I just got back into bowling this season after 13 years. I started off using my 16 lb Speedzone but it kept passing the headpin so I changed to my 15 lb Danger Zone. The way the lanes are set up it is better to play the inside. I like to play the second arrow. Last week I bought a 15 lb Lane #1 Agent Orange. I was told by the proshop that this would be good for the lane conditions. I new going into it that I was going to have to change the type of ball that I threw. I have thrown a couple of solid strikes with the AO but feel a little uncomfortable throwing it. I would like to be able to hit the pocket a little more consistently.
Does anyone have any suggestions since I am trying to throw more of a hook shot?

i would suggest you get a coach and get some lessons
you could get 3-4 lessons for the price of a new ball, and would help you immensely more than a new ball

Practice, practice practice, it will take time to get used to throwing that way. I am actually currently going the other way Im really working at bringing the speed up for when I need it and to play up the right side(near the gutter) is very hard for me to get the hang of, just wheel it out there and find a line you like. Also remember a few things moving inside on a THS will give you much more room then you are used to BUT when you do miss in the wrong ways you will leave a lot more splits IMO.

I know how to bowl I was just looking for some advice on changing how I throw the ball. I currently have a 150 average.

Thanks KofK
I am thinking that practice and repitition is what it is going to take.

Inverted this is exactly why people QUIT. because of DONKEES like you, he chose to buy the ball why berate him. Had it been a 2nd dimension you would have said nothing at all....... JEzzzzzzzzzzus kRist give it a damn break..........

well if you already " know " how to bowl then why did you ask your question ?
if you knew how to bowl already then finding the pocket wouldnt be a big deal
the best players in the world all have coaches, and would not be great unless they had help along the way i.e coaching and lessons
chalk up another hijacked thread from inverted 1
honestly get over yourself
oh wait better be careful you might come beat me up
and have your kids beat up my kids like you said in your other figjam threat thread

Wait...
Isn't that the claim made by lane#1??
Inverted: Please, be reasonable. You know that a certain amount of base skill is required before some of the Lane#1 magic kicks in. You struggled with this phenomena yourself.
The author is learning to bowl again after 13 years away. Give him a break.
After some lessons and experience getting back in the game, he should be able to raise his average by 10 pins because it carries pins 20% better than with any other ball on the market. We've discussed this many times.
Hope this helps.

Can you give us a little more information about what's going on when you're struggling? Is the ball hitting flat, or over-reacting, or just not carrying when it gets to the pocket?
Your answers will determine your needed adjustments, whether it's where you stand, what your target is or if you need to alter the surface of the ball.

I don't know..I never did find the magic or mojo with Lane#1 balls and I'm pretty sure I know how to bowl.
So now it takes a certain skill level to achieve the magic? Whoa..I'm screwed
Inverted: No offense intended. I just remember you confessing some shortcomings to Beans in a thread many moons ago. If I'm mistaken, I apologize.

Kdimera,
Since you're getting back into bowling after such a long break, I'd also suggest lessons. Also, with such a long layoff, I'm hoping the driller re-measured your PAP before drilling your Agent Orange. Such a strong ball not drilled to your measurements might not be working correctly.
If you're anywhere near Las Vegas, I'd suggest Mike Jasnau at the Gold Coast. I was in Vegas recently for Nationals and took a lesson from him while there. Well worth the time and money you'd invest.

It seems even if I hit the same mark on the boards I get very different results. I am sure it is the way I am throwing it. I am trying to get it to go from the middle out to the left and back in. I need to adjust to doing this because my danger zone I threw it down the second arrow and it hooked into the pocket.

try coaching

you tube has some great information out there, but like in any thread in the Lane #1 forum you have to wade through the BS to get to it.
This is not meant to be a replacement for a live coach but can help with some small things.

I apologize I thought you were blowing off my question when you told me to get lessons. I just didn't want you to think that I didn't know how to bowl. My cousin actually is the one who taught me. She was a decent bowler had like a 185 average.

no problem
i still feel it is the best advise out there for you
coaches are really good at what they do, and can help you make tremendous improvements in a short time.
if you try to learn on your own, and get it wrong then you have to combat muscle memory problems, and its no fun trying to undo muscle memory

Anyone know where to get lessons in Northern New Jersey?

usbc has a coaching link on their site, and will list coaches in your area, but word of mouth references are always better imo
good luck dear

Also just want to throw out there that I got the new ball because my other balls were from when I originally bowled 13 years ago. Back then I bowled on wood lanes. now I bowl on synthetic so I just figured it was time for a new ball. I am not one to just run out and replace my ball all the time.

