out or having bad nightmares from the Sonic X.  Like I said, it has more backend and can handle some more oil than either of them can.

I wonder about replacing the Deuce with the new Black Cherry Bomb. I suspect the BCB would be a stronger ball, but don't know for sure. Has anyone seen or used both with similar drillings?

The Duece was more of a solid matte then the Black Cherry Bomb, but the back end of the Black Cherry Bomb is a lot stronger.  I know you can drill a lot of back end out of a ball, but why.  The BCB is tremendous especially on a Christmas tree shot, but not recommended with short oil or light oil.

My friend uses the Black Cherry Bomb and his, strangely enough comes polished almost to a high finish.  He's currently using a 4x3 drill pattern, 50 degree layout on it and from what I've seen it's strong enough for first shift oil but will wear down by the end of the second game.

I'd say that if you polish the cover to an even higher finish and keep a relatively even drill like that it should be close to the Deuce.  The BCB is definitely stronger in it's own right, but you can get near results with tweaking.

So......if the BCB is not you're cup of tea then we have the all famous now discontinued Blue Berry, which might end up matching the Deuce a little closer.

Take your pic.

Thanks again for the replies folks and keep them coming. As far as my Deuce goes its one of those balls for me that while it always seems to do what I ask and I have had plenty of scores with it....I just really don't have a big love for it. It isn't quite strong enough in the mud that I see sometimes, and yes while it gives a little different look than my origional X-factor they seem to overlap just too much for me. Only time the Deuce is used is if the backends are too tight for the X and usually for that the Fuel comes out of the bag. I believe that I will for now go with the Cherry Bomb to replace the X-factor and shortly after get the Black Cherry to replace the Duece. I may defer this plan however for a while depending on the look that the CB gives me in relation to the Deuce. If it does Then I may opt APK's suggestion and get the XL to replace my Sonic-X as I believe that type of predictability would definatly help in the later tourny games. Again thanks guys for the insight.

According to Lane#1 the new Cranberry (or older Blueberry, black raspberry or Pink raspberry...basically all the same ball) are the most versitile ball.  The PK18 cover can be sanded, polished, or whatever you need.  This would give you the most options with one ball.  By the description of your style, I would say the newer cranberry would be a little better because of the slightly differrent core (compared to the others listed) which will give you a little more length & flip.  But regardless of your choice, you really can't go wrong with a buzzsaw.
