Pro Purple Drilling
« on: July 17, 2003, 08:11:57 AM »
Just picked up a Pro Purple from DrillWizard (THANKS!!!!) and now that i have it all plugged up I am looking for a drill pattern. I have Lane 1's sheet but I am wondering if you guys have any suggestions. Her eis what I have in my bag at the moment....

XXXL drilled 4x4
Emerald drilled 4x4 pin next to ring
Cherry Bomb drilled 3-1/2 x 4-1/2
Blueberry drilled 4x3 pin next to ring
Super Bomb drilled pin under ring 4x4
Inferno drilled 5-1/2 x 4 pin over bridge

Where can I fit the Pro Purple? I was thinking perhaps a pin over ring with cg right a bit but am not sure.

Suggestions????

Doug,

I have had a Pro Purple for a long time. While it is not of major use for me, since I prefer balls specific to an oil condition, it is probably the most versatile ball in my assortment. Mine is drilled approx 4.5 x 5, with a 2" pin-to-Cg distance. It covers for me, if necessary, what your Chery Bomb, Blue berry and Inferno *probably* (by my best guess) covers for you. For me, it is a medium to medium heavy oil ball, with the stock coverstock finish. If I am lost, and the oil is more than medium-light, I can always find a way to the pocket with it. Its hitting power is not tremendous, but more than average.

For your purposes, I am not sure exactly where you can best use it. By dint of your specs (speed and rev rate), I'd guess it would fit somewhere above the Cherry bomb and in the range of the Blueberry with less length and less backend (but still plenty of hit). If your rev rate is average for all bowlers, I'd put the pin in the 3.5 - 4" pin to PAP range (remember this ball has very little flare; its cover is its strength.) and CG in the 4" range. Stacked is fine with this ball as it's almost impossible to make it flippy. I'd guess this would be the most versatile for you: 4x4, 4x3.5, 3.5x4, in that neighborhood.

RG min to max: 2.53 - 2.56 (medium low to medium)
RG Diff: .028 (3-4" flare)

Oh, the cover is probably Brunswick's DTX-1 or 2 and is definitely version 2.0.
This cover lasts freaking forever, absorbs almost no oil; you can't beat it with a stick.

I have used it with slightly slower speeds on true heavy oil and have been amazed. It is meant for mediums.

Good luck and thanks for all the fish.

Thanks Ct...the prior owner had the ball drilled somewhat similar to Ebonite's Rev Leverage with the pin on the midline and cg near the thumb.

That thing must have hooked at their feet!!!!!

I was thinking some variation of a 4x4 ish layout as that pattern seems to work very well for me.

Thanks !!!

I would go with a 1:30 pin label drilling. Like Charlest said, it should fit bewteen your Cherry bomb and Blueberry. Placing the pin out closer towards your PAP, will enhance the movement on the backend, because this ball does not flip. =:^D

Thanks TG....a drilling similar to my Emerald was suggested by another user.

Would a 4x4 or like 4 x 4-1/2 work out?

I am not crazy about label leverage. I have it on my Cherry Bomb and unless I have dry to bump it off of it hits weak. Also had the same prob with a Green/Black Monster I drilled a few years back and a DAnger ZOne.

Would the stronger cover on the purple cure this?

Doug, this is one freaking even reacting ball. I would not suggest a label drilling at all, based on your specs. Please try a 4x4; if the pin is long enough, you could even put the pin over the ring finger, but still stack the CG below it. Pin next to the ring finger should still be just fine. Few high revvers can make this ball flip. 4x4 will just make this ball nice reacting. If I had it to do over again, I would get a 3" pin, not the 2" pin I have and would defintiely do 4x4, not the 4x5 I have now.

I took ct's advice and drilled it close to a 4x4. It is actually 3-7/8 x 3-3/4. I had to do this since I am not real fond of drilling so close to the pin.

And he was 100% correct in the prediction of the ball's reaction....arc city.

Despite the fact that the lanes had not been oiled all week, they had seen light use so wasn't too bad, but the carrydown etc had made my Emerald and Cherry Bomb of no use. I pulled out this bad boy and played the same line I was playing with the cherry.

Well I always put a stick on dot on my PAP when I am testing out a new ball and when I threw the purple, the dot moved very little but never broke up like I am used to seeing. What I did see though was a heavy strong move at about 35 feet that carried the ball deep into the 1-2 pocket....recall, I ama RH and the Cherry was hitting the light mixer on this line :-)

So thank you to ct for the layout and drillwizard for getting me the ball. I am thinking it'll have a home in my bag for quite awhile!!!

Thanks again !!!!

Doug,

I'm glad to seems to have worked for you. But give it some more trials before you put your final blessing on it.

Oh, I do have some other good news for you about this ball. I am fairly sure this was Brunswick's DTX-2 cover; I know Lane#1 said it had the Cerium Oxide finish. This makes it VERY like the Brunswick Riot Zone (except the RZ had huge flare and backend). What this translates to is very little absorption of oil and an extremely durable cover ... EXTREMELY. As a reference here is the data sheet for the RZ:

Well ct,

This one already reacts a lot better than either of the other 2 I had tried so that's why I am saying what I am.

thanks for the info...I had thought that the cover was very Riot-esque when I saw them before.

Thanks again....
