Need recommendation to clean LANE#1 balls
« on: August 14, 2004, 10:30:00 AM »
I got a couple of Lane#1 balls.  What is the best recommendation to maintenance the balls.  How to clean?  How often should I clean the balls?  Scotch pad?  Simple green?

That is absolutely correct Jabroni...My answer would be the same. Only, get a gallon of Denatured Alcohol from Home Depot...about $8-10 and clean the balls with that after EVERY use...90% of all ball cleaners are denatured alcohol based.    Trust me!!!!!!!!!!   Beans

Trust you. :-)
Denatured Alcohol is NOT allowed. From the ABC list of approved  cleaners...

Solvents and Other Chemicals

Acceptable During Sanctioned Competition

Rubbing Alcohol (Isopropyl)
CV-88
Jolt Detergent
"Simple Green"
"Windex" window cleaner
Ammonia

Not Acceptable at Any Time

Other Alcohols (i.e. Denatured Ethyl Alcohol, etc.)
Acetone (nail polish remover)
"Armor-All"
"Cutex" non-acetone (nail polish remover)
Ethers, Esters and Ketone (MEK)
Kerosene, Gasoline, other fuels
Most commercial solvents (Xylol, lacquer thinner, mineral spirits, chloro-form, Methyl Hydrate)

You can use any cleaner or polish BEFORE or AFTER any ABC competition. The rules are in place only DURING competition.

Ths list you are quoting is where people mistakenly think you can NEVER, EVER use anything on that list. That's totally incorrect. Otherwise, you could never wet sand, polish, clean (with other types of prohibited cleaners) or otherwise alter the surface of your ball. That's why you see other "cleaners" such as "hook it" on the prohibited list because it contains de-natured alcohol.

The list has two categories:

Acceptable During Sanctioned Competition
and
Not Acceptable at Any Time

Both are meant for during sanctioned competition play only.

To answer your question, spookster. I use simple green automotive cut 50-50 with water. Works great!!

Keep looking... I'm sure there's a 300 in one of those balls you keep buying!!

And where did you get that interpretation?  Unless you have it in writing from the ABC, I take "Not acceptable at any time" to mean just that.  I'd hate to see someone ignore a rule and get tossed from a tournament because of what he read on here.