Larry I live in Caldwell. About 25 minutes from you (3 hours with Jersey traffic). I bowl in Bellville at Brunswick zone.

It seems even if I hit the same mark on the boards I get very different results. I am sure it is the way I am throwing it. I am trying to get it to go from the middle out to the left and back in. I need to adjust to doing this because my danger zone I threw it down the second arrow and it hooked into the pocket.
Thanks for the response. Here are some things to think about:
1) An Agent Orange (or most any company's aggressive balls, including Brunswick's) is going to be a lot stronger than the equipment you are accustomed to throwing. The difference in technology from a current-day ball back to a Danger Zone or Speed Zone is fairly significant. These balls have "more to give," for lack of a better term, than your old stuff does. Therefore, if you try to go straight down second arrow with an Agent Orange, you will probably experience some difficulty because the ball may be too strong to play that line.
2) On the flip side, this ball should allow you more error room if you miss your mark wide. You should be able to move in and open up the lane a little more.
3) If you feel this ball is too touchy right now, surface changes can help. The Agent Orange comes at 500 grit. You can have your pro shop change that to 1000 or 2000 grit, or even 4000 grit. They can add polish or take polish off. A simple spin on a ball wheel to move the surface from 500 to 1000 is a pretty cheap adjustment (anywhere from $5 to $20 in most places, and some shops will do it for free if you bought the ball there). My wife currently throws a Roto Grip Silver Streak and we have to be careful to keep the surface on that ball in a certain condition or she will have problems with it.
4) Lessons are a good suggestion. But for someone coming back to the game after a long layoff, repetition is no less important, and perhaps even more so. Lots of practice will be needed for you just to get accustomed to the change in lane oiling procedures now versus when you last bowled.
5) If, after trying all of the above and finding that you're still having trouble, you might need to go another direction equipment-wise, including to another company. If you have low ball speed and usually bowl on dry lanes, for instance, an Agent Orange will be too much ball for you. You may find out that you just don't match up with Lane #1 gear -- I didn't for a long time. But I've found most people tend to match up with a wide range of equipment from all companies and it's mostly about (a) the way you throw it and (b) the way you have the ball drilled and surface-prepped.
Keep us updated!

Kdimera, I know exactly how you feel I'm coming back after a 13-year break too. I also threw a Danger Zone back then. Since returning, I've used Storm and Lane #1 equipment. In the 1980s and early 90s, I bowled on wood, and moved to synthetic before taking a break.
Today, I'm bowling on both. Here's my advice:
1. Without seeing you throw the ball, I'd bet you're getting around the ball too much. This was/is my first problem. I believe I developed this in response to the wooden lanes, and longer oil in the house where I learned to bowl.
2. It seems like today's lanes are oiled to compete with the equipment, rather than challenge the bowler. Most of the balls I've seen in the past few months since coming back are drilled to hook, and hook, and hook. Staying behind the ball works well with these drills, as they flare up to 7 inches using just the core design. Some balls/cores don't like negative or thumb weight. The core of the AO is one of these.
3. You'll find less harassment on other forums. www.bowlingballexchange.com and lane1bowling.com/forums are Lane #1 equipment friendly.
4. Regardless of the hype or advertising, I've found the diamond cores of Lane #1 equipment do actually hit harder for me. You can call Lane #1 and discuss the ball reaction you're getting and they will help you.
5. If possible, post a video of your shot and ask for help. I've found the BBE forum to be less critical than this one, and generally more helpful.
6. Give it some time, it took me several games to get my timing back, in order to create more leverage at the point of release. This helped be to throw the ball straighter, and for my SuperNova XP to hit harder.
Good luck

I know someone who gets lessons on Sunday afternoons at Circle Lanes in Ledgewood. How far is that from Caldwell?
Currently I forgot the coaches name but I can find out.

Ledgewood is about 45 minutes.
Larry if you want to meet up we can. I bowl in league in Bellvile. I also bowl for fun there or Eagle Rock in West Orange or Hanover Lanes in East Hanover.
Let me know.
