Cobalt Bomb mini-review
« on: March 03, 2006, 01:38:21 PM »
Lane 1 was good enough to send me a Cobalt early to shake down. Here's what I can tell you...

Gross weight...15# 3 oz
Top weight...3.2 oz
Pin...3.5"

I was considering a pin over fingers drill but when I heard at the extreme length on this ball I decided to do something else. Needed something to get longer than my Tsunami and still turn the corner...

Here's what I ended up with...http://www.dougsproshop.net/images/MyArsenal/CobaltBombPearl.JPG

Ending specs:
Top wt: 3/4 oz
Side wt: 1/2 oz
Finger wt: 3/8 oz

I didn't get any practice with the ball before league so I started out on our fresh 38 foot pattern (oiled to 32, buffed to 38 with very little taper to the pattern front to back) with the Solid Uranium and after slamming 2-8 pins and 2-9 pins in 4 frames I decided to put it away and try the Cobalt.

Moved my feet 8 boards right and my target 3 right and threw the Cobalt. Ball went high flush and totally annihilated the rack. I could not believe the pin action on this hit. Our pins are over a year old and are getting pretty dead. This ball threw the pins like they weighed 2# and made of superball material!

The next ball I threw 15 out to 8 (the edge of the wall)...the ball skated for 35 feet and started to pick up a roll (near the end of the pattern) sat for another 4-5 feet and then BOOM left it went, crushed the rack and struck again.

I continued to play around a little and I have to say the hype on this ball is true...much more angular than any Buzzsaw I have ever thrown. I noticed a much stronger change of direction with this ball than any ball I have thrown from Lane 1.

I pushed one too wide and it caught hold on the 3 board and wham...no roll, no arc not sit to it...instantaneous left turn.

This is going to be a big selling ball for Lane 1 as it does go long, smoothly and recover VERY well.

I had no problem carrying light hits, flush hits and high hits. I ended up shooting 676 with a missed spare in each game and 2 splits costing my my 700 series.

This ball along with the Tsunami and the Solid Uranium would make a solid 3 ball arsenal.

Need to order one? Drop me a message.

I agree Don. I very rarely have this kind of success out of the box with a ball but 676 with 3 splits and 2 opens is a very good first showing considering the ball didn't have a single frame on it when I started the night...212-232-223..best I have shot in weeks.

This ball is going to sell big.

The backend of the Cobalt is shorter and more angular.

I think the Cobalt backend will look to be greater due to the overall  nature of the ball.

I cannot say for sure though because the backend on my Enriched was strong and significantly stronger than any particle I have used in the past but nothing like the resins I have used. The layout I used was a lower flaring length drilling so it may have been deceiving.

The Cobalt does out hook the H2O, Pearl Uranium, Cherry Bomb, Emerald and Cranberry on the backend.

If I had to compare I'd say it gets the length of the Emerald with the backend of the Silver Diamond.

Does that help?
