I noticed novawagonmaster had the same issue -- what gives?
I'm going to add a little polish when I drill it up, since I'm looking for some length in the front, but did some of these things come dull on purpose, and if so, why? By adding polish, am I doing something to this ball that Lane #1 didn't intend?

The XP was factory at 1000 Grit Paste. It is a much finer 1000 than the Buzzbomb but still not shiny.
Thanks beans

Do you recommend polish to gain length or is this ball going to have length anyway?
I've seen two in person and both looked polished. Now I'm trying to figure out if the reviews I'm reading about the ball on this site and others were done with polish or without.
I really need this ball to be cleaner through the heads than my Tsunami H20. It would be nice to have it as long as my Evo but with a stronger (not more angular, just stronger) move in the back than the Evo. Basically I want the Evo's length with the H20's hook shape.

The first batch of SuperNova XP's came polished but have been a 1000 grit matte polished finish ever since.
Try the box finish with a touch of Secret Sauce on it. You can always go back to the box finish easy enough......

When mine showed up, it looked like it had been sitting in an auto body shop for a couple years. There was a ton of "compound dust" both in the box AND in the plastic bag (on the ball itself). It just looked "unfinished" to me.

I don't have any Sauce right now (need to get some and probably will next month), but I do have some Storm ReactaShine, XtraShine, MoonShine and a couple of other products here at the house. Thoughts?

Mine came polished, but I after a souple weeks, sanded it to 1000 abralon and put a coat of Track magic shine on the ball and it was a better ball for me than it was OOB. I would try it once first and then see what you thinik.
I tried it at 4000 and it was a little to strong in the mids for me, so went back to polished

I've got some Magic Shine at home right now. I might give that a shot.
I can already tell by looking at it that it's not going to work for my league (which is all I bought it for) without making the surface weaker somehow, either by higher grit or polish. If this ball is anywhere close to the Tsunami in strength -- and I've got at least two people now telling me it's stronger -- then it will never emerge from the bag on league night.
My label-drilled Evolution can handle things most of the time, but (a) doesn't read the mids well enough and (b) is often too touchy off the spot.

mine came dull..only reason i ordered it was because i wanted a polished ball and the video on lane1 site had a polished version and at the time didnt know it came dull....

Just polish it if you want it polished. I don't see what the big problem is.

To Jess, I say polish it over 2000 abralon, That will be a good ball for league is you say your Evo is a little unsure in the midlane, because this has a good read of the midlane. with nice hard arc at breakpoint. Try this, I am almost betting it will be a sure bet.
Oh and you better be ready for some pins to be flying everywhere. I base every ball i get on hitting power with this ball. It is sick!

Pink Raspberry
Enriched Uranium
Black Cherry Bomb
and carries like
carbide plus
supernova solid
XP is a Beast!

Thanks, I might do that next week. I drilled it up before I saw this post.
It's got a label drill on it right now (CG ended up about 1.5 inches under middle, if it matters...pin is directly over the ring, MB marker is on the track side of the thumb, tight to the thumbhole at about 7 o'clock). Finish is 1000 Abralon plus Track Clean & Shine (a polish). I didn't really hammer the polish in there, either...it's not really a light polish, but it's not a heavy polish job.

Jess, why did you put the CG in the negative position..? Just curious. =:^D

Because a label drilling was impossible without doing it. In order to get the pin and the MB where they were supposed to be as per the drill sheet, the CG had to go there. It was slightly left of a straight line from the pin to the MB.
I believe CG matters somewhat but it is easily the least important of the three on a MB ball, and even if/when it does matter, only when it's swung out a good ways do you start to see noticeable differences.

tgod knows is where you put the mb, not the cg...they are not always aligned

Unfortunately for me LaneHammer20 is correct about the XP, so much so that I can't use it at the moment. Beans drilled this ball up for me at Nationals with the pin over the middle finger and the MB about 1 1/2 to the right of the thumb. This ball comes off the break point like it was shot out of a cannon. I need some more time to learn how to work with it and adjust the surface. When I recieved the ball from Beans it was polished, since then I took some 4000 Ablaron to it and its not quite as flippy, but way too strong off the break point for me.

Hey Nicanor,
Try sanding to 600-800 and hit it with the Secret Sauce. That will smooth it out for you. That is my magic formula that I use on all my pearls...
Or try 2000 Abralon.

Thanks Beans. I have a quart of Beans' Secret Sauce and maybe I can use a 500 or 1000 Ablaron pad. The XP has so much energy when it hits the pocket light, it just throws pins everywhere and pocket hits are just explosive, but I have to be ahead of the ball because in a heartbeat its 9 then 4/9 through the beak.
I'm going to work with it again, but I was recently in a pretty bad motorcycle accident and though I bowl league, practice and testing is out of the question.
Thanks again,

Isn't the purpose of polish to increase length and back end? How will polishing the ball smooth it out?

The lower the grit sanding or abralon pad you use under the polish the smoother the ball reaction will be. The polish will get you length but if you use a lower grit surface under the polish the direction change down the lane will be smoother.
take a ball all the way to 4000 abralon and then polish and it will go the longest and be very sharp when it hits friction.
use 500 abralon and then polish you will get good length but have a much smoother and more controllable backend.

I know enough about cover stock preps and I stand by my question. A great majority of pearls come from the factory with a fairly dull surface (400-800 grit) and then hit with a polish and most of them go long and flip. Yes, I know the finer you sand before you polish alters the reaction.
I would think his second recommendation of 2000 abralon (or maybe 4000) would be a better choice. Fine sanding with no polish gives me a clean look through the fronts without the jerk off the dry that polish adds.

I can suggest 3M's Finesse-It II compound finish on a 4.000 grit Abralon base. Cool stuff, you get a shiny, glossy surface which is very even and very clean. Reaction-wise, from the balls I tried with it, the reaction fell between a standard high gloss polish (Brunswick) and a pure 4.000 Abralon finish: Very good length through the heads due to the shiny surface, but much better traction and control at the break point than polished. Helped me, among others, tame down my Awesome Finish... As a side effect, you will get the tackiest ball surface you can imagine. Pin carry is unholy, and it lasts very well.
