my 1st lane#1 experience
« on: May 05, 2005, 04:58:06 AM »
got a uranium pearl with a short pin.  the reaction is quite good.  very predictable and strong.  i'm guessing that pearl activator coverstock allow it to get down the lane, and the diamond core provides the "rolly" look on the lane.

i also love the predictable movement on the lane.  just makes it a lot easier to read the lane.

however, i have one issue with this ball.

i've heard over and over from this forum that lane#1 carries better than other companies' balls.  in MY case, this is so not true.

great ball and i like it, but kind of disappointed over it's carry.

carry is directly related to the angle at which the ball enters the pocket, along with speed, ball weight, etc.  Leaving pins on a seemingly good shot tells you that something isn't quite right.  For the most part, the heavy rolling characteristics of diamond cores give them a good entry angle, but conditions exist where this isn't true.  I have found that lots of oil (where the ball isn't able to get into a roll) causes carry issues, not only with saws, but all equipment.  On the other end of the spectrum, dry lanes, where the ball burns up lots of energy, also causes carry issues.  Assuming you are not bowling on either one of those conditions, move around a little on the lane, play some different areas to change the entry angle a little, and I think you will find your carry improves.

ahhh, it might've been due to drier conditions?  since the ball wants to roll up early, i think it's more prone to rolling out.  in order to combat that, i had to increase my speed and also give more rev at the same time (to make it back to pocket).  maybe that had something to do with the carry.

now, what's a preferred angle for the maximum carry?

edit:  forgot to say, thanks for the insight!

I seem to remember a study a while back that said an entry angle of 11º produced the highest carry percentage for a center pocket hit (anyone want to refresh my memory if it is wrong).

I've always heard 6 degrees.

Depends on the conditions.

Sometimes coming in at an extreme angle is the only way to get around carrydown, or other lane condition that would lower your carry %.

However were it to be a "perfect" condition, a 6 degree entry angle will provide you with the best carry percentage over multiple frames.
