Flexor Tendon
« on: February 02, 2004, 10:19:54 AM »

During bowling tonight I strained my Flexor tendon, I am curious to see if
anyone else has had this happen and how long did it take to heal and the
remedies it took to heal it. I understand there isnt much I can do for it..
But I am open for anything..

may i oofer some advice

dont mess with it

mine has had a problem on and off for 10 years

15 cortizone shots later-surgery is the only option left.

i have rest(every summer) and rehab, but dr said it not going to help.

so it should be rest until no pain-probably 1-3 weeks

fiber cut - Give it rest at least 3-4 weeks.  Lots of ice to reduce the inflammation.  I would suggest ice massage. Take an ice cube and rub the affected area for about 2-3 minutes.  Do this once an hour for every hour you possible can.

Once the major pain goes away and you feel that you can begin to lift again.  Begin a strengthening and conditioning program with free weights and exercise tubing.

I would also have your span checked to make sure you are not putting undue stress on your muscles.  You may also need to wear a brace.

I agree with everything doc just said. Also - check out Physical therapy and/or acupuncture as well.

ICE is really important. As much as you can stand.

Ok I was able to get into the doc. After him examining the arm and hand he said I stretched the 2 tendons (2 that attach to the ring finger and middle finger).. He said the option was Qortizone shots, Celebrex and some minor therapy.. After some celebrex and therapy I got to say the arm feels
95% better, Depending on the next visit will determine if I get Qortizone.. But I dont think I will need it

fiber cut - You may want to have your span checked and get refitted.  Often times these problems will manifest again if the span isn't correct.  Now that the tendons are feeling better ease back into it.  And keep building the strength.

Fiber Cut - be very, very, very, very, very careful with cortisone shots to the tendons.

I had thought that was my answer, but the second doc I went to said NO - that the steroids can make the tendons BRITTLE and that they can then snap. He said that the risk of that happening was far too great to try it.

I'm still in PT - now to strengthen the wrist, elbow and shoulder. The pain is with me all the time - sometimes better, sometimes worse.

Good luck.

Definitely have your span checked - I did so recently and it is so nice to bowl pain-free again.  Above all, take care of yourself.
